Would the selection committee have a preference to NOT select three teams (possibly four?) from the same conference?

The SEC will always have an edge on the rest of us. I hate the SEC - but it’s a meat grinder - objectively. The team that wins that conference will likely have beaten 6 or 7 ranked teams.
