2025 Preseason Camp Thread

I’m confused by the Fran has gone full Dino with camp reporting. If you meant it by this summer is different than last, yes it was. We have more spring window portal players competing for starting jobs including at QB. I wonder if he opens up even more to the media today, now that the main question mark has been settled for now and the rest of the pieces will fall into place the way they should since the QB starter has been named. Also, it seems like the comment around we are only getting reports from people who attended practice. Would those same people even be allowed into practice?
There is nothing full Dino about anything with this program :)

Local coverage obviously is beneficial in many ways. But it could be Pete gives Fran other valuable information that he otherwise wouldn't get so that is his way of helping him out in return.
No disrespect to the people on the beat, but what does Syracuse get out of giving it to the same guys who show up and ask 'who's developing into a leader' every other day.

Giving it to Pete gets it on ESPN.com. Giving it to Syracuse.com gets it put behind a paywall with a cryptic headline that you need to be a subscriber to see.

Unless Pete is part of a big misdirection from Fran…..
Or, maybe that's what we want them to think...

We can use all the national media we can get. Recruiting. Interest in the program. Eyeballs on our games. Likely we'll get many ND fans looking in on it. Higher ratings --> more ACC share payout.

you're proving your naivety and don't seem to understand what the defense was trying to do up front all last year. You do not expect a pass rush and sacks with 3-4 lineman when you're dropping 7-8 guys. The DL has to stay in their lane and contain. They are not bringing a full bull rush to the QB most plays because then there's no contain. Yes they want to beat their man but they have to be smart.

The # of people that have no idea how the trenches work is so frustrating. All people want to look at is sacks or or QB hurries as a measure of pass rush. Rarely do D Lineman ever get credit for this because they hold their man down and stay in their lane while the LB's and Secondary bring blitzes and make plays. That's by design it's not because the DL was just not good at pass rushing.
There's truth to this, but you also hear all the time how good defenses get pressure from their lineman and don't have to blitz as much. It's beneficial to get pressure without having to leave DBs on an island. In 2001 we were near the top of the country in INTs because Freeney made the defense so disruptive witout blitzes.

Here's a question maybe you know better than me. Is the 4-2-5 inherently a blitz heavy scheme like the 3-3-5 was designed to be or are we expecting the front 4 to get in the backfield more?

Thank you!! Every third question os about leadership!! Who cares? Ask pertinent questions.

What's confusing about it? Tons of people were always complaining year after year under HCDB that there wasn't enough info/video coming out of camp, but at least the reporters were there for the first 10 mins of practice. Now we barely get a 10 second instagram clip.

We have no idea which freshmen have surprised, which second/third year guys are stepping up, who's moving up and around the depth chart, who our starting OL is (or is shaping up to be).

I will say, In this day of the portal it makes more sense to keep that information a bit more on the down low.

Starting Angeli is the smart play. He has slightly more experience in meaningful situations.

Almost see this like the Allen/Hunt situation in 2013. Hunt was patient and ended up being the QB for the bulk of the season. Hopefully, Angeli does a lot better than Allen obviously.

Go around the paywall. Hint: archive.is

I joked about the Paywall earlier, but in all seriousness, I think that's a major factor in what you're describing. Syracuse.com hasn't posted much on twitter, but advertise you get their videos and practice reports via their text service (I'm not a subsciber to that, so I can't say if that's true or not)... I'd prefer free and on twitter, but it's hard to argue with trying to get more money if you look at the way their business has trended across the country.

I am going to take the opposite side on Pete being given the scoop. It does nothing to build up a relationship with the guys that cover the team every day. They are working every day to give the program coverage. And when something of really note happens, boom, they give the scoop to a national guy. I know Pete was a Syracuse guy. But he doesn't do anything to help the program locally. I see way too much of this sort of thing.
The local media stinks to put it nicely

I tend to agree with this. Although he could give it to both at the same time. I don’t think Thamel would cancel his tweet because Axe or Carlson or the new guy are tweeting it around the same time.

It's on the headlines section now, between articles about the starting QB's for Tennessee and Ohio St. Good company.

IMO, its ideal to have coverage both locally and nationally. The more exposure the program gets the better off they are. The national exposure further enhances the programs relevance and will help when it comes to recruiting, being considered for bigger bowl games and season kickoff games (like the Tennessee game which John Wildhack used a favor for Cuse to get into), and even the college football playoff (if on the bubble). I can't see how you can view the exposure as anything but a positive on all levels. Even the small time pod cast hosts and social media accounts help pushing the brand in their own way. It becomes a collective approach to reach as many people as possible.

everyone wants free info.. Fine, but at some point, someone is usually needing to get paid to produce the info.
I subscribe to Syracuse.com, the Athletic, and a ton of other independent journalism sites. I believe in paying for quality information.

However, in this scenario, if the reporters don't have access, they can't report. If there's not much worth paying for, no one is subscribing, so they can't pay the reporters. And then we have nothing but the drip-feed of social media that we get from the team.

I don't believe there's a lot of paywall worthy info coming from Axe's text service. Also, a media company shouldn't be running a text service when they have a perfectly good website to write practice reports on if they are getting that information.

My other big complaint is all the articles that are written are based off of two to three soundbites from the media availability from each practice. If you watch those videos, you can see the story being written before it comes out. It's just shoddy journalism.

yeah, how so? They need access to do their job. You do understand that, right? And the school doesn't call a national guy when they want information to be sent out locally. The call the local media. That should go both ways.
