2025 Preseason Camp Thread

I'm curious to know how we are handling the DE positions and what the depth chart will look like. With Jobity near 300 lbs and now moving inside we are very thin there. Even Jaylen Pray is listed at 290 lbs. Really seems like we should have brought in another DE from the portal. Staying healthy with that group could be very significant. I assume Jacquez, David O and Reese will get the most run by far.

I would guess Lesaine will be dropping down on the line as he is listed at 6'-4" and 250 lbs.
Could maybe Caden Brown? He is just 6'-4" and 225 though. But I think it was stated he was actually getting snaps at the STAR so moving the other way.
Are we going to play big some of the time and Jobity also gets snaps at DE or a guy like Hastings plays some DE at 310? or Perry or EFC as both of them are at 295?
Or maybe if a starter gets injured, its more likely McDonald gets moved down to DE at some point in the season?
Anybody hear about how Nyandoro is looking? Seems hard to count on a freshman contributing much at DE.

DE
Denis Jacquez Jr.
Jahide Lesaine Jr.
Jaylen Pray

DE
David Omapariola Or
David Reese
Nathan Nyandoro
Heavy fronts on 1st and 2nd with pass rushing specialists on 3rd and obvious passing seems like where this is headed.

I would think thats a possibility but with the staff talking about Jobity adding weight to now "move inside" that doesn't seem to add up to me. Sounds like him and Tank are the DT starters.

I know i'm responding to my own post but also wanted to add that moving Simmons to TE is also peculiar to me considering the depth at DE.

Caden brown is practicing for the star position.

Valid concern. Reese and Jacquez are the likely starters, with Omapariola also being the third experienced player. Everybody else is a question mark at DE.

Whereas we are loaded with depth / talent at DT, we are think at DE.

Now, that doesn't mean that a young player or two might not emerge behind that aforementioned trio, but right now it is nothing but question marks behind them. And given our coaching staff's propensity to rotate a ton of d-linemen, we need a couple of guys to emerge.

I have also brought up concern at DE. I think it might be the weakest link on the whole defense. Pass rush was AWFUL last season. Hard to see it improving this year

I think one of the freshmen almost are going to be forced to step up. They don’t have enough bodies. Moving Simmons off DE to TE is a very, very curious decision

Let me find my reading glasses... but another crack at the 2ish deep!

He is one of the slowest LBs I have seen at SU. He is probably better off in a 4 man unit. We play only two.
He had to still be recovering from his knee injury, he looked terrible in space last season. Then again, he was mostly in the Stefon Thompson pass rush role in the 3-3-5.

Before last season I thought he was solid. I think he’s now fully healthy and has more confidence in planting his foot to cut. Otherwise, Fran said he’s a great communicator and he has great size for the position. We need someone like him calling the defense to step up bigly. We are also thin at LB, which is by far the easiest position to recruit for. I think we’ll know very early if last year he was playing at 75% or if he lost speed/quickness due to the injury.

I had high hopes for him going into last season. Hopefully he makes a big leap this year.

I think our talent on D is scary and not in a good way.

And yet no one has been able to supplant McDonald in years. Coaches must like something.
He didn’t start the last 6 games last year. He wasn’t the starter going into the season the year before.

Edit
Those last 6 games he had a combined 2 solo tackles and 6 overall. For the year he was 8th on the team in solo tackles.

What knee injury? He appeared in every single game in 2023 and 2024. Not sure that there's any improvement coming in that regard

What makes you think that talent on defense is scary in a bad way?

Pray really impressed me at the Spring game. He could be an under the radar surprise.

Sometimes I get the feeling that if we don't have a Freeny at DE, people think we can't rush the passer. I actually really like the talent across our entire dline. I think Rooks and Jobity adding weight is good news. I think that we should think our DC has the ability to scheme pressure and sacks. I think our LBs have potential, especially with our portal addition. Certainly we gotta see how everything translates on the field. Against Tennessee we are going to be playing against some big oline. If we can be stout on the run...I think we can scheme sacks and pressure and I think there's always a few surprise players who meet the moment. We have not played a game yet. Let's see how the team does?
