Alex Bayer: New Special Teams Coordinator

There is a lot about his time at valpo and first year at BG but not much the last two years.

"Bayer guided the special teams unit to numerous accomplishments in the fall of 2021, including leading the nation in blocked kicks with nine, the second-most in program history and most since 1991. Valpo was the only team in all of Division-I college football (both FCS and FBS) to block nine kicks during the season. During a game at San Diego, Valpo tied a PFL record for blocked kicks in a single game with three."

This thread gives me a headache.

Here is how Bowling Green did in special teams related statistical categories for 2025:

Blocked kicks: 11th

They had 3, which tied them for 11th in the country

Blocked kicks allowed: 87th

They allowed 2, which tied them for 87th

Blocked punts: 5th

They had 3. 5th out of 132 is good.

Blocked punts allowed: 1st

They did not allow a blocked punt. 80 teams did this. Thru tied for first.

Kickoff return defense: 48th

Kickoff returns: 25th

Net punting: 75th

Punt return defense: 106th

Punt returns: 118th

So bad returning punts and defending punt returns but good on pretty much everything else. His background is solid.

Just read his Bio. looks good on paper, Interesting how Bayer and Kehres are both from Ohio and coached in the MAC. conference, when BG. plays Toledo it is known as the I-75 rivalry I'm sure both these coaches know each other well and maybe Kehres put in the good word. With having both of these guys on our staff maybe we will recruit Ohio more.

Seems like a good hire and a former Broyles award nominee. I think we could have done a lot worse.

I really love the moves Fran made on the staff and one major one no one is talking about is Gattis coaching WR’s full time.

And that switch was made before the season ended, right?
