this program is in much better shape than it was post Robinson.

It's not four years of 10-37, it's 21-29.

Until this year the defense had ranged from good to excellent going back six straight seasons.

The team really was very young except on the OL and half of the DL two deep.

Team speed is better than it has been in a long time, kids seem like better athletes, not sure about football players. Roster still lacks stature, in particular on the back 7 on the defense, but the a design tradeoff.

Post Robinson the program needed a guy that was more than looking at the next job. This next phase is to find a guy who can take the pieces here and make the next step. Shafer couldn't take the program higher for a wide range of reasons, many not anything he had control over, but circumstances are likely to force a change.

I'm not pushing him to go, I think next year they could be good with some staff changes, but I have no objection to moving on.

There are plenty of good candidates to choose from, it's a matter of will and finding the resources.

its all about the record for most of the fans. but the team is trending in the right direction regardless of wins and losses. the D will be better next year just because of experience and stop doing the mental mistakes thats young players make. huge uptick in QB play with 2 new kids this year. just connecting on the wide open throws makes an offense look good no matter the play calling. the oline is still the concern and will we have any DE to start next season with.

even yesterday you look at the big throws NCst made into tight coverage and the wide open throws we missed and its completely different game .

for the moral of the program it might be best to go another direction but the next coach if we have any kind of class is going to be coming into a decent situation.

This. FWIW.

Why are you using four years? Shafer is 13-23 and 6-17 in the last two seasons. That a whole five percentage points above Gerg-ian levels since that epic Villanova battle. I've seen enough.

As pissed as I am at how this year has turned out I would not want to lose the defensive team we have, this year appears to be an anomaly, and our offense has improved ... as has recruiting. If there weren't some big name coaches out there this off season I would think there might be fewer complaints.

This year's offense + last year's defense and we're going bowling. The offense imploded last year because of the injuries and the defense imploded this year because we lost 8 guys, another guy had too many concussions, another transferred and our top recruit had to go to junior college.

Hence why we can't sit around wasting some of our main pieces while our coaching stuff routinely a misfires on game day.

Time to act.

I am not so sure. Other than red zone conversions perhaps, offensive numbers are not all that much different versus last year and arguably, are worse than 2013.

One thing is for sure and that is that all of our numbers are very offensive.

You missed the entire point of the post.

Gerg messes everything up

He was so terrible that he permanently goofed up how we evaluate coaches. I'm guilty of it too. I feel a little bad that Gerg got 4 years and Shafer might not. But it's so insanely stupid that Gerg got a 4th year, i just choose to pretend like those years didn't happen.

Shafer going would be a no brainer to any program who didn't have that gergian aftertaste.

We had no money thus we couldn't eat 2 years of Gerg salary. With the influx of TV money if we had 15 million dollars more a year in TV revenue in 2007 I am sure we make a move. However, I wouldn't want Gross to pick a FB coach as he went 1 for 3 and the 1 was his third choice at best.

The program in 2015 is miles better than it was in 2009. Gerg didn't have a conditioning program for OL/DL. I remember Marrone coming in and instituting the weight and conditioning program for our players.

SS is a good man. Some people are great #2s but not good #1s. SS did not prove anything to show before he was hired he could be a #1. In retrospect I believe Dr. Gross had ridiculous spending going on in the AD and Marrone left because IPF and other things being slow he hired the cheap alternative and tried spinning it to continue positive momentum.

SS should have been a MAC level HC before he got a P5 job. Syracuse did the same thing with P but P had experience as HC in Connecticut at a lower level. SS's resume before he got the SU job was probably the weakest among all P5 coaches. His Ds were solid at Stanford and Syracuse but they weren't getting him a HC job. Dr. Gross paid SS 1.4 million a year and probably gave him a coaching budget for another 2-2.5 million. Syracuse needs to invest more money into its HC and coaches in FB. I wouldn't give the money to just anybody but we need to make this move.

We went from averaging 17 points to 28 on about the same number of yards. The yards are down because the defense can't get off the field. Anyhow, it will be another coach's problem now.

we are 97th in yards per play

it's not just the defense

Then why are we scoring 11 more points per game?
URI game vs. Nova game.
3 Def TDs factoring into PPG
2 punt returns for TDs.
20 points we scored in OTs vs. CMU and UVA.

Those score inflate our PPG.

Then why are we scoring 11 more points per game?

1. Because it was coming off of being ridiculously awful scoring offense.

2. Top 4 in non offensive TD's, both absolute and percentage of scoring

3. A couple of OT short field scores.

This offense is not scoring 28 pts a game in regulation.

4 defensive TD, 2 punt returns, 3 overtime TD.

that's about half of the increase.

the other half is lester being better than mcdonald at calling plays

we are 80th in red zone TD%.

murphy has been good inside 40 yards

Not entirely. Part of the issue is failure to convert third downs. Yards per play are about the same and worse than 2013. Also, a lot of the scoring this year has been in garbage space and OT.

Like we didn't any garbage-time scoring, Defensive scoring, OT, etc - last year??

Is this program that much better off right now? Possible back-to-back 3 win seasons is very Gergian and a big step down from Marrone had gotten the program.

We can talk about recruiting being improved and all that, but results on the field are all that matters. Right now, those results are awful and this program needs someone to jolt it back to life. Again.

In-game coaching was not SS's strong suit and it really has hurt this team. Maybe a better game day coach will be able to take the current talent and elevate it.

not nearly as much. 3 defensive scores, no overtime, no punt or kick returns

We didn't go to OT against 'Nova last year? Did I dream that whole thing where #DIXONFORHEISMAN threw the winning TD pass?
