Men's Soccer 2024 Recruiting / Signing Day

Highly motivated Division 1 student-athlete from France, recently graduated from Syracuse University, NY, USA, seeking to launch my professional career in the sports or sales industry in the US.
He is 24 now. Was fun to watch here. I wish him luck in his future endevours.

Aiden Arber is also not listed. He was another one of my favorites. Oyegunle also is not on the roster any longer. He would be a big loss. Also no Pagano brothers, no Rauch and no Leibold.

Lots of turnover.

He was drafted in the 2nd round by Chicago.
Surprised by that. I thought he had a disappointing season.

Good luck to him though!

SU has updated the soccer roster to include the 10 players that joined the team for the spring semester.

I wanted to see what the roster will look like in September, so I tried to build it. This is what I came up with:

Kelvin da Costa Fr NYC. NY*
Sachiel Ming Fr Southampton, Bermuda*
Alex Wharton Smyrna, GA
Quinn Olcutt Fr Fayetteville, NY
Jack Grossman Fr M Walnut Creek, CA
Dominic Bell Fr D Orlando, FL
Kristjian Fortier Fr D Toronto, ON
Garrett Holman Fr D Hamburg, NJ*
Chimere Omeze Fr D, Brampton, ON
Sam Sery Fr D Gastonia, NC
Kyle Jansen Fr G Marietta, GA
Sam Coss Jr G Bowie, MD
Jason Smith Sr G Fresno, CA
Andre Cutler-DeJesus Sr D Mararoneck, NY
Sam Layton Sr M Brisbane, Australia
Ezra Widman So M NYC, NY
Nathan Scott So M San Jose, CA
Elton Chifamba Sr M Blacklick, OH
Nicholas Kaloukian Jr Wayne, NJ
Ernest Bawa Sr M/ Portor, Ghana
Carlos Zambrano Jr M Miami,FL
Gavin Wigg Gr D Columbus, OH
Ben Rosenblatt Gr D/M Huntington Woods, MI
Micah Gradus Sr M Bel Air, MD
Michael Acquah So Awutu Bereku, Ghana
Daniel Burko Jr Lovenstad, Norway
Trevor Carabin Jr M Stouffville, ON
Aboykye Bikyeombe So M Herriman, UT
Gabe Threadgold Sr M Bremerton, WA
Tomas Hut Sr G Nutley, NJ
Jaheim Wickham Jr G Brampton, ON

The three players with asterisks next to their names were 2024 HS AAs.

I believe we are bringing in 11 true frosh and 10 transfers all told. A ton of turnover.

I think we bring back 3 starters: Kaloukian, Wigg and Wickham. If we could win most of our OOC games and finish .500 in the ACC, that would IMHO be an excellent year for this group. It will probably not be ready until next season to comptee seriously in the ACC.

.500 in the ACC might be very tough for a group this young and inexperienced. The league, already what the SEC thinks it is in football, is getting even tougher with Stanford and SMU.

Agreed. I wasn't thrilled with the massive reliance on incoming transfers to address personnel losses after last season.

I like the more balanced approach Coach Mac is taking this year. Getting 3 HS AAs in the class is something we need to ensure long term stability.

I would be okay playing the really talented kids with some returning veterans and incoming transfer vets and making 2024 a build year, with the hopes of competing again for an ACC title in 2025.

Cat, know anything about this lad?
It looks like he is from NYC. Played for the NYCFC Academy instead of going to college. Then went to Germany where he played for a couple of teams. Then came back and eventually hooked up with the New England Rev Academy.

I think he wanted to bypass college and be a pro but it looks like he was not ready for pro ball. Saw some tape on him. He is fast and can finish.

It appears he mostly plays right midfield but he can play forward as well.

It looks like Ezra Widham is in the New England roster now and might have tipped off Coach Ian about Smith.

In any event, Smith is only 19 and appears to be very talented. My guess is that he will get some playing time early and if he does well, he has a good chance to end up starting.

Bless you

All I know for sure is that they have a scrimmage on August 10th.

Would guess this means they were practicing beforehand at least a week.

I know it's usually a short turnaround time before the first exhibition; like a week last year if I recall.

i know the guys have been playing together for a while now. Anyone hear anything on the players that are standing out? The 3 HS All Americans? Some of the transfers? Some of the returnees?

Anyone have anything to share? I am playing in the soccer golf tournament on Saturday so I hopefully will get some decent intel there. Will post what I can afterwards.

Do we have any updates from yesterday?
I went to the tournament. It was my first. Had a great time.

I think all the players were there. Four of them actually played in the tournament. Coach Ian says he needs to do a better job recruiting players who golf.

It was a beautiful day. Coach had players deployed all over the course interacting with people playing in the tournament. He came up with a number of ways to force the players to talk to us and be outgoing.

Think that was a good move. We got to know a bunch of the players pretty well and the players, some of whom were clearly somewhat uncomfortable talking with strangers, had a chance to work on dealing with drunk older people.

At the dinner, Ian had all the players introduce themselves and answer a question. The question usually was why did they choose Syracuse and the answer was pretty much always the staff/locker room. The players appear to be very tight and coach says the strength of the team is the locker room.

In terms of public speaking, they all did well, even the true frosh, but the guys who were most comfortable were

Josh Smith (keeper)
Andre Cutler-DeJesus (defense)
Sam Layton (midfielder)
Carlos Zambrano (midfielder)
Gavin Wigg (defense)
Ben Rosenblatt (D/M; very articulate)
Daniel Burko (forward)
Sam Sery (frosh /M)
Dominic Bell (frosh forward
Sachiel Ming (frosh forward, HS AA; scored goal in WC qualifier for Bermuda recently)

Bell said he blew out his ACL 9 month ago and he is just now getting back to playing.

I don’t think incoming HS AA Kelvin de Costa and Garrett Holman, was there. But I might have missed him. It was hot and I was very dehydrated.

I asked a couple players about who might start and who was really looking good in practice and they would not talk about it. They did a good job keeping things on the down low.

Sorry not a lot of specifics.
