Didn’t the defender hit with his face mask and forehead. It was a form tackle otherwise. I didn’t see the defender lead with the top of the helmet.

Agreed, but a field goal was by no means a given for them even with the penalty. I think the football gods balanced that out with the doink by Carrot Top.

They are going to be thinking more about that 4th and 13 TD.

That was one of the best post-season games, (that mattered) than I've seen. After a series of games where one team took control early and just dominated, (except for Clemson's mini-comeback vs. Texas), we had the underdog come back all the way to take the lead in OT with some heroic performances. Then the favorite rose up to take it in the end. I was rooting for State but I also glad Auburn, (why doesn't he play for Auburn?) didn't get the blame for a defeat. Great games should be decided by great plays and this one was. Skattebo was an utter heroic figure in defeat. The game was a tribute to college football and this is why we love it.

FWIW, Matt Austin the rules expert watched it in slow-mo and said he thought it was targeting.

If that wasn't targeting they should forget about the rule. The rule exists to protect defenseless players.
ASU outplayed Texas and the refs screwed them. They don't stand a chance against the Rose Bowl winner.
