This will never happen but I would be 100% behind it as a way to get SU back to respectability asap.
Syracuse needs a great coach. Not a great recruiter rather a brilliant coach who can teach kids. Coach them up. It would be great if that coach had local ties, was well respected and would resonate with our boosters. A coach who has the knowledge and experience to work with Kline to construct a great winning roster within the budget.

I love basketball, follow it and feel as if I can see a good coach.
There happens to be one of the best coaches I've ever known up the road at D2 Daemen college.
Mike MacDonald. He's older, we might get 3 to 5 years but he's a brilliant coach and a very good person. He's a coaching legend who can beat you with his and beat you with yours kind of coach.
Pay him 1.5 a year and let him bring some great young coaches and Syracuse would be back.
I realize it is out there but so was a young DB coach from GA who was never a coordinator let alone a head coach at any level.
If I was AD I'd reach out to him

Interesting. He definitely seems to have the coaching chops.

And they are ranked #1 in D2 right now without a full scholarship budget, so he certainly wouldn't use NIL as an excuse!

I don't know as a fanbase if the coach will ever meet our expectations, just is what it is.

Woke up this morning and said ok one more ACCT game for us. Then I looked and thought well the last 2 Final Four ACC teams did not even make the ACCT. One the coach quit and the other just seems like a trainwreck.

I say this all to mean let's say we find that perfect coach; can we keep him or the players he coaches up? I'm not sure we can right now.

I know it's not Autry and we need a better staff, i'm just saying the game has changed so much, I just think it's all just money. The playing field is just so uneven now.

We don't need to spend millions on a coach. We need to hire a true coach. Someone who understands how to construct a roster, how to instill proper training, How to X and O. This guy can do that and through good coaching he will end up gaining respect and putting kids in the league. What i don't want is an expensive re-tread or a coach who doesn't have an identity.

Why was he such a total flop at Canisius?

I'm sure he is an excellent coach. Who is he going to recruit here? You need talent and all the Hoosier stuff is romantic and all, but it won't work here. (RIP Gene Hackman)

Got it. Yeah we need talent.
Scooch my point is that the talent is going to come to a large degree via the portal. Pitino is pretty much spot on. Unless we can sign multiple year deals with incoming frosh or unless they are bonafide stars why waste time and money on them. None of them will come for free. All of them want to start. I would rather bring in maybe two frosh per year. One a star the other hopefully a piece that is told they will play and the following year they will start. Rather spend the money on brining in portal players each year and have a coach that can construct a good roster and coach them up. Rather than a team of players that dont fit and or compliment each other. I believe that Mike is that kind of coach. Gmac might be as well.
Red is a good recruiter. Very good at nurturing the kids from a personal standpoint. More like a Dad than coach. In my opinion he isnt the brightest bulb in the lamp and simply doesnt have the chops to beat equally or more talented teams via his coaching. I also dont think he has the ability to excell at all of the other skills requred to run a major program. Good dog cant hunt.
He will get next year and if any progress is shown and Melo and those in charge sign off, he will also get a fourth year which unless he does well will be his last.

We need someone to coach modern basketball with modern systems, period. If that is him great if it isn't him then I don't want him. I want a fast-paced game. Floor spacing on offense. Shooting 3s. etc. Passionate Defense. That is what the kids want to play. That is the way the NBA plays. That is the way the SEC plays. If you want to attract talent, you need to play the way the talent wants to play.

Someone like MM as an assistant would give me a sliver of hope for next year, but it's unlikely he would leave a successful situation to basically be the brains behind SU bball without being HC. I do think Autry's personality and recruiting chops would probably be a good match for someone that's more of a pure strategist, but I'm not sure we could recruit someone like that for Autry's lameduck year 3.

Agree. I'd be ok with him as a strategic assistant coach, but not as head coach at this level. You need more than X's and O's for that.

One week ago you started a thread about how to rebuild the basketball program. Your number 1 bullet point was to "hire an up and coming coach...not a retread."

He sounds like a good punt if we were, say... dropping down to the patriot league.

That would be his next logical step and station... D1 low or mid-majpr.

You don't walk into a P4 HC job from D2.

A coach still has to attract talent. In many, many cases the money will be similar between schools that are trying to acquire a guy.

So what then? How does a player choose?

Well, that’s when a coach still has to recruit. What’s the vision for the program? The vision for how said player fits? How can the school help a player get to the next level? What can they offer to help their post-playing career?

I simply don’t buy for one millisecond that one can run a successful program being good at Xs and Os but also being a terrible recruiter.

NIL and player compensation is not an auction. Acquiring talent still requires coaches with that skill set. Without it a team will suck.

So, we've moved on from the Arkansas St. coach already?

I like him. I like this style of coaching on the sideline. I like his systems of basketball. He runs the same stuff as Alabama. He was a great recruiter for Oats. Can he be a great P4 head coach? Who knows, but he is an up and coming coach putting together a nice looking resume so far.
