2024-25 Coaching Carousel

This year did appear to be quite strong though.

There will certainly be good candidates in a year, though not sure there will be nearly as many with proven success.
Here’s some of the coaches I’m watching if Red doesn’t make the tournament.

I want a coach who’s won before.

Matt Langel, finished first 6 of last 7 years
Bucky McMillan, first 2 of last 3 yrs
Bryce Drew, first 3 of last 5 yrs
Mitch Henderson, first 3 of last 4 yrs
John Becker, first 8 of last 9 yrs

I’ve been a Becker fan. Not sure how he doesn’t get any opportunities. What a great defensive minded coach. Would be ecstatic to land him.

little pitino to Xavier
Reported that little Pitino had a handshake agreement with Villanova then backed out when Xavier offered more $$. Wow. Didn't say what the difference in money/years was but to me Nova is the better job. You can win a natty at Nova, already proven. Recruiting ground etc.

If I am a coach comparing potential programs, success in the pre-NIL era is not as important as the school's and the NIL collective's commitment to paying players going forward. I have no idea if this is why Pitino chose Xavier over Villanova, just that it should be a huge consideration.

Supposedly Kevin Willard skipped the Maryland team dinner last night, the night before they play Florida in the Sweet 16, because he accepted the Villanova job.
I firmly believe Kevin Willard is the worst person (non-criminal division), not just in college hoops, but in all of sports. And that is inclusive of D.Hurley. That guy is just diabolically misguided, selfish and nacassistic. And what is funny is he is a terrible basketball coach too. I believe this is his first S16 after almost 20 years of coaching. The funny part is I was always an admirer of his father, Ralph, who was a helluva coach (and a former SU assistant to boot).

Maryland's athletic dept. has been in disarray for many years. Their AD is leaving for SMU. They went to the B1G because they were so much in debt. Apparently that hasn't changed it. It sounds like he thinks he'll get more compensation money for players at Nova.
Which is really surprising considering the Under Armour relationship, unless that is in terrible shape.

Kevin Willard has a horrible personal reputation in coaching circles. I’m surprised Jay Wright would allow him anywhere near Nova.

Villanova had Richard Pitino, but Xavier offered him more money. To be honest, Villanova should be able to do better than Pitino or Willard.

Or should they?

This board has overrated the coaching prospects of us and our peer schools for a decade. There’s no magic coach out there. Those guys are already set in their jobs. Most of them in the SEC. UConn made a great hire in Hurley, but he was no sure thing out of RI. In fact until he won the natty the first time the jury was out on him still.

I think so, or at least they could get one of the stud mid-major coaches instead of a retread middling P5 coach. It's why I was never enamored of hiring Buzz Williams. We know what he is at the P5 level, good enough but he's hit his ceiling, IMO. Same with Willard.

It's ironic you say this. I've had personal relationships with Willard and feel the same way. Willard is part of the Pitino coaching tree, but realistically has only picked up his negative traits. The guy is a real DB. And that's the good news.

The bad news is if we claim Pitino as part of the Boeheim coaching tree, then I guess Willard is a twig off of it.

What's your thoughts on Shaka Smart. Buzz is like five years older and has a pretty good tournament record, although Shaka did get to the FF in his first trip.

I would take either one as the replacement to JAB's replacement.

I guess one, technically, and conveniently, can claim it. However, the fact is, JB was a total greenhorn himself as a HC when he hired Rick. Therefore, JB was still learning the ropes himself, etc. relative to development, what type of style, system, etc. coach he was to be. By the time JB did, Rick was long gone, as he was only at SU for two short seasons.

Moreover, I've never hear Rick himself ever suggest, etc. that JB had any significant type impact relative to his coaching style, technique, etc., but rather names other individuals whom did have major influence and impact.

Of course we all know and have heard the hiring of Rick on his honeymoon ad nauseam. However, how it all played out, etc. says more about Rick then it does about JB hiring a greenhorn assistant.
