8/20/15 Practice # 12 At Fort Drum

Either Long is still getting a redshirt this year or he will be moving to holder.

Dixon holds. And he throws a pretty mean TD ball.

No reason to blow a potential redshirt for Long just to hold.

Yes, of course because people like players are either useful or useless. Pass or fail, right?

3rd string backup holder who will take a redshirt, maybe?

Either way, writing may be on the wall.

I think it's pretty much a certainty that it's on the wall. Maybe AJ will surprise us all, but with Dungey, and then Rex and potentially David Moore, and then the QBs we are involved with in the 2017 recruiting class (two excellent prospects are very high on SU), I'm just not sure how AJ is going to hold them off given his physical limitations.

To be an undersized qb in D1 ball today you have to be exceptional. It is rare for a 6 foot 180 pound kid to overcome the lack of size let alone survive the pounding that they take. Just look at Hunt who is a beast compared to Long. There is simply no comparison. Dungey has the frame and size. Combine that with what seems to be beyond solid skills and yes the writing is on the wall for AJ

He needs a haircut. I can't take him seriously looking like he did in the video above.

First, if AJ is 6'0" I'm 6'5". According to one coach I talked to, he is closer to 5'10".

IMO, his height isn't the issue...his glaring lack of athletic ability is. When you're a shorter QB (Flutie, R. Wilson) , you need to be an exceptional athlete, possess savvy pocket presence and a strong arm. AJ comes up short in at least 2 out of 3 of these traits. Great kid...I hope he proves me wrong.

It is hard to show you are an exceptional athlete when you are running for your life like AJ did last year. Especially when you are constantly hampered by injuries...like I don't know, getting stepped on across your collar bone, broken hand, shoulder and whatever other minor stuff we don't hear about.

I was told that pound for pound he is one of the stronger guys on the team, he benches 225 17-18 times at 185 lbs.

I was told the same thing regarding his pound for pound strength.

I didn't say he wasn't.

Fair enough. But you're implying Hunt has remained average - despite multiple indicators of improvement - and that good would beat average. So if Dungey is even good, he should start. That would make sense if the first part was true. Apparently most observers disagree.

Was it attending practices/scrimmages or something else that led to your assumption about Terrell? We all know he can run, and he "flashed" his passing potential 2 years ago taking over from DA (yeah, I know, I know). No faith at all it has improved a little since? Or that he hasn't matured any since 'Nova? Debbie Downer ;)

Because he does not even have to be great to be better than Hunt. I would start the best quarterback; call me crazy.
Hunt's a proven leader. That is something you learn and then earn. I think it'd be a mistake to choose promise over proven ability to lead/win.

I think Hunt's ceiling is probably somewhere around "pretty good." I haven't watched practice this year so I cannot speak to his improvement. I do feel comfortable saying that he was worse in 2014 than he was in 2013. There are factors that contributed to that, but I don't think he should get a complete pass (pun intended). Hunt has two impressive games on his resume (BC 2013, Minnesota 2013). That is not enough for me to call him a "proven winner or leader."

I don't see myself as a downer with Hunt. I have hopes that he will look like the guy in those games for most of this season. I do not think it is completely out of the realm of possibility that Dungey is better than Hunt already. I am not saying it is likely. I really cannot say at all because I haven't seen either practice this year, but I do not think it is an impossibility.

Injuries aside, isn't that the BEST time to show you're an exceptional athlete? Making plays out of nothing? Isn't that what guys like Randall Cunningham, Mike Vick, and Donovan McNabb always did?

Was j/k about Debbie. IMO Hunt's ceiling is higher - good to very good. We'll see soon enough. If we stay healthy, it wouldn't surprise me if his passing improves dramatically. The OL should be fine, and he has enough playmakers around.

Dungey obviously separated himself from Womack very quickly, and it was a good strategy to move KW early to maximize his WR practice time. Looks like he contributes this year. ED will likely pass Wilson soon, and (likely) get some mop-up reps in the 1st 3 games. But, unless he gets significantly better than Hunt, the latter's experience and moxie cannot be ignored.

I don't think strength and athleticism are linked.

At a skill position, I would prefer athleticism over strength, especially if the person being discussed has physical attributes that are limiting (height, arm strength).

AJ seems like a great program kid who will likely work very hard - and could provide quality depth at the position over the next 3-4 years. And as we saw against FSU/Wake, in small doses he can do some things that can help win games.

But the longer deficient players are forced to play - whether they're deficient due to youth, inexperience, physical limitations, talent, or whatever - the more they are exposed. I just don't see how his physical limitations at the position he plays is going to allow for him to be a viable option to start.

The coaching staff does not seem to agree with me, but I would not waste Dungey's eligibility on mop-up duty. I would live with Long or Wilson (ugh) as in-game replacements and only use Dungey if Hunt is out for an extended period of time.

SUfan44, I think you may be writing him off prematurely. There aren't many true freshman QBs who would be able to walk into a starting role their first year and be expected to execute the play book. ESPECIALLY for a team with a patchwork offensive line and a dearth of playmakers.

I'm not suggesting that Long is Marvin Graves. Time will tell whether he ever gets to start, or whether he's been recruited over by the Dungeys / Culpeppers of the world. But this is a kid who should have been redshirted to improve both his physique [which by all accounts he has this past off-season, for the record] and his command of the offense. Instead, he got thrown to the wolves and won a game.

My opinion only, but Long's story is far from being written. Wouldn't be remotely surprised to see him start next year if he can improve his arm strength a bit. Also wouldn't be surprised to see Culpepper come in and challenge to be a four year starter, or for Dungey to emerge as Hunt's successor. But those writing off a kid with Long's work ethic and selling short his physical capabilites are acting in haste. Again, my opinion only.

Making him #2 now will get him not just mop-up duties. The plan seems to be to get him ready for next year. Then they'll do the same with Rex.

If Dungey is going to start next year and the staff believes that they need to get him as many snaps as possible this year. There is nothing like live game action to prepare a kid. He needs to play
