Anyone concerned about all the JUCOs?

We need tackles with D1 size/strength that can compete immediately due to injury and probable early defection from Pugh to the NFL. I have expected us to look@ the JUCO route here.

Same can probably be said about an MLB with the size/strength needed to contribute day 1.

I don't think you can discount how last year's finish impacted this recruiting class either. Having won the Pinstripe Bowl in 2010, and going from 4-8 to 8-5, I think they were aiming for a higher star level of recruits. Looking ahead to a smaller class, and the improving record, they probably could have filled it with the same level talent they'd been getting, but aimed higher. Then they gagged away a 5-2 start, and probably lost plenty of interested kids, then had to work to get back in with others. Go through this year, with big improvements, but it's probably hard to get back in with kids you might've passed over once, so you need to go looking where you can to fill up. There's no problem with JC kids; I think when VaTech started their climb, they used lots of them, then got to where they were an upper level program, and could become more choosy. I'm hoping SU can get to that point again.

And it probably does matter that the records went 4-8, 8-5, 5-7, now 7-5 with a bowl pending instead of 4-8, 5-7, 8-5, 7-5 (plus bowl). You could sell a kid on one down year after a bowl if it hadn't been preceded by the Grob era.

We need depth, or a starter, at MLB immediately.

I infer that the staff is concerned about the health and development of the WR's we haven't seen yet.

I think we aimed high this year and (at this point) just plain struck out on a bunch of our A+ list prospects. It also seems like we didn't get past maybe the first cut with them, which tells me we still have a lot of work to do repairing the brand and making the place more physically attractive.

We lost a big opportunity this year. Win 2 more games that we should have won and we're top 25, headed to a BCS bowl. As it is, we're still behind the 8-ball. The HS guys we're getting in general need a couple years of S&C and development to be ready to play. If we need immediate help, it has to be JUCO/

Regardless of everything else, I have no problem with JUCO's. Bringing in fresh competition and guys who are physically (more or less) ready to go is fine by me.

* As a former JUCO player that went Div 1, I may be a little biased.*

Look at it this way, when you recruit out of high school you are looking for potential.
When you go JUCO, you recruit to play now.
Most JUCO guys are brought in to fill an immediate need, mostly due to injury, transfer or busts.
Most JUCO's come in with 3 years to play 2 and have enough transferrable credit hours to avoid any future eligibilty problems.
There is almost never: homesickness, attitude, grade, effort or game study problems.
If a coach brings in a dud high schooler, they could potentially hog a scholly for 5 years.
The JUCO comes and goes in 2... dud, injury or star.

Just my opinion...some coaches absolutely refuse to bring in JUCO guys.

I have no problem with bringing in a few JUCOs if they can contribute. Having said that, i am concerned with how many we have offered and how late we seem to be offering.

Not a concern at all If they, the JUCOs come in and we win the "regular" high school kids will come . Success breeds success.

JUCO's are helping us, but is only is a short term fix. We need to continue improving the "brand" and hope that we start recruiting some of the potential studs out there. If we start bagging 4/5 star recruits early in the recruiting year, it will pay dividends for others to look at us and committ as well. If we continue slow out of the gate, and then pretty much dead for the entire summer and football season, you have no choice but to fill the roster. I thought with SU's good performance and high exposure on TV would have beneifited us by this point. Still, we should see something happen this weekend, and I do hope that EO's presence will not be a negative to other recruits this weekend, if he still comes, which since its paid for by SU, I am sure he will to see his friends. Last thing we need is some guys reopening there recruiting, and you all know who I am talking about.

Bill Snyder has made his living on JUCO kids. I'm ok with it as long as they are able to come in and contribute right away. The pros to bring in JUCOs is that they are more likely to be physically ready, and they could possibly see the field earlier, especially since so many enroll in January. The cons are basically that we only have them for a couple of years.

The kids are typically more physically mature as well as older. Some have 2 years in the weight room over the hs kids.

JUCO's will allow us to fill gaps and allow us to continue to redshirt a good number of players. Absolutely essential for the success of our program.

Who are all these players being redshirted? They're bringing in juco lineman, linebackers and safeties and there are no high school equivalents committed.

These are all gap fillers but if they have 2 or 3 years eligibility it provides flexibility to bring in players that will need a year to develop.

We're obviously short on lbs with size but only have two safeties while redshirting two others and are currently redshirting 3 o-linemen.

Snyder from Kansas state has a team full of jucos. We don't have the depth to be putting it all on high school kids, I actually prefer a few juco every year. Never heard of goggins having issues with grades etc. This is the best way to get good fast, you can't totally rebuild a program in just 4 years.

Palmer.

Doesn't bother me much. I just want to win.

No kidding. Marrone has done a commendable job of replenishing the roster / depth, but we aren't quite where we need to be yet. I like that the coaching staff is focused on both the long term--building through HS recruiting--while simultaneously helping fill short term need via JUCOs.

IMO, it is still going to take another 3-4 years until the roster is fully replenished and balanced--not just from a numbers perspective of having a "full" roster.

Maybe you can add some context to what you are saying (replenished and balanced).

If we land a few more jucos in this December-January push (two LBs, strong safeties, and an OT), this roster will be in good shape in numbers, and balance among positions. The issues are quality (landing an occasional 4 star or two), and improving our appeal to HS prospects in the summer round of recruiting. What we are doing now (lots of juco offers, our prospects still visiting others & not deciding until January) is a high wire act.

I don't mind the gap fillers at all but I do admit concern by the number of high school kids that aren't saying yes to Doug and his staff yet. If we are going afterJC kids, lets get Walker and Paige as well.

Recruiting JUCOs this time of year isn't a big deal. Losing them might be though.

I'd say balanced in having the optimum number of kids at each position. 15 o-line and more than 3 safeties or 5 linebackers. Things like that. The roster is still way out of whack.

You need to start living in reality. We might get one or two 4 stars a year.

I agree with this with one very important exception...if a player commits to SU early in the process, very rarely will that player attain 4-star (or higher) status from the gurus. I'm convinced that their system is more about offers than it is about actual player evaluation.

The bottom line is...I trust this staff's ability to find and evaluate talent.
