After today I am feeling a lot better about this team and what we have. I’m not sure this season is going to exactly be great, but I think we have something for next season.

Tommy proved me wrong today, he made some shaky mistakes today but some of those easily could be put on the OL. I think he showed today why he is the starting QB and why he has been given the role as starter. I hope to see more of the tommy we saw today the rest of this season.

I think some of our offensive struggles were adjusting to the new system in the first two weeks.

I’m excited for what we have coming next season. I think there should be hope that things aren’t as bad as we all thought the first two weeks.

Have to like what you say, the defense is YOUNG and good, the Tucker kid is the bruising back we need and our receivers, O-Line and TD played a solid game.

Still room to improve on offense but you have to like what we saw today, it was a great way to “reopen” the Dome formerly known as Carrier

Not to mention we played two pretty good teams on the road to open the season. North Carolina is going to be damn good when we look back after the season, and Pitt just showed how good they are this week.
Liberty and Duke are there for the taking
BC going through growing pains
Wake and NC State?? Who knows
Louisville took an L to Pitt, but they'll be tough and favored

Well, they used TEs *twice* in the whole game (once for a 1 yard gain) and that is so rare that it's worth a comment from SWC in his write up. So, I think they still have quite a ways to go.

Tommy hitting a couple long bombs and a bushel of turnovers from the defense made up for the inability of the offense to string together complete drives.

Thank goodness for Tucker's emergence. Still, we had only 14 first downs. The other team ran 20 more plays than us. Not really the things to build on for the future.

It was a “team” win and a win is always good. The 5 TO’s were the difference in the game and a HUGE reason we won. We won’t get that many every game going forward so the Offense still needs to execute much much better. The box score doesn’t lie. That being said, it was a WIN this week and that is what matters the most,

They ran 20 more plays because they needed to. We had 2 or 3 scoring drives under 4-5 plays. Who needs complete drives when you score in 4 plays...

I give them credit for 3 times. The second was a bad throw by TD where benson was open. The third was a throw down the seam to Hackett where the DB grabbed him to avoid a long touchdown. That was a well designed play to a TE in the middle of the field. Double points for Gilbert! More of that please!

part of that is also that our defense couldn’t tackle their RBs. We had numerous opportunities to get them off the field on 3rd downs and we were just sliding off their guys, all of them. Really bad tackling form all day.

that saidthe game was exciting and that is definitely the best part of our first win

I agree. I know there is excitement after a win but the O was still problematic. I really like Tucker and the OL played better but some of the calls and TD decision making needs to improve. One example was team comes out of a time out. Everyone should be on the same page. It was third and short. TD throws deep and there was not a receiver within 30 yards of the throw. Still could not get on the same page after a time out.
There were multiple third downs and five or less where it was thrown deep or thrown away. If we cannot consistently move the ball and have to rely on long touch down passes and multiple take aways on D it’s going to be a long season.
Here’s hoping things get corrected in the bye week. Even with the offensive issues good to have a win.

Maybe some bad tackling, but give some credit: GT was good in the power running game. Their line got push, they opened running lanes. We are going to struggle against power running and need to get a fair share of turnovers to get stops. Fortunately, we got 5 vs GT.

This system is made to be aggressive and gives up some efficiency for explosiveness. Even in 2018, our best O under Dino, we’d have less 1st downs and less time of possession.

Quick hit bombs are a feature of this system and that mixed in with a bruising back who can grind out yards will be difficult to plan for.

Long drives are not the plan if this system is working properly. See Baylor from 10 years ago

GT definitely deserves credit, they bullied our DL at times and their backs ran through our arm tackles and made our guys miss.

That said that’s the biggest take away for me from the defense that needs to be improved this bye week. Get out there and practice wrap up tackling

And yet some people wonder why the defense gets tired ...

You need sustained drives, even with a hurry up offense.

You can count on one hand the number of tackles our team broke when running the ball. we seldom get extra yds. Thats adds up and GT had some almost every play. it feels like we are the slowest team on the field at every position most of the time.. But we swarm pretty well on D even if we dont wrap up.. the more you play and practice the better the D will take better angles.

we can win 5 more or lose all 7. Liberty is more athletic than we are. Duke who knows. we needed the Bye, maybe we get 2-3 kids back too.

I would argue that’s not necessarily true. what you absolutely cannot do is go 3 and out regularly. Averaging 2-3 first downs per drive, regardless of a score or not should absolutely be the goal, and it’s attainable. We simply cannot have games like the first two weeks.

GT is 2 years removed from running the ball 98% of the time. I’m not at all surprised they were successful at doing so. Clean up the tackling and we would’ve been fine yesterday. Hanna missed a few but his first game ever playing in when he definitely wasn’t expecting to see much time, let alone all the time. Liked what I saw out of him.

Liberty is not more athletic then we are gtfoh
have you watched them play at all? the QB transferred from Auburn? They were more athletic last time we played them too at the skill spots.. watching them yesterday run around the field and they way we tackle is not good.

we played a million kids on D, I dont think they were tired, they are just too small across the board and missed too many tackles.
So being “the slowest” (your comment above) and too small across the board is a serious problem, if true. Actually, we have good size in 3 DB spots when our first unit guys are healthy, and several of our guys have good speed for their positions.
Our defensive front 3 (except for Harper in the 2nd unit) gives up 25lbs to most o-lines. Our LBs are very talented, have good speed, but these guys are young, except for Richards. When those young LBs add muscle (Linton, Thompson, Cantin-Arku), watch out.

‘Teams tend to miss tackles when the offensive line opens lanes and good RBs get up speed.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Remember Georgia tech was projected to be in the last place in the ACC. They are not good. They beat Florida State who is simply atrocious. Yes TD made a few nice passes but still has a long long way to go. He continues to look uncomfortable when his first receiver is unavailable then make rushed and bad decisions, throwing the ball away unnecessarily and still not seeing the field appropriately. And still unbelievable that he could not get that one extra yard on the long run. That is an excusable. Keep in mind he only got sacked oncee so it is not like he was under unbelievable pressure all day. Tucker looked very good. Happy to see a running back finally able to see the hole. The 335 defense definitely won the game
. Without those turnovers the game would have been much closer. The truth of the matter is when you get that many turnovers they should have had this game iced and up by 35 points by mid 3rd quarter - But somehow almost let GT back in the game. This season is going to be a long haul. I don't think anything will be easy. Lastly very impressed with our many young DB's /LBs. Hope Cisco is ok and ready in 2 weeks.,
