Speaking of statistics. Hughes went 11 straight games ( not including NC State) where he shot 33 pct or worse from the 3 pt line. Overall he was 15-73 in that span. We went 5-7 in that span including the game he was injured.

I also liked Hughes a lot and he did some very nice things but that stretch of play was brutal. He only shot 40 pct combined during that stretch overall as well.

Overall he really struggled for an extended stretch from the outside. His shot selection regressed as well. There is no doubt he is a big loss but I find myself even over rating him a bit despite being one of his biggest fans all year. He was good for us no doubt but I'm not sure that the delta between he and Alan is quite as large as some think.

Unfortunately, most players aren't consistent in the way we want them to be. The ones that are close usually only play college ball for one year.

Especially in college. I love stats as much as the next guy but predicting next year we'll be top 15 after losing our best player while probably being worse at defense seems incredibly dumb.

Can’t disagree with the first half, but I’m not sure how you come up with the 2nd. Hughes vs Griffin is a coin toss on defense. Assuming we have an improved backup at center I could see us being improved on defense as a team.

Even if Griffin is a better defender playing man defense and rebound better out of a man defense, it is a guess, but an educated guess that Hughes would be a better defender playing the defense we play. It takes time to pick it up, we have guys for years who dont get it until 2 or 3 years in.

Again just my opinion and I don't think its unfair, I see it as a push at best.

That’s fair.

There is no doubt about that. With that said though, if we are going to be honest and argue for Hughes as ACC POY you have to take a look at these things. He was the top scorer but not so much in other areas. Consistency/efficiency really wasnt who he was his first year here either.

When you look at Griffin I think that efficiency may make him an upgrade in terms of how he gels and fits with the team. As an individual talent it's hard to really make that assessment until he gets out there.

We have to be more efficient if we want to be better. That is on both ends. If the defense only marginally improves then add that much more pressure to the offense.

I think you would get far less blowback if you expressed your opinions like you did above rather than stuff like:
Anybody that believe this guy is an upgrade over Hughes and that we're a top 15 team needs to be checked into a mental facility.

Does anybody know if Griffin/the coaching staff thinks he’s going to be immediately eligible? I’ve read that other coaches and players are under the impression they’ll be good to go next hear but I was wondering if anyone here knew what our guys felt

yep.

the team was really close to having a way better record last season, imo. so many close games ( i think 6 losses under 5 points) that were losses...If Hughes played up to the level in the other games that he did in that 12 game stretch...different outcome.

a young team that REALLY wasn't ready for the first 15 or so games...and at the end of the season PUMMELED UNC in an elimination game.

another reason for optimism: this team was 6-0 vs teams it lost to in the first game of a 2 game series...thats a huge sign that these players know how to LEARN from experience and use that to be better...I think we will see a better team next year.

I'm always super optimistic every off-sesason...but I'd be shocked if this isn't an easy 20+ win team that's comfortably in the NCAA this year (assuming there is a year).

the name of the game is continuity...and this team has it for sure...

griffin looks to be a better 3 point shooter than Hughes...and im guessing some of the other players will improve...sidibe and guerrier made big strides from the beginning of the year to the end.

next year the team will have late-season guerrier and sidibe (doube digit rebpunds last 6 games of the year) to START the season...plus all the additions...

yeah losing highes sucks...but i think the net outcome of returnees and incoming players..will be a much better team win-loss wise...

as good as hughes was he was top scorer in 15 of 32 games...was a balanced offensive attack...and should stay that way with many players capable of scoring.

only concern is defense...which should be figured out, imo...

How do you know that you didn't watch him play and the consensus from people who did watch him play was the reason he didnt get more pt last year was because of his defense

And then if you consider defensive rebounding as part of defense, which I do
In what contrarian dictionary has defense not included rebounding? You’re playing defense until you get possession of the ball. Or is it considered special teams when a shot goes up?

That’s why recruiting is more important than ever. We can’t be content waiting 3 years for elite talent that may never show up. We need to consistently attract very good talent like we used to just 6 years ago. People are losing their minds acting like this drought is normal and should be acceptable.

That’s part of his charm though.
I thought it was cute. Something like that—not really a direct address or insult—not sure why it would be taken so seriously. Isn't it obviously 'over the top?'

Perfect. Maybe the admins could add "Charm Type" under some avatars.
That's awesome. That bit, and when he was being intentionally 'concise' with his language... Gold. Gold!

I said I consider it part of playing defense. I think we are in agreement.
