4 keys to a great year

Piggybacking off the DT talk... Anyone know how Caleb O looks. Came in as a DE but heard hes put on the weight to transfer over to DT. Maybe he could add some depth there.

Also was thinking if we struggle at LB, which I think we will be fine at. MAYBE, this is a hypothetical, you see Foster shift to LB and then they play either Clarke or Nunn at safety. if Nunn is as good as advertised he might be hard to keep off the field.

I'm concerned about the whispers in another thread of there being more injuries than we non-insiders are aware. As it was at least loosely verified by an insider, I can't help but wonder who (of course) and at what positions. There is enough time for a lot of mild injuries to heal and to get appropriate practice time, but there is room for some concern, too.
Hey, what's being a fan like without a little paranoia and handwringing?
Any one who didn't play in the Spring Game. Elmore and N.Johnson are the two with big braces on their legs.

Number one key to continued successful resurgence of Syracuse University Football is to remain as healthy as possible for as long as possible. Coach Babers doesn't say things just to hear himself talk. As he has said more than once, team depth is not where it needs to be yet. That being said, my number two key is for the continuation of players who have previously been off the radar because they were not eligible (Adams and Jackson, we got a glimpse of what they can bring in the bowl game) or Cisco and Szmyt last year to happen again this year. Kpogba, Jones, Wallace, Williams, Armstrong, Richards etc. at linebacker, Nunn in the secondary or return specialist. Just to have a continuation of new blood stepping in and playing at top ACC caliber play. My number three is a combination. The offensive line jells quickly and they allow the running game to allow Tommy DeVito to become that much more of a threat. I just have a feeling that what we will see from him this year and beyond is what Coach Babers has been talking about since he arrived. A prolific passer who has a tremendous running game to keep opposing defenses on their heels. It's tough to keep it to just four keys. Continued pressure from the defensive line, continued good play in the secondary and of course, Coach Lustig keeping the special teams play among the best in the nation.

However, number four for me is almost as important as number one. How does Syracuse University Football deal with the success of 2018? Do they now realize that they are not going to sneak up on anyone this year? It is extremely important that they continue to play with that "chip" on their shoulders. That they continue to have that one game at time mentality for them to be successful. If they do, they sky really is the limit. They are poised to join the big boys club and how they approach that will have a lot to do on how how this season goes. This is just my humble opinion, but I have not been this excited to find out in a very very long time. Go Orange!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think people are sleeping on Bear. Can't remember anyone talking about him until 721 Comstock mentioned him. He had a bit of a down year in '18 but I won't be surprised if he kills it in '19.

Can anyone confirm he's back? He didn't play one day in the Spring due to sickness?

I think one thing that is extremely underrated...

Our DL being so good is going to allow our green linebackers time to grow a bit. They’ll take the pressure off them.
Exactly! And our secondary gonna help the LBs as well

Biggest concern for me is run D. Slayton was a man and did a lot of work to mitigate that by himself. The DTs we have now are less true run stuffers and more disrupters. Need to play fundamentally sound and be in the proper position. If they don’t, then our LBs will get exposed if they are not ready yet.

The thing I think is gonna help us in the middle is that most teams I feel are gonna double our ends at playside to stop them until our inside guys start making plays and when that happens they will double anyone closest to gap they are running to, inside or outside. The 3 amigos in the middle can be really tough if each one makes a modest gain in the offseason. I still like Ruff the best as he flashed well at end of year but we shall see what the other two bring to the table. I agree that Slayton was a block eater. I feel ruff and black are less block eaters and more ball eaters. Ruffs first two steps are explosive so we will see what happens. I can’t wait. Also having Tyrell at lb will be a massive thing for us back there after it’s all said and done.

I think the areas we have the biggest holes are the easiest to hide or cover for - with the exception of the new starters on the OL. If they can come along, we're the #2 team in the division.

Nitpicking - we gave up too many big plays on D and we were still not efficient on O. I think some of the efficiency issues will get corrected by Tommy and the passing game.

this is spot on. I have rewatched some of last year's games on youtube and its clear that dungey moved the chains on his own a lot. We will lose that but hopefully we will be getting the ball out quicker and with more accuracy. Will be interesting to see how the offense will operate.

I've said this multiple times but the secondary got smoked a lot for big plays last year. That needs to be tightened up big time.

We got smoked deep on alot of plays and at times struggled against teams that just committed to continually running the ball to wear us down. Despite our record our defense struggled too much at times. We need to improve our consistency on D this year.

Yeah, and I look at hime and think, man, that's exactly the kind of player for program depth that we want to be able to redshirt. Would be really nice if he could have preserved a year of eligibility.

Yes we did but we were running with 2 freshmen back there plus Fred and scoop were hurt a bit. Will be a massive uprising this year now they know their shiiiit. We are bigger faster and longer than I ever remember back there. Defense will make a bigggggg leap this year as they should.

Number one success factor in 2019 is Tommy's ability to move and avoid 0 pressures in the pocket. If he can't do this, I fear for the outlook of our season.

My four keys:

1. Cohesive offensive line from the beginning of the season, not by week 4.

2. Stay healthy on the defensive line. We are good enough up the gut, but not deep enough to withstand injuries.

3. Keep Tommy off his back, and he'll generate a lot of offense this year.

4. Trust some of the young guys. I think our young LBs are studs. We have some promising talent on both lines. Of course, the secondary is young, but look what giving them a chance gave you back in return? One of the best collections of talent we've ever had back there. So, let's keep giving the young guys a chance. We will need the depth.
