I got sick of looking at the boards of teams Like Florida state bad mouthing us so I finally decided to challenge there theory about us being just basketball school and not worth being an ACC member. I seemed to have stirred up a hornets nest as my topic now has more than sixties replies over on the scout noles reservation board. They seem to think the last time were were any good was the 60's and 70's. they seems to think that no one cares about football in Syracuse as i got called the only Syracuse fan with passion there is.

The point being that there is much misinformation about how good we were even less than 15 years ago. And what a tough place the dome was to play at. It really is a shame the perception of our program and how far we fell under GRob. There is just a perception that we dont even care about football and thats a shame. Hopefully that will change soon but man we have a long ways to go perception wise.

In case you want to see what they think of use the topic is "please get over yourselves". Its an eye opener of how far we have fallen in such a short time and how far we need to go to get respect back.

I've visited those boards and heard it all and I agree it can be disheartening if you let it get to you. It really makes you appreciate how much damage Greg Robinson did in terms of national perception of our program. Greg basically erased 30+ years of Syracuse football history. People elsewhere in the country may recall that Donovan McNabb and Dwight Freeney played for Syracuse, but they don't really know Marvin Graves, Donnie McPherson, Qadry Ismael, Tim Green and Moose Johnston. The undefeated 1987 team is barely remembered outside of the northeast.

Well, the hell with the FSU fanboys. I prefer to look to the future, not the past 10 years. Having followed the fortunes of the Orangemen the past 50 years, I know these things are cyclical. We are due for a rebound and I believe Doug Marrone has us on the right path. Will he lead us to an ACC championship within the next 3-4 years? I've got no idea, but I believe we'll be in the hunt. And I can tell you this with a certainty: SU will victimize the Seminoles by 2016 at the latest.

Oh, and post this over there.

1959 National Champions
8 Heisman Trophy Finalists (Brown, Davis, Littlex2, Freeney, McNabb, McPherson, Csonka)
1 Heisman Trophy Winner
42 Consensus All-Americans
14 College Football Hall of Famers
7 NFL Hall of Famers (Brown, Little, Csonka, Ringo, Mackey, Davis, Monk) With Freeney, Coughlin, and Harrison on the way.
686-484-49 (.582) All-Time Record (15th All-Time Wins)
12-9-1 Postseason Record

Reality is that it's been 15+ years since we've been relevant on a national stage. No one under the age of 30 remembers us as a national power (not including our own fan-base).

11 years ago we finished 14 in the polls. That was probably the last season we were relevant nation wide.

Agreed. And we kept relevance for a little while after that because of the likes of McNabb, Harrison, Freeney, etc in the NFL. But the Gerg years did us in. Our win the Pinstripes two years ago showed it wouldn't take long to get back some relevance if (and it's a big if) we can consistently win.

Just hope that two years ago wasn't a hiccup, but the promise of things to come.

I continue to wait and see.

Cheers,
Neil

GRob certainly accelerated our reputation's decline, but we were becoming nationally irrelevant while P was still at the helm. DM is doing things right by building a solid base and establishing relationships in necessary recruiting areas.

FSU fans need to be reminded that football was indeed played prior to 1987 and they weren't all the spectacular prior to that. With all of their success, they've never produced a player as dominant as a guy by the name of Jim Brown. How many college awards are named after former FSU players? Oh that's right... none.

To be fair, that was the lowest impact 10-win, top-15 season imaginable. Started 0-2, so no one paid attention as we ran off the subsequent 8 game win streak. Then we finally get some pub with a College GameDay slot in Miami... and get beat FIFTY-NINE TO NOTHING.

Then we got hosed out of the Gator Bowl thanks to our pals in Providence, and beat a crappy K-State team on a weekday afternoon bowl game.

So yeah, not gonna kill anyone over not remembering that season.

Remember when Florida and Florida State didn't become relevant until about 1990? , Miami has more tradition than those two schools.

At 28 years old, my peer group is always amazed when i run off the list off football greats that came from SU. They truly have no idea.

Geez you guys, time to spell out a basic tenet of college football.

Winning is great, but watching your rivals and peers get humiliated is even better.

App State t-shirts will always be cool in Columbus. Michigan fans putting up Liar Liar Vest on Fire billboards. Penn State. FSU will always have a sore bunghole about Wide Right I and II.

Point is, the fans of a program are the only ones that remember the really great seasons.

Everyone else has a shovelful of dirt waiting for you to trip. (We tripped and got buried, paved over, and they built a new Trader Joe's without putting up a historical marker.)

That's all well and good, but it likely won't impress FSU fans and does little to prove that we are relevant in today's landscape. That said, FSU hasn't done anything noteworthy in college football in a long time either.

That's Florida State over the past 7 years (starting in 2011 and working back to 2004). Given their "brand" and location it's stunning to see those mediocre records.

As a comparison, here is ACC jugernaut Boston College over the past 7 years:

4-8
7-6
8-5
9-5
11-3
10-3
9-3
58-33

So they might just want to first overcome that gap with BC before they yap about anything.

Scooch: How many of FSU's wins in those 7-6, 8-5 years were over less than BCS-level (or the equivalent) schools?

I have no idea. I'm making a snarky point, don't confuse me with nuance.

Well, if you really wanted to give a snarky reply you could have said "hey, I counted the discounted wins the NCAAs took away from them, what else do you want?" ;)

Cheers,
Neil
