Abrupt change in recruiting...

So basically by this logic because BJ Johnson went to LaSalle and became a great player it means nothing because he went to that powerhouse known as LaSalle.

There's nothing wrong with becoming a good player at LaSalle. They might not win a national championship, but BJ could have really helped us his last couple years of college.

Who is the 4th guard?
No chance the 4th guard plays except during walk-on time.
I would love to play 9.
I won’t believe it.
JB wants every win. Can’t risk games playing the bench is his mantra and it won’t change.

Alan Griffin could play guard for us for 5-10 minutes a game, with Woody or Braswell and Q at the forwards. Add in Kadary and that would be a seriously athletic lineup.

You would still have three 3-point shooters to space the floor, a guard who can get in the lane and a guy with an inside game who can convert around the rim.

You don't play that lineup all game, but if you played that lineup when teams are scoring at will against slow defenders, it might be worth a shot. And put one of those young guys in there at center, just to jump around and try to block everything around the rim, like we used to do.

Our zone is SO much better when it's more athletic.

The number one factor is the demise of the big east. Su vs Gt or ucon was a big deal. Su vs an acc team is a nothing burger. Only the Ville has prospered outside the be, but they cheat and they have natural rivals in the acc. Why play for us when other acc teams offer more excitement? Stop blaming our coaches. The problem is that the package we are selling has been downsized. When we lost our rivals the glow was gone.

SU leaving the Big East for fb$ was the demise of both SU bb and fb. This is reiterated in these posts and is the primary reason for the mediocrity of bb and fb.

What you say is true but then why doesn’t the HC do it if he wants to win every game?

Both statements are true. Sometimes there are no good options.

Almost half of the ACC is former Big East.
Boston College
Louisville
Miami
Virginia Tech
Pittsburgh
Notre Dame
Syracuse

The ACC isn’t why we have been medicore.
It’s been the loss of Mike Hopkins and Jim Boeheim not recruiting elite players here.

It’s not because we don’t play Providence, seton Hall and Villanova.

My god we have enough talent to recruit in our areas. Our problems are not Big East related.

It’s talent.

We lack our traditional talent because there is no longer any buzz / gravitas to our games. The acc is not good for NE teams. We are Irrelevant outsiders. A fish out of water.

Our recruiting issues/talent go way beyond our rivalry games with uconn/gtown/nova. We still played uconn up until recently and still play gtown. Being in the ACC is not the reason for our decline in talent/recruiting but to each their own.

It is no longer relevant that we occasionally play GT and UCon. If the BE had survived our recruiting would have survived. We managed to recruit just fine before Hopkins.

Wholeheartedly disagree. The idea of playing UNC/Duke etc every year would carry just as much weight with recruits (considerably more in actuality) than any game with an old BE squad. We lack buzz because our players have not been up to historical standards. It is that simple.

The issues are as obvious as can be and fully rooted in subpar recruiting - an aging coach loyal to a staff with limited abilities, sanctions, and the loss of our top recruiter. All at the same time. It isn't rocket science. If you think a top notch young coach could not come in and kill it on the recruiting trail at SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY you are selling the program way short. Imagine what Oates would be doing right now at this program. He is bringing 5 star Canadians to Alafreakinbama. Imagine what he would do here.

No one cares if we play duke. We have no rivalry with them. It is the rivalry that creates the buzz. No one is coming here because they get a chance to play duke. It is easy to underestimate the significance of our loss of rivals. Recruits came to us because they wanted to beat our rivals, just as recruits go to Duke because they want to beat NC. Rivalries count. Loss of rivals is not irrelevant.

Not sure where you get these ideas that 16, 17 year old HS kids are coming for a rivalry with mediocre programs. They want to play in front of 30k, against the biggest names in the game, with the most publicity. Full stop. Rivalies, sure nice to to have, but that isn't the reason we have sucked on the trail. Who are Villanova's amazing rivals that have led them to their success the last 10 years? It is good recruiting and good coaching.

Our problems are related to a septuagenarian coach who is loyal to his assistants to a fault, the loss of a stud recruiter, and sanctions. Those are three massive issues to deal with. Now put them together and what do you have... it is almost amazing we haven't had a losing season yet.

All that said, this program has as much upside as any outside a top 4. And that is not hyperbole. It all comes down to getting the right hire.

UCon and GT were not mediocre programs, neither was Pitt and others. The BE dominated college basketball and we were a major player in the BE. BE games were prime time features. They attract fans nationwide and recruits. Why deny this? Our problems are Largely circumstantial. We have less to offer than we used to.

impressive! I had to look up what a septuagenarian is. Great word

We all miss our old rivalries, and not being in the Big East probably hurt us just a little bit on the recruiting trail because we were one of the flagship/marquee programs of the Big East, along with UConn, Gtown and Nova (and later Louisville). But when we went to the ACC, we didn’t lose all our status and history and success. All of that still applies. Heck, we’ve gone to two Final Fours in the past decade. Recruits want to play the best teams and in the biggest games on the biggest stage, and we’re still doing all that in the ACC, including against the bluest of blue bloods, Duke and Carolina, along with new bloods like Virginia and Fla State. This isn’t really the issue you make it out to be.

We had national buzz that reached as far as CA. Does anyone imagine that a CA 5 star would now consider us? our games against duke and the heels are meaningless to everyone except cause fans. They garner no National buzz. The chatter is key to attracting recruits. An Oats can make a difference but arguing that J B has lost it or sanctions misses the essence. Other teams have been sanctioned and quickly recovered. The acc was our best choice but that does not mean that it is a good fit.

The concept is exactly what started all the chaos

True but it has start sooner than later. JB shouldn’t be the coach next season.
