A prediction...

Anyone else hoping Oliver Luck ends up in federal "pound me in the ..." prison?

I may not be terrible imaginative but I cannot think of a way the NCAA would be complicit UNLESS they received complaints and did not report them to law enforcement. Can anyone think of any other way they would be involved?

And put me down for wanting to see the whole lot of them thrown in jail. And if they can prove selection bias in the sanctions against us like we all think happened ... oh, here go hell come.

So I guess the theory is that the NCAA, or certain officers affiliated with the organization, was taking boatloads of sneaker money in order to turn and look the other way?

Perhaps, I mean Adidas was able to essentially buy the refs at that AAU basketball tournament this summer.

My gut tells me, however, that is was simply a case of the big boys wanting to handle something and viewed the NCAA as useless to them. After all, how many times do the feds bitch about having to work alongside the state and local authorities on an investigation, and those guys have real clout? The NCAA, otoh, couldn't get out of there own way.

The NCAA hoops tourney will have proven too much for the org to handle. Bet we will find out the NCAA knows about it all and doesn't make waves, to protect the golden goose. Selective sanctions, etc.
This is no different than MLB and the steroid scandal. They looked the other way for a long time because it was bringing in millions of dollars with these guys hitting a bazillion homers. Once these other shady scum got involved then they realized they needed to do something about Bonds and ARod. Otherwise Barry Bonds would still be playing and would have about 1200 dingers by now.

After the real dirty underbelly of college basketball has now been exposed, it is high time for the NCAA crooks to give Boeheim his wins back. A few players got paid a few hundred dollars for actually refereeing in a summer league and a poor kid from a South American barrio had help organizing his thoughts and putting them on paper in a coherent way all the while these NCAA dirt bags knew all this was going on? Give Jim Boeheim back his hard earned wins now you criminals.
boo

Post of the year.

I'd be surprised if it did. The NCAA wouldn't jeopardize their entire business over some schools that are irrelevant in a sport that's not a hundredth of their revenue maker.

Are they corrupt, probably, to this magnitude? Absolutely not.

The sanctions brought against Syracuse destroyed every credibility the NCAA had with this fanbase because they still can't understand how we're not perfect.

They lost credibility with this fan base because they throw the book at schools breaking the speed limit while murders are happening right around the corner that they are either intentionally or incompetently taking a blind eye to.

I also think along the lines of your prediction, college athletics will be brought into congressional cross hairs. Can’t imagine Mitch McConnell is happy about this.

When is the Title IX suit going to commence? If all these guys are getting paid in one way or another as some have alleged, are the women getting paid as well?

I don't know if this is what you are insinuating, but can you imagine if the NCAA (or more likely, certain administrators/officers/whoever) knew about these under the table sneaker payments to players, but kept it quiet in order to prevent having to open a larger can of worms to pay athletes similar money from their coffers? Intentionally allowing illegal payments to avoid having to pay anything out yourselves is hypocritical, greedy and could flat out destroy the NCAA as we know it.

That'd be fun.

I doubt it. Even if they are accused of creating an environment for illegal recruiting, illegal recruiting and payment of players in itself is not illegal. It's the conspiracy and bribery element of it.

The NCAA can also somewhat legitimately claim that it has limited ability to chase the money trail. Unlike the FBI, it has less access to records and can't just get subpoenas when they want them.

The best hope I have out of all of this is that the P5 finally gets away from the NCAA. Is much more open about payments. Admits that football and basketball players spend more time on the craft than other athletes (deeming them employees is a good way to get around Title 9), give them life skill courses instead of graduate diplomas (if the player chooses).

Yes, whatever rules they place around compensation could be circumvented by some, but that is not an excuse not to have any legit compensation. By this system now that gets people paid, you are putting coaches, assistants, directors and players at risk of jail time which is totally idiotic. Create a system that is more open and just takes that element out for most.

Yes, the payment will create any uneven playing field between P5 and non P5. But that is the way it has always been anyway.

the highlighted passage is utterly divorced from what actually happened
My understanding was he was supposed to write a paper on his life story and how he got to SU, and that would have kept him in good academic standing. The paper was accurate to his journey, so my guess was that he had help writing it.

The system is certainly broke, and has been for sometime. But, if you think payment will only keep the playing field uneven between P5 & and non P5's, I think that's inaccurate. The high power state P5 schools will end up being in a league by themselves, and only further separate themselves from the other P5's. It's already an issue...just look at those high end P5's facilities, living quarters, etc. vs. other P5's struggling just to tread water...

That would be the best result of this or any investigation. Finally putting some teeth into the belief of the majority that it is a corrupt and outdated group, who's time passed years ago.

I certainly agree... it will create an uneven playing field at the P5 level as well. But that already exists.

Will it further exaggerate it .. perhaps. If they are a new league it's up to them really. If the P5 separates themselves it's up to them as a league essentially what they think is best for creating wealth (parity or total non parity)... they might enact measure to keep things closer but that also allow clear advantages.

Kobie Baker, Alabama's director of basketball operations the last 2 seasons, resigned due to this investigation. His previous job: at the NCAA, as assistant director of enforcement for basketball development and as the associate director of amateurism certification.

It's really no different than when a person works for a government agency, and then moves to a more lucrative job with corporation as they know the rules... and how to get around them.

I love most of your post, but as far as Melo was concerned... Someone wrote the paper for him basically, and there was a meeting of the minds convened by our phony AD to do what needed to be done to keep him eligible. Let's face it, any other school pulls that crap we are wanting them to get the death penalty. With that being said, if that piece of sh** Paterno got his wins back for covering up the most horrific acts that can be committed, then JB sure as hell deserves his wins back.

With the facts exposed about UNC, requiring athletes to even write a paper seems so 'old school'. A single player had to write a paper for a real class and the AD had a meeting to address the issues a professor had with the paper because it didn't pass muster- UNC didn't have to even worry about those details and the NCAA says it wasn't in their wheelhouse. Amazing times we live in. Both schools were definitely wrong but the degrees aren't even comparable.
