At a loss

Right, we're an elite hoops program with one NC.

I'll always be a bigger football fan.
Congratulations. More power to you. I love the hoops and football programs about equally, and it hurts equally when either one loses. Sadly I've gotten more and more numbed by the football program since 1999 - which, sadly, was my freshman year at SU. Just missed out on actual exciting Syracuse football, the 10-3 season in 2001 aside (since that wasn't particularly exciting as much as managing the offense and getting an otherwordly defensive performance out of Freeney).

We are both.
However the two aren't really related. They are two seperate programs with the same fans, and school name.

A national championship in football wouldn't mean much to me I would be excited and happy. one in basketball would mean ALOT to me personally. For others its the opposite, reguardless they are two seperate programs unrelated.

My apologies. You came along at the wrong time. I've been a fan since the 60s. More than my share of highs and lows. Ii'm perfectly fine with 7-8 win seasons right now. But after tonight, color me concerned.

By the way, you know how I know we haven't been a football school in decades? I work in athletics. I work with people from all over the country. And the one consistent thing they say is "Does Syracuse even have a football team anymore?" (jokingly, of course, but everyone outside of Syracuse views us as a 100% basketball school...that is the way it is, and people insisting we are still a football school need to get a dose of reality)

Bottom line - the perception nationally is that we are a basketball school. People here don't want to accept that.

I can keep telling myself I'm a great dancer, but if enough people tell me I dance like a spastic, ed, one legged monkey, at some point I should probably listen to them and realize that's exactly what I am no matter how badly I want to believe otherwise.

I've tried to explain on this board about 1,718 times that no one outside of us cares at all about SU football, but then everyone starts hyperventilating and talking about Jim Brown and Ernie Davis, so I let it slide. But I have a bunch of buddies from Boston, NYC, NJ, and then I live in Balt/DC and there is not a soul who even slightly cares about SU football. They barely care about UMD or RU or whomever they are closest to. Was watching ND/Cuse last weekend and my buddies were laughing so hard at my thinking SU had a chance to win. I'm not saying they're right, but simply that they are pretty big sports fans but they still think it's ridiculous that SU could be ND in football. I guess they were basically correct.

This was the most disappointing game of the season.dfense hangs in for 3 quarters but offense couldnt do anything

Completely agree. The general opinion of Syracuse football in the major metropolitan areas is... Not good...

Probably just an overreaction, but tonight it hit me that we may never make it back to relevance. We can never take the next step until we decide to pay coaches or find money somewhere to pay coaches.
You aren't wrong. What DePaul is in basketball SU is in football. A doormat with no chance of ever getting back to what we once were. SU was good in the 80's and 90's but that era of college football is dead and buried. SU can't compete anymore in the current set-up of college football. Much like a school like DePaul or St.Johns can't compete in college basketball like they could in the 70's and 80's. The current era is based on MONEY, facilities and the playoff system now in place. SU even if they ran the table in a given year wouldn't be guaranteed of a playoff spot in the Final Four. That's all you need to know. The ACC is weak more years than not and even going unbeaten you might not make the playoff. SU will never get back to relevance in football, its a hard fact to accept but its a true fact.

So if you can't win it all due to circumstances outside your control, the bar is set low at Syracuse. Win 6 games and go to a bowl get some extra weeks of practice for the next year. Because after the playoff all bowl games are essentially meaningless and the same. I mean does it matter if you are in the Texas Bowl, Independence Bowl, Music City Bowl, or Pinstripe bowl...honestly, no! It doesn't. Even with the bar set low SU still struggles to reach it. It's amazing
