LaMon and UTSA avg 6 yds a run vs Army.

What Army does is still run in 3rd and long to get back into 4th and run downs..

Our D has to trust the corners so the play action doesnt hurt as much. We may see more run type blitzes on 3rd and long that pass type blitzes and contain the run more than press the pass

Great article about Army's Gun option offense. Seems analogous to the 3-3-5 defense, in that it was devised to build an offense around easier to find fast, athletic players rather than hard to find big OL.

I don't think Rocky Long ever played against this offense before, considering Drew Thatcher was in Division II Nebraska-Kearney and smaller schools previously. Nebraska-Kearney "set program records for rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, averaging over 400 yards per game in two straight seasons." I hope Rocky has analyzed this offense and has figured out ways to stop it.

Rocky apparently has a pretty solid track record vs triple option O’s.

This is a variant, for sure, but there’s still a lot that’s similar.

C’mon - they’re not a juggernaut.
It’s Army.
Our athletes are generally going to be bigger & faster across the board.

I have zero doubt that Rocky will put them into position to be successful.
It ain’t his first rodeo.

Yeah, I didn't intend to come off as alarmist. I assume Rocky is doing his homework for every opponent. So far SU's D is is more aggressive and more physical than it was under Tony White. SU's players had a lot to do with those Purdue turnovers and the fumbles that they retained, and SU shut down Purdue's running game.

My comment stems from the scars of the game at GaTech in 2013, when Shafer tried to prepare for Paul Johnson's offense in 1 week by hiring a consultant. Johnson was dumbfounded in the second half when SU did no adjustments whatsoever after being dominated 28-0 in the first half and of course they rolled it up to 56-0.

Drew Thatcher has never come up against the Godfather

UTSA put up 29 with a backup QB, unless we pull a Purdue and fumble all over the place, why the hell can’t we do better than 33? I am thinking 42-17 kind of game
I’m thinking 41-7. Conventional wisdom says that Army will slow the game down and keep the score lower. I think our D keeps them from doing that and I think Shrader and company hang some points up.

That's how I see them, too. Yes, it's not a wishbone, but it's still a heavily run reliant option offense.

I'm hopeful, Dick, but those guys gotta catch the ball a lot better this week.

Coach Monken mentions that Army beat San Diego State (Rocky Long) in the Armed Forces Bowl in 2017. The score was 42-35.

Ima assume Cuse has more and better talent for The Godfather to work with, vs SDSU.

And also a better O, which makes life easier on the D, not having to win the game themselves.

Army lost to LA - Monroe.
13-17.

I’m comfortable in the knowledge that we’re oodles better across the board than LA - Monroe.

One thing he said about that bowl game was that Army cut down their playbook to only 6 plays (!), because they had no idea what formations Rocky was going to use and he couldn't tell if any other plays would work. He has great respect for Long and SU.

That bowl was "let Rashaad Penny score quickly and respond with a long drive," it was simultaneously frustrating and wonderful to watch.
