I think we see QG play 20 minutes a game at the 6th man, he is really built for it. then next year when MD is gone he starts at the 4 and plays 32 a game
Possibly. But if you mix the sophomore leap I expect, it is hard to envision him not being in the starting lineup.

I'm wondering if we see a little bit of a shift this year compared to our rotation most years. In 2012, when he had a big slate of guys he trusted, Boeheim went 9 or 10 deep.

now, I'm not saying that this team is going to be anywhere near as good as 2012, when we went 30 and won in the regular season, but I could definitely see him using an expanded rotation, especially if he trusts guys to produce. if that happens, then it doesn't matter if Guerrier starts, he could play around that 20 minutes a game or maybe a little more, bench, stronger, wouldn't matter.

Agree. The difference this year (aside from Griffin if he's allowed to play and as good as advertised), is a much deeper bench. That's why the analogy to teams like 2012 is apt.

Boeheim doesn't do "bench"- it's gonna be another 6-8 man rotation. Rinse and repeat.

Oh ye of little faith! I (respectfully) disagree. In recent years we haven't many quality backups: forwards have not rebounded or scored well enough to play major minutes (QG being the recent exception); backup centers have not been physically ready; and backup guards have either been turnover machines or liabilities on offense or defense (or both). So you have to go back a ways (like RF did) to find examples. But if you do, there's clear evidence that bench guys who help us and don't get torched on defense will play.

Next year, if Griffin's eligible, I think he'll start and Bras will play. KR will likely be good enough to form a 3 guard rotation. Center's being sorted out, with more depth possibly on the way (which could be huge). And PF has a senior starter, a quality backup and a freshman with potential. Some uncertainty but also lots to be excited about.

Fair enough. But my faith, little or otherwise, was forever ruined this past season watching Buddy and JG3 playing 38 mins a game. Just by accident that was a ridiculous set of circumstances. No rhyme or reason to the substitution pattern, differing standards for some players vs others, and a total lack of development priority for guys who struggle early but could, w/ adequate PT, get better later in the year.
Obviously I'm not a HOF'er & my POV doesn't mean much in the big picture, and though a big fan of JB's, on this subject I have become skeptical.
I hope to be proven wrong, but IMO, he will revert to form and use 6-8 players MAX...like he's always done for the most part.

Sid
Marek
Griff
Buddy
Joe
Quincy
Kadary
Unnamed center
You don’t think Woody is getting any run? Not so sure about that... at least too early to tell

Marek/Quincy are both good players but how often were they on the court together as forwards? If they were both in together it was usually because Sidibe was out and we were playing small.

There’s not enough outside shooting/perimeter ability in the game, if they’re both in there along with Sidibe. IMO.
if their games next season look like the past one i will agree. but marek does have a good perimeter game, at least out to about 17 feet and maybe more. he showed signs of being a capable 3 pt shooter as a soph but lost his shooting touch last year after breaking his hand. let's see if he gets it back with a healthy off season. and quincy came in with a reputation of beinga decent 3 pt shooter. he wouldn't be the first forward to have a dismal freshman year from the line only to show significant improvement.

Kris Jo never shot a high percentage from 3, he was more of a slasher, C.J. had one good year from 3 his game was from the mid-range, Jerami Grant left without developing a 3pt shot. There were all pretty good with C.J playing major minutes with both of them, during our most successful sketch in school history.

Positionless basketball does not exist in college basketball small ball does, but guy how can play that way at the 4 & 5 are one and done (a couple of guys a year if that) if they go to college at all.

You want to play small fine don't play 2-3 zone the two don't mix well.

Who's minutes is he taking?
Whoever the coach wants to sub out? There’s availability circumstances, injuries, game situations, etc. I’m not saying he’s grabbing 20 minutes, but I believe he’ll get run...

I last updated this after the 2016-17 season:

USE OF BENCH: Here are the number of players who averaged 10 minutes played per game, (of the games they were available), and the team’s record in each year:
(the Media Guide has stats only from 1980-81)
80-81 9 (22-12); 81-82 8 (16-13); 82-83 9 (21-10); 83-84 7 (23-9); 84-85 7 (22-9); 85-86 10 (26-6); 86-87 7 (31-7); 87-88 8 (26-9); 88-89 8 (30-8); 89-90 8 (26-7); 90-91 8 (26-6); 91-92 8 (22-10); 92-93 7 (20-9); 93-94 7 (23-7); 94-95 8 (20-10); 95-96 7 (29-9); 96-97 9 (19-13); 97-98 6 (26-9); 98-99 10 (21-12); 99-00 8 (26-6); 00-01 7 (25-9); 01-02 8 (23-13); 02-03 8 (30-5); 03-04 8 (23-8); 04-05 9 (27-7); 05-06 7 (23-12) 06-07 8 (24-11); 07-08 8 -before Devo got injured- But I think Ongenaet and Jardine might have averaged 10 minutes anyway (21-14), 08-09 8 (28-10), 09-10 7 (30-5). 10-11 8 (27-8), 11-12 9 (34-3); 12-13 9 (30-10); 13-14 8 (28-6); 14-15 8 (18-13); 15-16 7 (23-14) 16-17 9 (19-15) (Includes Chukwu and Coleman who didn't play much of the season due to injury but averaged 10 minutes in the games they played)

Let’s look at this in a different form. These are the number of players who averaged 10 or more minutes and the team records, without regard to which year was involved:

10 players- 26-6, 21-12 Average: 24-9 Winning percentage: .723

9 players- 22-12, 21-10, 19-13, 27-7, 34-3, 19-15 Average: 24-10. Winning percentage: .703

8 players- 16-13, 26-9, 30-8, 26-7, 26-6, 22-10, 20-10, 26-6, 23-13, 30-5, 23-8, 24-11, 21-14, 28-10, 27-8, 28-6, 18-13 Average: 24-9. Winning percentage: .725

7 players- 23-9, 22-9, 31-7, 20-9, 23-7, 29-9, 25-9, 23-12, 30-5, 23-14 Average: 25-9. Winning Percentage: .735

6 players- 26-9 Winning percentage: .743

Jim Boeheim has no “rule” about playing only 7 players. He averages 8. Most coaches do. Like most coaches, Jim plays everyone early and then goes with the guys who have shown him they can be relied upon to perform well in close games, whatever number of players that is. Generally, the fewer guys who get serious minutes, the better the record has been. When he uses a lot of players, he’s not trying to wear teams down or develop players for the future. He’s searching for answers.

(In 2017-18, 9 players played 10+ minutes per game, which included Geno Thorpe who played 48 minutes in 6 games before leaving. We went 23-14. In 2019 9 players played 10+ minutes per game. We went 20-14. In 2020 7 players played 10+ minutes per game but that includes Jalen Carey who played 23 minutes in 2 games. We went 18-14.)
