I think that this years squad has a couple things going for it that have them under the radar.
The first and most important is age and experience. It’s a complete 180 to now having a team full of juniors and seniors with some young talent mixed in. That variable has been key across the country in the portal era and that ultimately will help with all aspects of the game and on both ends. It also goes hand in hand with it being a mature team and no more constant drama and unproductive clowning around on/off the court.
The second is that there should be zero issues scoring for this team. They have to mesh but you can go inside/out, you have multiple guys who share the rock and multiple shooters and you have guys who can beat their man 1v1 when you need it. We lack a go to guy at the moment but there are candidates to be that guy.
The one piece missing is that we don’t have that additional true game changer at wing/guard yet, similar to the guys we are after in the 25 class. Chance at full strength and ability could be that guy but it’s more likely he is just a talented role player/utility guy this year. Maybe Maliq could have been that dude? Don’t know.
Thus to me this plays out as a team that gets the work and wins needed to make the tourney, is a fun team to get behind and starts the engine behind us really getting back to the top 20 or better and a contender status starting 25-26. The weakness will be the defense but overall the maturity and talent combination will be enough because it’s a proven model in the portal era to date. That and Red got year one out of the way and still managed 20 wins with a drama and injury plagued roster- then added a former head coach to his staff as well.
