Axe: Should Syracuse extend Fran Brown’s contract?

I like the idea of bumping his salary and massaging the buy-out now. The extension can come after this season.
Yep if we go 7–5 or better with that schedule, than yes extend away in a big way both years and $ wise.

That said, NMcuse below is probably correct, we have a unicorn unique coach perfectly suited for the modern era of whatever college football is now, one who can navigate all of it's circumstances and obstacles well and can overcome our historical obstacles we face up here. So, yeah, extend now a bit sure, then if the 7-5 or better comes do it again only bigger/better. that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Last season was a huge rush, but let’s pump the brakes a bit. Beat exactly one FBS school by more than one score in the regular season. Tough to identify a single position group that is better than last year. 14 of 22 starters were carryovers from previous staff. And the schedule this year is a gauntlet. Don’t get me wrong. All in on Fran and the program and we are certainly recruiting at a historically high level, but last time we extended a 10 win coach it wasn’t quite as much of a no brainer in hindsight.

And before you respond that Fran is not Dino, take an honest look back at how you felt about the program in August 2019.

And it's been mentioned before, but if a factory program wants him (and puts the money up), there's no contract extension that will keep him here.

Based on evidence over the past 10+ years, I would say that size does matter.

Tack on 5+ years and I'm good. :)

This is his new home. (allegedly)
He's not going to Rutgirls. (his old home)

A BIG buyout would be good if he did leave.
I really believe that he wants SU to win the ACC and make it (at least) to the finals of the CFB playoffs.
Lock him in!

I want to say lifetime contract right now but I threw away the orange sunglasses lol
He needs another solid year of 7 or more wins, then talk extension BUT the big boys can literally pay anything we put in the buyout

I believe he wants SU to win too. I'm just going to enjoy the ride while he's here.

That and if push ever came to shove, I know Fran probably has/would have a massive buyout.

7 wins might be a steep climb with the schedule this season. Getting to a bowl game would be great.

That’s also why when you do increase the amount or extend, you get a bigger buyout.

For what it’s worth, I think Fran appreciates some of the softer elements of coaching here. Having a longer leash and not dealing with the boosters of the SEC are two substantial benefits. He’s not naive to know how a black coach is treated by old money in the south. We don’t have aggressive boosters like he’d deal with there. He wins he gets a statue here. And he coaches out his sons.

Of course if he wins this year we’re gonna have to bump him and at least get him in the right stratosphere. He should get more if he wins but there’s a benefit to some of the other elements that comes with coaching here that can help close the divide.

Also his son is building relationships in middle school and growing up with some new friends here. Fran has said multiple times he loves the way the community has treated his family and him.

Good take. There’s also something about turning this program around that has to be appealing to Fran. He likes to develop people and things, he can do that here and in his own way. He could do that elsewhere, of course, but he’s here now and we’re his present project … I think the university just needs to take care not to get in Frans way. Let him build and offer a new deal when he shows continued success - it’s a nice affirmation of the on the field success

Correct. We may not be able to pay him the most, but we should and can pay him a lot, and we should damn well take care of him and his family in all the other ways this community is capable of. Show up and be loud. I know the school makes it hard at times with lots of things but Fran deserves the support and so do the kids.

The problem is Fran may have several suitors after this season if he gets 7 wins or more this season. I agree that in a perfect world we wait but if this scenario plays out we may not be able to compete financially. We may have to roll the dice.

Extend him with the phat buyout so at least we can get the phat cash if he left. He isn’t Dino, Dino completely lost his fire after he got extended, Fran would sooner light himself on fire than lose his fire
I'm waiting until after this season to extend him, but agree totally with your second thought. I can't ever see Fran phoning it in like Dino and basically just throwing up his hands at some of the challenges of the SU job like NIL.

The man said he's here for 10 years. Our fan base needs to get over this phycology that he is going to leave us. Because after the 10 years is done, we wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as we may have due to self inflicted anxiety.

Of course we don’t know the details of the current contract in terms of number of years, salary and buyout.
That being said, I think the perceived ceiling for the program combined with the expansion of the CFP have changed the aspirations of many. So I would definitely support a renegotiation with substantial performance based bonuses added in exchange for a bigger buyout. But adding on years, assuming he has at minimum a four or five year deal, is a bit premature, and, as others have noted, if a Georgia or Ohio State (or the NFL) comes calling and Fran wants to chase the biggest financial package Syracuse will lose out. Just need to ensure they can mitigate the loss to the greatest extent possible.

One of many great things about SU and CNY is that he's not getting death threats and for sale signs on his house after a bad loss. That has to account for something. I'm sure Kyle appreciated that a little after the Pitt game.
