Are we really this bad?

Talk to me after we are 3-9, and again the laughing stock of D1 football. Then tell me how we get out of another debacle for our football program, which is struggling to get attendance already, and next year will not draw flies.
I will again state that if this edition can win one more game I will never mention coaching again. I frankly pray that they do, because as I have said before the alternative is extremely unattractive.
However if they go 3-9, tell me again how this does not resemble Gerg.

LOL...you mention a record 3-9 to illustrate the comparison between SS and Gerg and then don't let a better record stand as proof that SS is a better coach and has a better team.

You realize how ridiculous that is right?

Then you mention the state of the program. What is your measurement of that other than the team's current record? Please tell.

What about Shafer's tenure is worse than when Gerg was here? I really can't think of One thing.

Here is how I account for it:
Recruiting - Light years better than Gerg
Play on the Field - Light years better than Gerg (BOTH Offense and Defense)
Play calling - Better than Gerg regardless of McD or Lester
Attendance - Better
Size of the players - Better
Players attitudes - Better
Respect of the Program - Better
RECORD - WAY Better (More wins in 1 year than Gerg had in 4)
And so on...

We are having a bad year with injuries. Record doesn't tell the whole story.

We aren't good, that is for sure

I'm not sure we're as bad as our record indicates either. Our offense is bad, but our D is in the top 3rd in the country. Should be worth a few more wins.

I'd put us at .500 based on stats. Stupid MD game.

Don't have to., They are right over the plate.
In your dreams. We will see who is right by end of season, and I honestly hope you are and I am totally off base, but I do not think I am.
You have one opinion, I have another time will tell.

I don't know what will be decided by the end of the season. My position is that you've got to give the coaching staff a pass when they had to face a schedule like this with so many injuries. (And that he isn't G-Rob.) You don't make a decision on them for at least another year, (we gave G-Rob four years). I don't know whether Shafer's term here will be a success or not. I may come to the conclusion that he has to go. I just won't come to that conclusion this year.

I fear this program may not have a lot of time left to improve, the attendance is falling further and further every year. We need to improve ASAP, I do not think Shafer should be fired yet either, but he must make improvements quickly, especially on the offensive end or this program will become an afterthought nationally, and for that matter locally.

Funny you didn't respond to my post.

You stating other than the teams current record made everything else not worth commenting on.

I make my conclusions from the play I see on the field, not your arbitrary cherry picking of things that may be better, because in the end results are all that matter. I do not see those results, and I am not talking only about wins vs loses.

You do not agree and that is okay by me, but this program can not afford more ineffectual coaching, and that includes organizational skills, choosing the correct assts., and a myriad of small things that apparently you do not observe.

The injuries you keep saying are an excuse for this performance account for maybe two loses. What do you attribute the Villanova, Maryland, and other early games to, we were pretty healthy for the majority of the season. No I will stick to my opinion that the overall performance of this staff has not been great, but thanks for your input.

End results are not all that matters. They are the main factor in retaining a coach - but not the only measure. What our staff did last season counts. The recruiting class counts (Ish, Phillips, Long, Franklin).

We've been in every game this season, except maybe FSU (a playoff team who we lost to by 53 last season). How you play matters. We haven't been perfect, but we sure haven't been as bad as you make them out to be. Our stats point to 2-3 more wins than we have. Part of that's on the staff and the players - and parts are injuries, no bye weeks, etc.

its not just us who punt from inside the 40 most teams do that on 4th down
Well... a lot of coaches are morons when it comes to punting.

How dare we question coaches about football - valid

How dare coaches question David romer about math - invalid

The willingness to adapt to what data shows decreases as the likelihood that coaches suffered head injuries in their playing days. Basketball baseball - adapt quickly. Hockey - very slowly. Football - very very very slowly

I said exactly the opposite, I stated very clearly "Record Does not tell the whole story".

You must be some kind of expert in grading "Play on the Field" because I see a team on the field that is WAY better than any team that Gerg ever put on the field. They just aren't winning games and having 16 players not on the field injured is a reason, not an excuse. If someone catches the Flu and can't go to work, is that a reason he can't go or an excuse. If you break a leg and can't run, is that a reason for not running or an excuse?

Do you have a coaching background? Are you a former NFL player or scout? Have you ever been a head coach? Are you a former player ? That you are qualified to judge based on this "myriad of little things" that we dummies clearly can't see.

Thanks for your input as well. Next time I want a myriad of little things nobody else sees judged, I will look you up.

Keep your Orange blinders firmly in place because that is all you have.

the attendance avg is higher than last year I believe averaging over 40k

Unless you are a top 2 program in a major conference, the talent issue is moot. Most programs have comparable talent, but where it counts is the key skill positions, qb, rb, wr, lb.

If AJ is a soph or jr right now, we have 5 or 6 wins already.

You really can't see past the record. It's remarkable, really.

A reasoned response is: we only have 3 wins despite our top 30 defense because our offense hasn't scored points in the red zone (despite moving the ball between the 30's), had critical mistakes and bad play calling at bad times. There have been bright spots like the play of 3-4 freshman, Cam Lynch, Hickey, West and Reddish. Injuries have played a part in the last couple of games - though not the only reason - it's undeniable that we don't have the depth to overcome it. It's also worthy to note that we've played some of the top defenses in the country and haven't had a bye week in nine games. Shafer has them playing very hard, despite the grind and record - which is really impressive. The kids have shone a resiliency that is a reflection of both their character and the jobs the coaches have done to develop relationships. Sadly, at the end of the season - we will have too many losses, too many self-inflicted wounds, and too many outside issues to overcome.

Thank you and goodnight.

I think tye major thing that makes me proud this year to be a Syracuse fan is the character this team has shown. They could have very easily packed it in when hunt went down. The defense could have rolled over because the offense hasn't been producing. It goes on and on but in the end we have a team still fighting to get bowl eligible. There is no quit in this team and they are fighting for their lives. This alone shows they are buying into what shafer is saying and that gives me hope for the future. I agree this year is a disappointment but there are a lot of positives that have come from it. Freshman playing big minutes and contributing defense that was one missed tackle away from getting Clemson in Death Valley. So proud of this team on and off the field.

I am looking forward from here. Our attendance was up this year based on last year and the expected promise of future improvement. Unfortunately that is all gone now, we go 3-9 and attendance goes back into the toilet.

Keep looking at the "myriad of little things".
So more of those things today, but you keep those blinders firmly affixed. You are a true fan(atic).

How you feeling today after a truly bizarre coaching performance?
