2024 Spring Practice

This is the key to the whole team.
I'm feeling pretty good about how everything else looks.
If we have a legitimately good offensive line, this could be a great team.
Agree. The concern right now is clearly Oline. The Oline was not strong last year and right now when asked about the starting 5 it was Witherspoon and 4 returns. I do think things will change by the first game but as usual success will depend a lot on the Oline.

Loved Dale Williams recent commentary on the high competition across the OL candidates, "I think the bench is a great motivator."

I think in the end it will be LT little spoon, Lg hornsby, c Reed, RG Miller, and RT Cruz.

No matter who the oline is. Can we get to a place where we can run on 3rd and 2, and can we block enough to keep the QB from running for his life when we throw.

One thing that will help is the QB throwing on time more often and not waiting for the WR to be open and then the throwing being late.

When we get to 3rd and 2 we might do almost anything with Fran.

I think that's one thing we should expect from McCord; throwing it on time.

Noticed a couple of times in the spring game, Zeed was given such a big cushion, he just ran a quick out and picked up a first down. His speed causes a big dilemma for the defense.
We have weapons to compete with ANYONE in the ACC. I can't wait for the season to start. Check that, I can wait. I want to enjoy the summer with my daughters before they go back to college. But, it is going to be a special season and the first building block to the next golden age of Syracuse Football.

I assume Fran and Nixon understand that McCord needs to be protected at all costs. I think we see a lot of running and quick passing, with some play action deep balls mixed in. Mostly get the ball in the playmakers hands quickly and keep McCord upright.

If we keep him on his feet, we will rip defenses apart.

The key for this to work, is to very quickly establish his speed by going over the top against Ohio early and often…

if we can get where 3rd and 1-3 is pretty routine make that opens up so much offense. struggles in 3rd and short, stress out the play calling. being good at it allows more aggressive calls in those spots
We couldnt throw at all so having a bad year on 3 rd isnt difficult to stop in my opinion. VT figured it out quick. send the house. BUT do that this year and we have 5 places the ball can go and quickly.

less 3rd and longs less pressure on the QB.
And I doubt we'll see many RPO's - invitation for a LB or FS to take an unnecessary shot on KM when we have other options.

Can we not run RPO's without putting the QB in harm's way? He can put it in a RB's belly and then choose to give it or pull and throw. It doesn't have to be a QB option, does it?

That's play action, which is something different. I don't want the guy running unless it's a scramble. He's too valuable. We have tons of other guys to run it or catch it.

No. Play action is when it's a pass play the whole way. Run/pass option, he has the option to give it depending on a post snap read. The QB doesn't have to run it.

Play action is a fake run, yes, that turns into a pass. Or he can just hand it off. Either way, he's not running. Why?
Play action passes look like run plays but there is no intention to hand off. With an RPO, if the defense crashes down to stop the run, you can hit a quick pass to a guy in space. If the defense backs off, you give to the RB who should then have room to get an easy 4+ yards before the defense reacts. The QB is at no more risk than a traditional play action pass. In fact, maybe it's less because he's not turning his back to the defense to sell the fake and is instead reading the defense. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I understand it.

I think sometimes people are thinking of RPO's as read options.
