Arizona fires Kevin Sumlin / hires Jedd Fisch

Did Sumlin go right from T A&M to Arizona? I think he did, probably should have taken a year and regrouped. Did some self scouting so to speak. Rich Rod wasn't that bad at Arizona. it really came off the rails there. Herm and ASU have a ton of momentum as well which hasn't helped. Herm is looking like a great hire that almost everyone hated at the time. ( Of course a random poster here will say how much they loved it!!)

Yep. Zona was thinking of hiring the Navy HC but their QB threw a fit and they hired Sumlin. Or at least that is how the story goes. Kinda like Ash here before Dino was hired.

still no cure, c’mon play along
Well you obviously accepted my diagnosis so I appreciate that at least, if I was going to hire a coach I would start with trying to get a coach like Malzhan, probably wouldn’t come here but he might still want to coach, if not somebody like that I would try Lance leipold or another successful fcs coach.

No - I didn't take your bait. You know I disagree on the finer points.

The truth is there's nothing gained calling for his head this year. He's clearly got a lot to prove next season, asterisks and all coming off of this year. So be it. I happen to think he'll bounce back next year and we'll see enough to build into 2022. If not, we'll be in a better spot to hire a new HC and start over.

Honestly it doesn’t matter does it, we will find out who is right and who was wrong. If Dino goes out and wins 6+ games I will gladly eat crow and say I was wrong, if he wins 4 hopefully that would be enough for the Dino supporters to see 5 losing in 6 seasons would be unacceptable. I don’t hate Dino Babers, I just think this far he has proven to be a failure here at Syracuse.

Was reading on Lewis, I think he spends one more year at Kent St and then moves on. I think Leopold moves on this year

I'm sure by now they know that one losing season sinks them into MAC-4-Life.

So if there are particular talents on their team that will graduate, and the backups might need more than a year to get to the same level, they need to jump at whatever opportunity presents itself.

Dino was on every pundit's possible replacement lists after 2018. Now he's nowhere to be found. Popularity disappears quickly in this industry.

No excuses man, no excuses

Popularity disappears when you go 6-17 in the 2 years proceeding. Moreover, looking quite inept in the process. And, it's not just "this" industry, many businesses where folks are paid so handsomely, they better produce and get the results required, or else they're almost certain to be out the door.

Yeah, my point is that it's not clear at all he has proven he's been a failure here at Syracuse. If you go blindly by W-L record it points in your direction - but even then a 10 win season is hard to explain given the last 2 decades of Syracuse Football.

The cure isn't clear either. The trend line is pretty straight forward for our football program - there are things that we can't change due to demographics and our reality as a private school in the NE. There are things we can change and get better at that are within our control. I think AD Wildhack is aware of those things and views the job our HC is doing through that prism. When it's clear that Dino is a drag on where he thinks the program is AND it's financially smart to cut bait he will.

I should add that the fans who thought you were the perfect hire turn on you quickly and focus on the next shiny object. I should know, I was that guy once. Well, at least once.

In many ways, it's a metaphor for this country.

very true, and in 4 years people will be calling for the next guys head. I just can't get myself to do it anymore. fire this coach and then scour the internet looking for the next great coach who will turn it around!!!

LEOPOLD IS THE GUY!!! HE DISCIPLINED!!! KNOWS NY RECRUITING!!! COACHES HIS GUYS UP!!!
Blah, Blah, Blah.

Ill support whoever is the coach for as long as he is here, just the way I am going to look at it at this point. Certainly not going to waste a minute of my time playing fantasy AD and talking about possible replacements when we will still have a coach under contract. I also think Dino can still coach. Call

I have never understood why Arizona is not a powerhouse. Great weather. Pretty coeds. Nice campus. Tuscon is a cool city. Would assume they could get players from California, Texas, and other west coast areas. Cold weather kids might even jump to the desert. They got Gronkowksi from western New York :).

Probably the same reason that Oregon became a powerhouse. A school needs to bring in the right coach, and pair him with an administration and boosters that are willing to go all-in. Obviously, that's not easy, or else other schools who have all the potential in the world would be Oregons (see: Virginia, UNC, Illinois, etc).

I clearly have been following the team for 3 decades been to dozens of away games since 1998 and 4 home games over the same amount of time, and donated many thousands of dollars in the same amount of time. So you can question if I have the right take but questioning my knowledge is ridiculous.

I think questioning your experience may be redic...but not your knowledge.

I guess that's me!

I loved the decision to hire Herm Edwards.

That doesn't surprise me but you are not normal college football guy. :):) To be honest I was rooting for him to be successful because everyone hated it soo much. people hated the Pete Carroll hire too.

Word on the street is that the (primary) owner of the Ritz-Carlton in Tucson paid to get rid of Sumlin.

I was at his first Arizona game in Tucson (loss to BYU) on September 1st, 2018. Here he is getting off the bus adjacent to the major tailgating location before he walked to the stadium.

I like Herm, so I think it's great for him. I thought it was a risky hire.

I kinda thought the same thing with Pete Carroll, but he clearly had a plan. Much like Marrone when he came here. (other than Mr. Tunnel Screen as OC, but no one's makes all perfect personnel decisions. The best leaders are the ones who realize it and rip the band aid off right away, as Marrone did).

I was wondering about him. I didn't even know SJSU was having a really good year until like a week or two ago when I looked at the top 25 closely. They've had like 6 winning seasons since 1990. Pretty impressive coaching job by him.

He has done a fantastic job. Brutally tough place to recruit

I saw San Jose play Army last season. They had an exciting offense (well they were playing Army so take that for what it is worth). The starting QB was very good as I believe was picked up as an undrafted free agent. For them to bounce back under a new qb demonstrates the ability of Brent Brennan.

Facilities are bad by MWC standards(which are generally pretty good) they have a losing tradition that has never been easy to overcome
