Angeli has arrived

Two well-regarded, power program guys is probably the best case scenario for us. Landing a guy like McCord was a generational occurrence.

All we need is one of them to be good enough.
It’s like I know that things worked out for Ohio State in the end winning the Natty. But my gosh that was crazy that they just allowed their 11-1 QB with that loss coming on the last drive in Ann Arbor just walk away. Like they should see how close they were to not even making the Natty run with Howard, a Nebraska at home loss away from being in the Citrus bowl and realize they should probably not do that again if a similar circumstance happens again.

If McCord had the 12 team playoff in 2023, they get in. If Howard had the 4 team playoff as McCord did, there is no natty in Columbus

I don't think its very likely Tennessee has to prepare for both. I'm pretty sure Fran will settle on a starting QB and announce it much sooner than right before the Tennessee game kicks off. Seems like he sees a lot more value in having everyone know where the QB room stands than in the slight one game advantage of an opponent not knowing our starter.
Even Coach P was cagey about starting Donovan McNabb. You can let the team know before you announce it. Pretty good test of DART... can they keep it secret?

Tennessee game is most important game of the season. An upset puts us back on the map in a way none of us have really seen since McNabb. The next most important game is UConn... avoiding the upset. From there... the next most important games are the ACC home games. Then.. Georgia Tech. If we can beat Tennessee and Georgia Tech... and cover at home... we might find ourselves a ranked 8-4 team at the end of the year, with a ton of momentum heading into 2026.

Good guy. Well thought of by everyone at ND.

Good quarterback with a quick release and very accurate with his throws.

He handles the offense well and makes good reads.

His drawback is that he is not very mobile and prone to sacks.

I would have been happy with Angeli as ND's starting QB this year, but Freeman went with CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey.

He will be a very good QB for Syracuse this year.
Random comment, but do ND fans realize how much more likable their program is with Freeman now in charge vs Kelly. Actually very fitting the QB competition we will have is a former backup QB from Notre Dame and a former backup QB from LSU.

My the best player win.

And for the record, the other doesn't have to be a "loser" in the competition. I could envision a scenario where Angeli is the guy this year, and then a more experienced Collins steps right in for the next two years -- and our QB room is strong throughout because of it.

I feel like you have said this several times before. Angeli has two more years of eligibility. If he wins the job, are you thinking he moves on to the NFL or possibly to another team in 2026? Both things seem unlikely to me. A QB leaving for the NFL after one season of starting experience in college that still has another year of eligibility seems improbable.

I have heard mixed information about Angeli's eligibility. I'm counting on one, would be great to be pleasantly surprised by him being able to potentially stabilize the position for longer.

If he has two [and wins the job], then I wouldn't expect Collins to stick around.

Collins will be the starter and never relinquish.

He only has game log info on ESPN for 2023 and 2024 (both more than 4 games).

I don't see how he wouldn't have two left.

It's pretty much a non factor either way. Tennessee will be ready regardless of who we have at QB. Rumor has it they play in decent league and have some experience game planning and making in game adjustments even if the unlikely event they are caught off guard.

Strongest one ever, says Syracusefan.com posters every year since the beginning of time.
When is the last time we had a QB room with two transfer P4 QBs? You aren't allow to say last year, the year before that, the year before that or the year before that. Imagine what they would say if we had two SEC QBs on the roster at one time.

Interesting. He was in the 2022 class. Per Notre Dame participation, in 2022 it appears he only played in 2 games handing the ball off. He played seasons in 2023 and 2024. I don't see how he doesn't have both the 2025 and 2026 seasons yet if he wants them both.

I am sure they can adjust. But the period between it happening and the adjustment is the cool part.

I mean, we still keep play calling as secret as possible, right? Why give an advantage unnecessarily? I do not mind if we say QB will be X and then start Y.

Let Steve and Rickie compete - throw all summer get receivers used to both throwing styles, get close to one or the other QB's. We need to develop that relationship we had with Kyle/Gadsden/Meeks/Gill/
with the receivers that stayed, and RB's see who is best. I did it in Prep School, threw all summer and it felt so natural come football season. A trust is developed between you and your target they know what you want need and how to create space for you. It works!

Thanks.

So... redshirted in 2022.

Played a bit in 2023.

Played a bit more in 2024 [last season].

Two remaining to play two.

I'm just happy that regardless of who the starter is, Angeli or Collins, we should have a very capable backup ready to go in case of injury.

Whenever Dungey had his annual injury, or Garrett got knocked out, it always felt like we suddenly became a Pop Warner Team.

Well said. Not just injuries either.

Say somebody has a bad half. It happens. We can come out of the locker room with a fresh QB that the defense has to adjust to. That's the kind of stuff that gets teams back into games.

My grandfather was a professor at OSU so ive had a life of watching a lot of buckeye football. I said Kyle was better than Mccarthy in 2023 and think he was better than Howard in 2024. I stand by both statements in 2025.

Yea ok mhmhm, we have had a walkon from Dupage college, an unrecruited freshman, a WR from Miss st and a badly coached qb as our last 4 starters besides Kyle. I did love them all but...
2 big P4 transfers and 3 really good recruits have not been in that room ever here.
No way Mahoney ever plays here if we had Michael Johnson JR and the coachs son took off so he could play.

Wow, absolutely. The Freeman Effect has been well and truly noticed.

You won't find a single ND fan who misses Brian Kelly or would take him over Freeman.

I think LSU fans are kind of fighting the same issues with Kelly right now. He better at least get them in the playoff very soon or they will be moving on. Juice has to be worth the squeeze with him because he is not a very likeable person to say the least. In addition, down there he is such a fish out of water it's absurd, they knew this would be an issue but figured big winning would cure all but most LSU people are getting tired of him and quite frankly do not like him. They really need to find the right guy down there

That Marcus Freeman won 9 games in 2022 as a first time ever (any level) head coach and with Drew Pyne as his starting QB is truly remarkable.

Steve Angeli indeed does have two years of eligibility remaining.

From The Observer, ND's student newspaper, from when Angeli announced he was transferring:

"As for Angeli, it remains unclear where he will transfer. He held offers from Arizona, Boston College, Rutgers and 19 others coming out of high school. Another possible option could be Tennessee after their star quarterback Nico Iamaleava unexpectedly left the program. Angeli has two years of eligibility remaining."
