ADJW on Dino: "He's going to be our coach in 2021"

Your kidding right. Anything less than 6 wins next year and he should be fired.

You read the article, right?
It's probably 3 years no matter how he does these next two.
With no fans at games, and historically not a lot of big donors, we couldn't afford the buy-out.

And even if your point is "should be", not what will be, even then, after the way this year has literally fallen apart to the worst we've ever been, you think this same group of players (more or less) MUST make a bowl next year? I just don't see it as realistic. You have to walk (again) before you can run.

Yeah agreed, I am not into the would coulda shoulda stuff like Coach Mac use to say about ifs/buts/candy/nuts. The records are the records. 10-3, only game we weren't in was ND. Give him huge credit for that and this year is on him as well regardless of circumstance. That said AD has to look at things a bit differently as well

Same for me. These things all even out at the end of the season and you are what you’re record says you are.

The only benefit I think to the woulda/coulda/shoulda is that it can potentially tell you whether your trajectory for the next year is looking more up or down. But otherwise 10 wins is 10 wins and 1 win is 1 win.

I mean it’s stupid to say he is.
How can he recruit that way.

He should have to go 6-6 or be fired but saying that publicly is stupid and Wildhack isn’t stupid.
Wildhack is also probably one of the few who actually knows what the athletic department's financial situation looks like...

Okay but why would he say anything other than what he did.

He can’t destroy recruiting for 2021.

He would be a moron to say Dino has to make a bowl or he is gone.

Even though he can tell Dino that privately.

Dino can’t have 5 losing seasons in 6 years and expect to remain coach.

I'm just posing a different theory as to why Wildhack said what he said, especially if it's true that Babers has a $17 million buyout for 2020. Very likely Cuse can't afford to fire him right now (or even next year).

He's not on the hot seat but he better get his shitt together...

He may not be on the hot seat but he has probably invested in a couple of these

If SU can’t afford to fire him after next year our athletic department is in huge trouble.
I get in a pandemic we can’t afford it.
Next year revenues should be up from this year and you can always negotiate a buyout with a fired coach. To pay over time.

It's not just a public PR stance or to help recruiting. My understanding from people I trust is that JW is still all in on DB. When people on here come out with these definitive proclamations that Dino must win X number of games next season "or else," even though that might seem like a reasonable assumption, I don't think it lines up with the way the decision makers are looking at this, not yet anyway.

Usually I would agree with this , these aren’t usual times.

I like Dino. I like him a lot.
It’s just you are what you are.
A bowl season isn’t a lot to ask.
Our schedule isn’t exactly loaded.

If we play the 4 nonconference games and 8 league games 6-6 should be expected.

Dude, I'm just offering alternative theories to what he's saying. Don't know why you're getting so worked up.

I agree, those are reasonable expectations. That's not the point. The point is that the decision on DB's status is not going to be solely predicated on X number of wins next season or fan expectations. Obstacles to success, no matter who the coach is, have been identified. Investments have been made and more significant investments are on the horizon.

I don't know where people are getting this $17M to $20M number from. It can't be close to that. From what info I've gathered it seems likely he's getting $4M a year and had 5 more years added starting in 2019. Since 2 years are gone, SU owes him $12M tops, but usually when you "buy out" a coaches contract for dismissal, you only pay around 60% of that give or take. I'm thinking if SU termites him next year, they will be on the hook for about $5-7M which may vary a bit depending on how late in the year it is.

I do understand $5-7M is still a lot of money that the SUAD won't part with easily, but nowhere near that $17M number.

If Dino wins less then 6 games next year he will be gone, just my opinion. No way a coach in the ACC has 5 losing seasons and keeps his job. We can all think what we want but I do not see anyway he does.Hopefully he wins 10.

Thamel from October 17.

Regardless of the board's opinion of Thamel, he's not pulling the number from thin air. Dino also signed the extension after the team went 10-3 and USC was a name being thrown out, so it's likely that Cuse set themselves up to cash in.
