A note on Kingz' perimeter shooting

Kingz is the one player who hasn't seem to fully integrate yet with the overall structure of the team's offensive concept. Everyone else has "fit in," so to speak.

Given how shooting-challenged we are overall, it would be great to get him integrated / comfortable. If he doesn't improve, then we could see a situation where a guy like Anthony steals minutes [and maybe a starting role] at the 3, when JJ returns.

Not predicting that will happen, but it could.

Watching the tape I see different threes here compared to last year. Jake mentioned this in another thread but Kings isn’t a creator he needs the ball in the flow of the offense. Work the ball to Freeman kick it out and swing it around for spot up open three. On the break find him for a trailing 3 or on the wing for a three. Right now I think he is dribbling too much before his three point shot. If he does have to dribble I would rather not see him take to a pull up three but get to the basket which he seems to do well.

He has tape at the P4 level so I am not going to critique his form or anything like that because it clearly works for him as he has proved it before. I think his issue is just how and where he his getting his 3 point shots.

He's also 6th in FGA/game on the team, not counting for when JJ comes back. His inefficiency this year has been muted a bit because of the lack of volume of shots.

I think shooting in the flow of the offense will start to happen more naturally when we play harder teams. Anyone that can shoot 40%+ from three in any single year in D1 should just focus on being a poor man's Klay Thompson (for this level, Klay is a top 5 shooter of all time). Move, learn how to hit a three coming off a screen going left and going right. Be able to use a ball fake. Stuff like that.

Kingz also plays D, boards, etc. So he is filling gaps in other ways.

The dude shot 42% last year. Give him a beat to integrate in for his shooting, because at this point, we'll need what his ceiling brings more than JJ's since we have backfilled him already.

his mechnics are off...his shooting motion is reluctant and not fluid...seems to pause a bit on the way up and doesnt seem to be squared up to the rim...gives the vibe he doesnt really wanna shoot (at least thats what i noticed in the drexel game)
almost as if the shot isn’t coming off his fingers right and too much palm (Insert joke here). But it’s causing a bit of a line drive. Think he just needs to shoot and not think about it. It’s a really slow shot at the moment. Looks like he’s trying to set his legs and it seems and go step by step. Hopefully he figures it out.

It is puzzling that there's a disconnect between how good it sounded like he was fitting in preseason and what his play on the court has been.

That said, I feel like once he has a game where he hits a good 3-4 threes he turns the corner and doesn't look back.

I don’t think it helps it feels like the last guy we look for in half court sets. Going back to exhibitions he’s had multiple games where he hasn’t touched the ball at least 5-6 possessions in a row.

Agreed 144%.

Would be great if we could either:
A- have Nait drive, then kick to an open Kingz
B - pass it in to Kyle or Donnie, then have them reverse it to an open Kingz

We've seen all 3 of our opponents use ball movement to get them open looks from 3.
With a plus playmaker like Nait, and all the other teammates seemingly being willing and able passers, we really should be able to generate some decent looks for Kingz.

While we haven’t lit it up from 3- getting buckets hasn’t been an issue as a team even with some cold stretches. As certain looks dry up due to competition, finding looks off multiple screens and kickouts for Nate will be there and likely earlier in the game. Watching all 3 games you can see him open many times but there is also a driving lane or a cutting big as well so there are easier options around the rim or over a shorter defender etc…

yeah its so slow. idk what it is but it looks like hes going to miss when he shoots

i think he needs wide open 3s so he can take his time...which is where ball movement comes in

most of the guys are looking for their own shot and able to get it thus kingz doesnt often end up getting the looks he will thrive on

again, I think its about passing up good looks to get great ones (like a wide open 3, for example)

He is a proven shooter. He hasn't forgotten how to shoot. It looks more like he is currently struggling with confidence and fitting into the rhythm of the offense that has other options. He needs to stay aggressive, keep shooting, and look for ways to score. Getting 3s in the transition offense could be a key.

We absolutely need Kingz to be a weapon from 3 (achilles heel for this team to date). I agree with you - he needs to hit big shots in the Houston-Kansas-Tenn run to gain confidence and return to form.

He’s #1 on the team in Evan Miya’s player efficiency metrics. Kingz will be playing a whole lot, and his 3-point shooting numbers are bound to improve significantly.

The key for Kingz is George staying aggressive attacking the paint. He had some good kick out to open shooters on Saturday. As the season progresses, the team will get more creative on ways to get him open looks.

IIRC he was quoted sometime in the last week or so that adjusting to the Dome has been a challenge for him. Of course Saturday's game was on the road, but still. I haven't crunched tape to get a closer look at mechanics and how clean the looks have been, but that could be an explanation. Either way, at least he's contributing in other ways, but he's here to space the defense so hopefully it clicks for him. We'll need him in Vegas and beyond.
