Technically for targeting you need to target the head or neck area. So by rule most of these calls should not be targeting given that the defender was not targeting the head or neck and the contact was incidental. The rule has been abused.

We should be upset that the refs have not been following the rule as written. Incidental contact isn't supposed to be called. It needs to be contact outside of a normal tackle.

So what exactly did the Texas player do outside of a normal play?

Remove the pads and helmets. Modify the rule to include any contact with the opponent's head is targeting. Deal with the incidental contacts and move on. Or is this too much full circle for CFB?

I totally get your rationale and I think this is what the actual rule is designed for and how it's worded.

My issue is that they're inconsistent in how they apply it. I've seen this same type of hit called targeting too. They need to make it crystal clear to folks what is / isn't and enforce it consistently.

Reading the rule I think it is pretty clear. Just like the rule for what is and isn't a catch is pretty clear. The problem with both is the humans making the interpretation. Nothing you can do to remove that aspect.

How do you hit the punter (same guy) on back-to-back plays? You think if you hit him the first time you'd make sure you don't do it the very next play. He got bailed out by the refs too because the first one was definitely of the 15 yard variety and not 5.

UGA is the best team this year. Losing their QB stinks for them. tOSU is the 2nd best team this year. I think Penn State and Texas are lucky to have gotten this far. Not sure about ND. They have looked great but have also not played anyone.
