40,769 attendance

I went to Wisconsin. You had 35,000 students and 25,000 went to every game. Then people came from all around the state. Wisconsin football is a huge deal and people plan their weekends. They stay in motels and with friends and they go to the Badger game, get rip roaring drunk and they DO NOT LEAVE after two hours because they have to get home. We have 13,000 students at SU and how many attend the football game? 1000? 2000? I sit above them and can’t see. Basketball attendance is similarly pathetic from the student fan base.

I can't fathom why we do not allow all students to attend for free and have it built into the cost of admission. We have never tried this and its dumb. Thats 5k more butts in the stands per game easily. They need to at least do this for football. But I guess this won't happen for accounting/bookkeeping reasons.

The band getting half of the best seats for basketball also bothered me a lot you had to be crazy early to get the first few rows. Student section was a blast for football and good seats but a complete ripoff for hoops. Tickets weren't included for games that happened during break (felt ripped off didn't get tickets to MSU and another big name the year I had them) which was lame if you were still around when school wasn't happening of course you wanted to go to the game.

The student section also limited you to 1 beer at a time. I wasn't exactly trying to give away my constitutional right to purchase 4 Dome foams at a time (for myself:cool::cool:) that was awesome no other venue lets you buy 4 at once. Not everyone has an ID if you sit in the student section your friends can't buy you beers you need a different wrist band. What college kid wants to sit through a 4 hour game without a cold one? I wasn't sitting in the dang student section after freshman year and wouldn't buy student tickets if I went back to SU for a PHD or something. I'd assume 60% of fans in the student section were freshmen from experience and it looks like the ratio is the same these days when they show it on TV. I'm a lifelong fan but a SU student who didn't grow up rooting for SU and doesn't have the season package can't be expected to attend more than 1-2 games per year across both sports if they have to pay 20-30 per game.

I truly hated the basketball student section as much as I loved the 4 beers at a time limit but I don't see anything changing it is what it is. Our fan support is great in general the midweek Lville game I attended a couple years ago which Roberson blew was a much better crowd than we'd have had for a similar game a decade earlier. Win 10 games and keep Dino and football will be comparable. If we got really good and made student tickets free my guess is we get around 10000 students per game for the biggies.

I don't know anyone who had student section season tickets after they were freshmen. I am not exaggerating. Literally noone bought them after freshman year.

InRe what it looked like on tv. In the second half, the wide crowd shots of field level seats made the dome looke half empty. Lots of empty seats and silver. When they focused on the student section or another active group, it looked great. It certainly sounded loud and the band sounded good too. I love the way the dome sounds when the fans are into it.

I was there. It was not a good crowd. Not sure where the 40k number came from, but the crowd was not more than 30k in the seats.

It was loud as hell though at times. Always amazing to hear how much the diehards can get that place rocking when they need to. Late 4th qtr was deafening.
False. There was legit 40k in seats. There were people in the top corners for the first time in ages.

The high ground of this fan base cracks me up. First not enough people go to the game. Now let's judge how long people stay to trust fan status. I left my seat at halftime to move to a box. A buddy left after the 3rd to get his sons home as they had an AM commitment. I'll have him flogged next time I see him. Great time great win and people showed up. The judgement is insane.

How can those big boys (Ohio State, Alabama and the like) have 85,000 or even 100,000 regularly?

A lot of people here don’t seem to get it but brand and tradition are massive in building that type of loyalty.

We can’t seem to figure out consistency for both.

Half my friends left before the end of the first to go to a costume bar crawl. I stayed 20 mins past end of regulation and wouldve stayed another hour if i could. Enormous satisfaction

Crowd looked good on TV although, and I've said this before, holding back blocks of seats means there will always be some ugly sections up top. Definitely saw high 30s. 40 doesn't feel like a stretch and if people who were there say it, I get it.

I'm glad people showed up, whether they left early or not. We could be complaining about the weather and how nobody showed up because of it. Or how nobody is going to show up the rest of the season because we lost by 30.

As far as brand and tradition. SU is a nationwide brand. The problem with the football program is we've mostly sucked or just been okay for such a long period of time. If you don't get the long-term impact of 10+ years of college students having very little reason to get excited for SU football AND 10+ years of local kids having no reason to buy/watch SU football, then you don't understand factors in building a brand/tradition.

What would Alabama's crowds look like if their program looked like ours the last 10+ years?

Another thing... please in the renovation, put better lighting in! The place looks dreary as hell on tv.
Hoping the clear panels in the renovation will let in more natural light, which would help immensely.

Most of these college kids aren't old enough to drink.

Yes and SU isn't going to encourage them to drink illegally. 10 years ago very few college stadiums even sold beer. The SEC with their large crowds don't allow stadium beer sales still, yet it doesn't keep their students away.

Audio’s definitely a part of it. I’d imagine with a new roof, new lighting would come as well.

The question is do either of them come with the 1st round of Reno’s? I’d think audio yes, lighting, no.
Lighting has to come with the new roof, unless we're playing in the dark. LED light package. If they shell out $$$ it could be insane.

7 football games left with the current roof.

You're underselling the student section,* especially in basketball.

Many of the guys who come from all around the state are alumni, or have alumni in the family. That's the other huge advantage that those big state schools have. And lastly, Madison to Chicagoland is about 2 hours, and MKE is closer. It's been a while since I've driven SYR to NYC, but I think it's tangibly longer.

*Keep in mind that this was parent's weekend, too.
I go to all the bball games and they seldom fill up the lower section during non-conference. And of course they are gone for a month over New Year’s. They show up big for the big games. You KNOW they’ll show up for Duke!

I don’t want to rag on the students. During our 2009-10 season they were fantastic! That was the year of the big heads. It was fun to watch them. They made the Dome come alive. I hope they turn out big this year because it’s going to be a big year. GO SU STUDENTS!

Your attendance guesstimating meter needs some serious recalibration. At its peak in the 2nd quarter it was 40K.

I mean, are you serious? We weren't even close to 40k. I'll redirect the calibration comment back to you.

i dont know why people expect us to get 45K when 90% of the country is struggling to sell tickets.. UV is having a huge season and the place was 1/2 empty in the upper ring today.

students dont care about football and free tickets wont make 1 bit of difference.

At the Clemson game, the dude sitting next to us left at halftime after cursing up a storm about us constantly “targeting” their QBs and 3 former frat guys by us left in the 3rd Quarter.

This happens everywhere, and I don’t get it at all, but it’s easier to stomach when you have 82,000 in the stands.

Top 25 type team regularly and we’ll have 40k+ every ACC game with sellouts for big games. That’s all we need. Looks great on tv and is loud as hell.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the punishment for leaving the Dome early to honor an am commitment is having to walk around campus 7x wearing nothing but a loin cloth, while true fans yell “shame” at you and hurl rotten tomatoes.

And yes, they must be tomatoes, and they must be rotten.
