That is the word I got from people who would know. The 5 years is actually more troubling. But that is pretty standard as well.

Standard for a guy that had zero leverage? Maybe they did give a five year deal but that’s insane if they did.

Cool question, but i'm not understanding why a new coach would 'lock out' these financial backers. Why wouldn't there be a simple continuity with their "access?" Unless Red himself brought a particular set of financiers into his camp. But, that seems unlikely. If they were remnants from JB and just carried over, isn't their interest in that access more important than who the HC is? And wouldn't they want access into a program that is actually good, rather than one that is just headed by someone familiar?

Dino viewed the team as his and felt he needed to cloister and protect the team from fans, the media, former players , etc. with closed practices, former player snubs, etc. (a really dumb approach.) Grandpa didn't want any other cooks in the kitchen.

Fran is the complete the opposite and views the team as a lynchpin of the community and a centerpoint for spanning connection and engagement with fans, alumni, and the entire generations of former players and sees that engagement as important and necessary. (a much better approach and what you want.)

I don't think any of that has anything at all to do with Red getting year 3. I mean nothing. There are two factors that I think are in play. Number one is money. I believe Red had a 5 year deal at 3 million a year. That would mean we owe him 9 million bucks. Plus, we would have to pay another coach. Two, I think the athletic dept wants to be fair to Red. He inherited a bunch of nitwits last year. And they didn't have a good system for the portal last year. Now, I worry that we are putting too many eggs in Kleins basket. But that is the way I see it right now.

Giving a 5 year contract to a coach with 0 experience or leverage is very concerning

As of almost a year ago, there were at least 41 HC's in college basketball who were making at least $3mm/yr.

So AA getting $3mm/yr or more is very plausible, and likely probable.

It's highly doubtful that Cuse is going to wrestle Nate Oats away when he's already making 4.5 million. You go down the list and look how well some of these coaches make compared to how average their results are. I have go all the way to Shaka Smart at 60 before I find someone who I feel deserves to be paid more.

Look at Mike Woodson and Kenny Payne and it's very easy to see why Red was offered what he was. And he's underpaid if you want to base it on how much money the Syracuse program brings in.

But none of that means anything if you can't win and/or put fannies in the seats. And, with the new NIL, inspire people to donate.

$3M per year would put him somewhere between 45-50th highest paid head coach in CBB. No inside info if that's the number, but there are 42 guys here making over 3. Yeah, I liked him at first and seemed like a nice guy (regardless of his gameday coaching challenges and recruiting shortcomings).

After the 10-win season and the USC job didn't open up for him, his demeanor changed for the worse and the results dropped and his weird "cloistering-off" of the team got really old and annoying, All the 3rd person "Grandpa" references got real cringey. Definitely an odd duck.

Do the assistants have multi-year deals or are they annual? Total staff at 3 million is a much easier swallow when we eventually cut bait.

According to SU's 990 form, JB made $2.85 million his last year. So, if for some bizarre reason they just rolled that over to AA, $3 million makes sense. You'll be able to find out when the next 990 is released (not sure when that will be).

That's my understanding as well, but not suggesting that Dash is wrong [he's usually spot on about these types of details].

What I'm more / most surprised about is that all five years would be fully guaranteed. A five year contract is standard. But it should have been qualified -- something like three years guaranteed, with a back-end two year option for the school.

Or a much lower buy out baked into the contract, given that he was unproven.

That would have seemed more appropriate for an unproven head coach. Red would get the up-front "time" he needs in a deal structured that way, the school would have it's quick out and be able to "fail fast" if Red flopped, and Red would have the opportunity to potentially get a better deal after year 3 if he proved that he had the chops.

Five years with a substantial buy out was a substantial mistake.

The school also needs to make it look like there's some stability. Donors aren't going to donate to a program with a revolving door at coach, and recruits want to know who they are going to be playing for, portal notwithstanding, all else being equal.
