I can tell you that is not the case with many of the alums I have spoken with. It is true you can’t hook everyone up but you’re also making an assumption that the alums want something or are looking for a handout. The ones I’ve talked to are just really passionate about the university and program, they are into HS coaching or are active in the their community. This may sound bad but you can't hook up every former player every time. My guess some former players are trying to find an "in" to coaching or something and I would guess there are a number of times coaches have to say no.
A good example is bringing out an SU coach to a community camp for freshmen/sophomores in places like Baltimore, Philly, Chicago, NJ or offering to help out with the few camps that SU does run in a volunteer capacity. Making connections with donors and other coaches in our historic recruiting strongholds. A big one that has been rebuffed has been fitness and offseason training with both current and former pros.
