In the interests of determining which Syracuse men's basketball player can lay claim to being the most unappreciated, or at least considered among the pantheon of unappreciated, I propose that we nominate Syracuse players that are completely and unabashedly unappreciated here.

Once nominations are gathered, we will invite the players to a Royal Rumble style wrestling match, with the last man standing earning the honor of most unappreciated, or we'll set up an online tournament with fan voting, whichever is easier.

To start off the nomination process, I nominate David Patrick.

David Patrick, hailing from Australia, was the backup point guard on the 1996 team that lost to an all-time great Kentucky team in the National Championship.

He is the all-time 3 point percentage leader in Syracuse history, making his only attempt.

His stats don't make any sense on David Patrick College Stats | College Basketball at Sports-Reference.com. Supposedly he played in 28 games and averaged 2.5 points per game... but only scored 24 points total in his career. It is a mathematical and statistical marvel.

He was an unselfish player, having tallied more assists (29) than points (24). He also made more free throws than total field goals.

Standing a monstrous 5-10, he is credited with zero blocked shots.

In short, David Patrick's individual and team accomplishments are incredible, and he is worthy of consideration as most unappreciated Orange.

He’s also Ben Simmons’ godfather.

Michael Gbinije.

Came to Syracuse and completely changed his game to become the guard Syracuse needed while players were leaving the program early left and right for the draft or as graduates after the golden age. He was absurdly consistent.

Paul Harris.

He got knocked because he made untimely bone-headed plays that stand out, and because the hype out of high school was absurdly high.

By Junior year, Harris played 30mpg and on a per40 basis averaged 16 and 10, with under 3 turnovers on 49% shooting. If he played in the last 5 years, pretty much a guarantee he would be playing full games.

People compared Oshae to Harris from an inability to finish standpoint and that comparison was a complete knock on Paul. Oshae was a "better" three point shooter, which doesn't mean much given Harris rarely shot them, but from everywhere else, was not close.

Billy Edelin and Jason Cipolla

I would respectfully argue that we overrate Cipolla. Loved that guy and his role, but looking back on his numbers, they were pretty bad, and he was slow and limited for a starting two (usually a dynamic position).

Craig Forth... Four-year-starter. Anchor of the 2003 NC team. Four-year academic All American. A school principal by his early 30s. Continues to be a credit to SU.

Craig got nothing but abuse while he played here ... including from people on this board. It was so painful to his parents, but Craig never complained. His brother posted here for awhile as SyraSax, but stopped when the abuse got out of control.

Most unappreciated by the fans: Billy Owens - not considered Boeheim's best ever player only because SU lost to Richmond, but that loss wasn't on Billy who put up an efficient 22 & 8 (more points than Melo had in any tournament game, except the one against Texas).

Most unappreciated by the school: Rudy Hackett - Averaged 22 & 13 on a final four team. Why isn't his number retired? Why?
