Class of 2024 ATH Malachi James (NJ) COMMITTED / SIGNED TO SYRACUSE (2/7/24)

Brown is the new fast
Speed is what makes the top teams good.
Prevent opponents scores, and turn ordinary plays into Touchdowns.
Players like Tebucky Jones running down a running back to save a TD.
Or a Dar Dar going the distance on a kickoff return, Harrison going 80 yards on a pass play.
We used to have those type of players, now Fran is bringing those type of players back.

you can easily find a dozen plays last year where speed would have scored TDs. Lets hope we find that out this yr.

Every yr it seems like the other teams O is faster than our D and the other teams D is faster than our O. It would be nice to see it in our favor more often.

Just for comparison, Zay Flowers ran a 4.42 (Ravens). Another guy with elite speed (that we struggled to cover), Tutu Atwell (LA Rams), ran a 4.39 ... at 5-9 155 lbs. MJ is faster than both and almost 200 lbs. Wherever he shows up on the field, RB, slot, WR, KR, etc., he's going to be a matchup problem.
Love the sound of that. Tired of having lack of speed going against us for so many years. Soooo excited to see all of this speed and talent in action.

From his film (my non-expert take), at 5-11, almost 200 lbs and those long strides, he looks more like a RB who can catch than a WR who can run. But the staff may want him at WR or slot to get him in space.

We finally are getting guys who can take a reverse, and make something out of it even if the defense plays it well.
If you have the speed and strength to have the tackler miss or break the first tackle, it makes a difference.
We have used little guys on reverses, and they always get blown up, by arm tackles, or not enough speed.

He is one of fastest human beings on the planet. Probably top 100 for his size. Nobody is catching him from behind. Ds are going to have to account for this kid. I hope that we see him lined up in the backfield and at WR.

Here are the top 5 55m sprinters in the US….

#2 on that fastest 55M list with a 6.24 is a young man also named Malachi - Malachi Coleman from Virginia (5'11, 180). He appears to be an explosive but under-recruited RB within the SU recruiting footprint. Good grades, blazing speed - staff alert candidate?

Fast enough that the kid who is ahead of him in the 55 is just barely ahead of him in the 60

Offers from ODU for track and Cornell for football so far. Other Ivy schools also interested so grades do not appear to be an issue.

If the size is legit (5'11, 180), the speed numbers are accurate and grades are not an issue, you would think he'd be more heavily recruited, especially after winning POY for his conference? The kid can fly. There are times when he literally looks like a blur on his highlight reel? Wonder if the SU staff knows about him?

Great article on this kid. Love everything about how Fran does Fran. This kid will reach his goals and be a better human if what we believe Fran is turns out to be true in action and not just words (only saying this bc Fran has been here since thanksgiving)
