Ashton Broyld on final day of Fall camp

From what I've been told, I would bet that AB will be a featured part of this offense.

He's going to be a wingback that gets some shotgun snaps. He will be a significant part, but the offense is not going to be built around him.

I think the new wrinkle that will catch NW is if they use the no huddle that that showed in the first scrimmage. We haven't heard much about yesterday's scrimmage until today, and that was almost exclusively from Rahme ( nolan is wasted space). Rahme wrote about who looked good but not what the team ran. I'm hoping there is more no huddle to come.

I just watched the interview with Jerome Smith over on SU Athletics. First of all, Jerome Smith is a great kid, and I wish him all the success in the world.

Why I'm posting here is because when Smith was asked about Ashton Broyld I think his facial expression says it all. Seemed to me like Smith has a ton of respect for AB's talent level. How does that translate on the field this year, obviously I do not know. But if the staff has confidence in him that's a good sign in my opinion.

I'm a little confused by your response, Go. I don't think that I implied that the offense will be "built around him."

Depending on his learning curve, he will be a featured part of the offense. He is regarded as being "by far, the best athlete and playmaker we have had on offense...we are going to use him." Obviously, those are not my words. Nor is that second hand information.

PM me if you like.

Not to piss on the parade here, but supposing you're the NW D coordinator, how much are you really worried about Broyld at this point? He's a decent recruit seeing his first game action. He's a completely unknown quantity.

Would you try to plan on the idea that a lot of the offense runs through Broyld, or would you game plan more on Nassib/Lemon/Sales/Stevens/running back of your choice? I think I'd plan on the guys I've got tape on and take my chances that Broyld's just another guy.

If that is the perspective the D coordinator takes, here's hoping what's planned for Broyld, whatever and how much that is, is enough to make an under prepared defense pay in game one.

Good points, Otto.

NW will not be taken by surprise regardless of what/who we have. They make will some assumptions, watch tape from last year, plan accordingly, and make adjustments as necessary.

They play in the B1G, they play against great players and schemes all the time, they have seen it all.

They will look at tape from last year Jam our recievers at the line and play 8 in the box pretty simple to defend against us. Given that Hack is still running the show i doubt they expect too many new wrinkles. If we want to win this game we cant throw away the first two or three series running off tackle. In my opinion i would love to see us come out with a fast tempo shot gun and try to get Flash in space or catch Stevens down the seam.

Enough with the myths. On first and 10 in the first quarter last year they passed 37 times and ran 43.

We don't have a Reggie Bush or a Denard Robinson.

It would be nice to think that we might if AB can greatly exceed any of his expectations.

He wont be that in 10 days though.

Amen to this. They will DEFINITELY stack the box, jam the receivers and if our OLine can't protect, they won't have to worry about Lemon much. And they'll have enough people in the box to make it difficult to establish our running game no matter who we put in the backfield. As it did (often) last season, this game will come down to whether our Dline can stop their running attack and get pressure (I like our defensive backfield), and on the other side of the ball, whether our OLine can give Nassib enough time to hook up with Sales/Lemon/Stevens and make them pay for stacking the box. If not, we'll be standing up with our hands outstretched waiting for points that will never be scored.

Don't you know that everything is already established on the first play and after the other team scored a 28 point td on their first possession, we had to throw out of necessity, not choice

Those posts just make me shake my head

Don't ever let the facts get in the way of an ill-informed opinion.

I hope it isn't carries as much as just "touches". Got a feeling he may be one of those guys well-suited for the bubble screen, which we all have grown to love.

Arrghhhh. Bubble screen. Not something I have come to love. So, in principle, I disagree, not when it is run so predictably.

Arrrghhh.

;)

what are the stats for first and ten on the first and second series?

...all of which is why I assume the coaching staff shut down practice to media / fan observation.

Or at least, that's how I'm rationalizing things.

How many times do you think a team has the ball in a quarter?

The whole NW defensive staff should be canned if they get duped into this. The cat's outta the bag with AB.

there's a big difference between knowing that he is going to get the ball and knowing where he will line up in what formation and when he gets the ball. HCDM is protecting his play calling not the fact that Ashton will get the ball.

The question that i would love an answer to is simple. How many times during the first three Syracuse possesions did we run on first down vs pass on first down?

ha

i want you to tell me what Syracuse did on the 1st play of the 4th set of downs on the 8th possession in the first quarter of road games in september where they kicked the opening kickoff

i'm willing to bet that you won't find a SINGLE PASS attempt thereby proving that marrone doesn't want to throw the ball!

i agree with this. i only want bubble screens when the other team gives them to you. it's just a play to keep people honest. smart football guy calls it a constraint play. it can't be some bread and butter go to play.

if they're going to throw a lot of screens to broyld, they better all be forward. i don't care if he is a threat to throw after catching a backward pass , it's not worth the risk of turnovers from him dropping it

i won't be surprised at all if this happens though.

I agree, I don't doubt that Broyld is a great athlete and will do some great things for us but first game I am expecting a couple carries, few short receptions and maybe a wildcat carry or two that total about 50 yards. Solid but nothing earth shattering, the expectataions can get out of whack

ps, you can go through box scores too you know

You already have the answer.

Who cares run or pass? The goal is more explosive plays one way or another, more big gains less 1-2 ayrds gains and sadly a lot of our passes resulted in such. The run/pass thing on first down doesn't mean a GD thing in the college game at ALL, do you think Oregon fans care if they run or pass on first down? WVU fans care last year if they run on first down. More yards, bigger plays, more points, the run to pass thing is an antique

Damn right. Forget third and short, I want more second and short situations where it gives the offense more options and keeps the defense on their heels.

I think once SU starts winning more 99% of the people won't care at all but until then most will have opinions on what will work.
