Melvin Tuten
Made the most of his very brief career with one monstrous dunk!
Honorable mention to McNabb and Graves for moonlighting on the court
I was mistaken. He never officially played. I remember his name because there was a situation where he would have been a replacement if some players were suspended, but it never came to fruitionGraves? When was that?
Pretty much everyone from the '70s, for that matter.
Most unappreciated by the fans: Billy Owens - not considered Boeheim's best ever player only because SU lost to Richmond, but that loss wasn't on Billy who put up an efficient 22 & 8 (more points than Melo had in any tournament game, except the one against Texas).
Most unappreciated by the school: Rudy Hackett - Averaged 22 & 13 on a final four team. Why isn't his number retired? Why?
Had that team won more than it should have the shot to beat Duke would have been that much greater.John Gillon’s probably a hero to us if he grew through the program, or wasn’t a part of a painfully underachieving squad
In terms of star players: Lawrence Moten.
Maybe because he came right after the glory years where we were loaded every year and lived in the top 10, and he left right before we went to the NC game, and obviously the way his career ended was a heartbreaker.
But we still had solid teams in that era and he was a heck of a player for 4 years. All time leading scorer says a lot.
I was thinking of Burgan as well. The guy is top 20 all time in scoring, rebounding, and steals.i'll have a (todd) cheese burgan deluxe with a side of shaky potatoes, please
Whoa, really?I was thinking of Burgan as well. The guy is top 20 all time in scoring, rebounding, and steals.
Yes! Somehow our leading scorer is underappreciated but it's true. His game probably doesn't translate as well to today's game since he wasn't a great 3 point shooter. But he made them when they counted. He just always seemed to move to the right place and be in great position. We would have been in trouble his freshman year if he didn't come out of nowhere.
Yup, I was a little surprised as well but according to Orangehoops.org:Whoa, really?
I really liked Burgan, but I wouldn't have guessed that at all.
Yup, I was a little surprised as well but according to Orangehoops.org:
Burgan is tied with Bouie for 20th in points (and only 4 points behind Brandon Triche).
Burgan is 20th in total rebounds and ahead of folks like Roberson, Rakeem, and Terrance Roberts.
He is 12th in steals, with an average of 1.5/game.
Burgan played less games than others due to limited PT his freshman year and a suspension his Jr. year. His numbers would be a bit better with an additional 10 or so games.
I think the disciplinary suspension hurt his reputation a bit.
I rewatched the 96 Final in quarantine. He was ballin hard for much of that game. He looked like a budding superstar. Never fully came to fruition but he was a very skilled player.i'll have a (todd) cheese burgan deluxe with a side of shaky potatoes, please
