At a loss

Probably just an overreaction, but tonight it hit me that we may never make it back to relevance. We can never take the next step until we decide to pay coaches or find money somewhere to pay coaches.

Couldn't agree more, though I've been there since we joined the ACC. I just feel like it is such a massive uphill battle and I'm not sure the school is actually committed to fighting that battle. I'm not sure I disagree with them, but still, the point remains, I'm not sure they have the stomach for big-time college football.

Football school brah
That's always made me laugh. Even though we were good in the 90s, we still haven't been a football school since the late 80s at the latest.

We are Duke. Circa 1995.

It's hilarious.

It's hilarious.
By the way, you know how I know we haven't been a football school in decades? I work in athletics. I work with people from all over the country. And the one consistent thing they say is "Does Syracuse even have a football team anymore?" (jokingly, of course, but everyone outside of Syracuse views us as a 100% basketball school...that is the way it is, and people insisting we are still a football school need to get a dose of reality)

Bottom line - the perception nationally is that we are a basketball school. People here don't want to accept that.

I can keep telling myself I'm a great dancer, but if enough people tell me I dance like a spastic, ed, one legged monkey, at some point I should probably listen to them and realize that's exactly what I am no matter how badly I want to believe otherwise.

What?

We were very good in the 90s.

I'll take that anyday.

Thing is, it's so much easier to field a good basketball team. Success in football is damn hard, especially for a majority of Northeast schools.

I said we were good in the 90s. Did you not see that part of my post?

"Very" good may be a stretch.

1990: 7-4-2
1991: 10-2
1992: 10-2
1993: 6-4-1
1994: 7-4
1995: 9-3
1996: 9-3
1997: 9-4
1998: 8-4
1999: 7-5

I'd call that "good." Nothing more.

Also important to note that even with McNabb, we never finished ranked higher than 16. We only finished ranked inside the top 10 once, and the top 15 twice in the entire decade. And we were only ranked at the end of the year 7 of the 10 years. That's just "good" and definitely not "very good" if you ask me.

Again, I'll take it.

We had one great team in the late 80s. We'd win 8 games against that schedule now.

If you think we're ever winning more than 9 games, good luck.

I still think it's hilarious the perspective people have in Syracuse of SU Football nationally. It's incredible how off it is and one of my biggest issues with other SU fans.

44cuse

I would take it as well. But it says something that even in one of our longest sustained periods of success we were "pretty good" and that's about it.

We're never going to be better than pretty good.

We're in the wrong part of the country to to better than that.

We're also very good in hoops, but we've won one NC and may never win another in our lifetime.

We're better than very good in hoops, we're pretty much elite in hoops and have been ever since JB took over the program. We also happen to be in a great part of the country to build a hoops program with proximity to a lot of excellent talent producing regions.

Football, yes, we are in the wrong part of the country, and as a relatively small private school, we're the wrong kind of college to make any sort of lasting impact.

Right, we're an elite hoops program with one NC.

I'll always be a bigger football fan.
