2024-25 Coaching Carousel

This is Coyle.

Remember the details of his leaving for Minnesota? He was scheduled to attend a meeting of ACC ADs (probably in North Carolina). They call the meeting to order and there's an empty chair. "Where's the Syracuse AD?" He was in Minneapolis, being introduced as the new Minnesota AD.

He never advised his fellow ADs nor his compatriots at SU.

It was either Atlanta, or Amelia Island outside of Jacksonville.

I don’t really see the issue. Teams are already being led by their new coaches: Miami, FSU, Utah, etc… and out there recruiting.

If he didn’t do it now, he’d have to wait until Sunday night or Monday morning.

Unless he fired him by phone/text/zoom, in which case it would be made into a bigger deal.
Exactly. The way Coyle left SU was pretty classless but I don't think he did anything wrong here. Transfer portal and recruiting starts soon and there's no time to waste. Coaches have been fired in the locker room after a game and on the tarmac. This was fine.

I think Indiana might win a bidding war.
Indiana might lose out to Iowa if McCaffrey retires as most of the Iowa fans hope he does.

Drake coach McCollum is an Iowa native.

Chris Collins is a possible coach at Indiana if he wants to move on from Northwestern to a school with more NIL.

Completely agree. "Ruthless" would have been sending the 2:09 AM social media message without telling the coach in person.

Well, knocking on a guy's door at 2 AM to give him a pink slip is pretty harsh. Could have waited until the next morning.

Meh, with what these guys are making, "ruthless" isn't actually a thing.

They'll be fine.

Wade is gonna kill it in Raleigh. I could see them being more relevant that UNC over the next decade.
These next five years are critical for ACC schools to position themselves for a big 2 invite. NC State is likely to the SEC. Schools are putting their chips to the center of the table now. For Syracuse to have any chance at the Big Ten they need both basketball and football to be at their high point or else we’ll be stuck with the big 12 merger, or at worst, Big East basketball like UConn

Big Ten is not happening. We do not even get 40,000 at football games anymore. Last year, Rutgers averaged 48k. And THAT is 1/2 what PSU, OSU, and Michigan draw.

By comparison, Clemson leads the ACC in attendance by far.. and they would be 5th in the B1G and 10th in the SEC. FSU's 5-year average would put them at #8 for attendance in the B1G. Only Maryland and NW have averaged less than Syracuse over 5 years.

Unless we quickly turn into Oregon, we are not getting an invite.

Depending upon what "Big-Time" ends up being, that might not be a bad thing.

Ex-Minnesota coach Ben Johnson is very similar to Red. He is a lomg-time assistant coach with his first-time ever being a head coach job at a Power 5 school. Johnson got fired after 4 years. Was 19-15 last season & 15-17 this year. Lack of NIL took away most of his returning team this year.

Johnson originally got a 5 year contract at $1.95 million per year. Lowest paid coach in B1G. MN added a year to his contract after his 1st season (13-17) for some reason & his buyout was changed to 100% so Johnson will get $3.9 million now. However, his contract says to collect the buyout he must seek comparable employment in a timely fashion. If Johnson finds a similar job (Power 5 head coach or any college head job?) then MN will cease his buyout payment.

I wonder if Syracuse has similar contract language for Red?

I wonder if Quadir (I don’t go to class) Copeland goes with him.
