Bad press impact on recruiting

I just hit the Miami herald, Orlando sentinel, Atlanta journal, charlotte observer, Detroit free press and guess what? Nada.
To be fair, no one under the age of 40 reads those papers, even online. ;). If it’s on Instagram then maybe a recruit will see it.

I agree with the broader point though, this isn’t a particularly big story. National outlets cover almost everything in the digital age, because they can easily, and a wire service story can be templated and used for search engine optimization. SU people are seeing it because of interest and algorithms.

You think they’re all snapping about it? Making tictoks, Instagram?
I think you are overreacting to my post. Where did I say anyone was snapping? Well, besides you.

Alabama's tendency toward racism is still ongoing. Yet they still have no problem attacking football recruits of color. In Syracuse's current situation; both the university and the state are taking action to discover who is perpetrating these ugly racist comments! We should not be at a significant disadvantage; once the culprit (s) are discovered. At this point, there has been no official announcement as to who these individuals are; except members of Alpha Chi Rho, In the times we are living through there could be numerous perpetrators operating at and close to the university. We really must let these investigations play out prior to knowing the extent of the recruiting fallout.

Nah saying the broader point that there is zero press/publicity for the incidents. And it showing up in your feed is because of what Scooch said about su interest and algorithms.

It astonishes me and I believe it's another unintended negative consequence of social media. It has eroded people's sense of privacy - both the fools who post mundane details and the voyeurs who passively observe.

I lived in China, thankfully before the advent of smartphones, and my phone calls were regularly listened to in real time.

I know what it's like to have zero expectation of privacy and wish more Americans had a better understanding of the risks tacitly accepting 24/7 monitoring poses to our society.

Mentioning cameras and social media made me think of this sad story from Rutgers.

Was just speaking to the broader point of no publicity.

I thought the OP was going to explain that Isaiah Jackson didn't come here because trunk monkey was such a turnoff.

And you don't think recruits who are seriously being pursued by Dino and JB & Co. have "su interest"?

I don't think any of this will have any effect whatsoever on recruiting. Players pick based on staff, and other players, pro prospects etc (I think)

This isn't something that should be minimized, in anyway. Some students are leaving early. Others, including athletes, are not going to class. For them, and their families, this is a very real, horrible situation. If you can Google Syracuse, its everywhere.

Another racist situation, last year. If you don't think students or recruits ask others what it's like there? You are dreaming. If I were recruiting for a different school? I'd definently mention it, and I wouldn't view it as negative recruiting. It's a real consideration.

There are things more important than football.

No impact. zero. No kids in Florida, or North Carolina, or Georgia are hearing about it nor do they care.
It was on the Today show today. The nightly news last night. They don't have tv's in Florida, North Carolina or Georgia? This can't help recruiting. Let's start there. And if one kid says no to Syracuse in part because of it, it hurts recruiting.

Well, I just googled the Detroit Free Press and Syracuse racism and a story appeared on the Detroit Free Press one hour ago. I just googled the AJC and a story appeared 12 hours ago. The Miami Herald has a story 2 hours ago. The Orlando Sentinel had a story 19 hours ago. The Charlotte Observer had a story 2 days ago and a different story 19 hours ago. Phat, it's a far cry from Nada. Not for nothing but I went to the L.A. Times and they had two stories in the past 3 days.

Hopefully they catch the perp AND make the institutional changes necessary to make SU more inclusive for all students and to make sure that everyone, but especially those in marginalized groups, feels safe each and every day on campus.

Then and only then do I hope it blows over quickly.
How is any of this ON SU? Let's assume it's all a few white guys. Where in the SU code of conduct is this allowed or encouraged?
This is not an SU problem. It's an individual problem happening at SU.
Do kids feel safe at VA Tech? Seemingly so.

it’s been on the 3 major networks and some of their shows like the today show. It’s been on CNN. It’s on the front page of the New York Times today. The networks and many other media outlets have been on campus the past few days. It’s been covered blow by blow on a few Facebook pages that are set up for parents of both current and prospective students.

Don’t know if any athletes will see any of that or if it will have an impact. The potential is there however. But it’s getting coverage and that coverage gets broader and broader every day. When the FBI is crawling around campus, people notice.

Unfortunately this problem isn't limited to Syracuse. I think the university has at least been honest and proactive about the problem.

I'm all for SU installing cameras in each bathroom stall just to demonstate how over-the-top the reaction has been.

This type of graffiti was in pretty much every bathroom stall in high school, along with other language that ran the gamut of "offensive" topics. You can erase the graffiti but idiots are like cockroaches. You can't eradicate them from the population.

For the students you know... What was their reaction? Did their Mothers call them up bawling? The ones I know did.

If you want to say it's been over hyped? OK. I don't believe anyone should give into fear, either. Easier said than done. I have zero problem with the reporting.

Idiots are everywhere, but issues in back to back years is a serious problem.

Just went again to Detroit Free Press and Orlando Sentinel and using their search tool put in Syracuse and racism and syracuse racism and nothing. Ironically both UCF and Michigan St had articles. Wonder how that effects their recruiting? Zero.

They don’t need to hear about it. Opposing coaches will use it to negatively recruit. Oh, did you hear about what’s going on at Syracuse??

In a few days they’ll be on to their next sensationalist story.

I gave some reasons for believing that it’ll will have no impact on recruiting and it won’t. I’m sure some coach will try to use it but at the end of the day it won’t hurt.

Would anyone anywhere seriously think that a school with one of the few African-American head coaches in CFB is more or less racist than any other university?

They’ll try sure just like i hope we’re showing penn state recruits they can look forward to death threats. They’ll ignore it and still sign with penn state.

Lots of published racism on sec campuses yet I don’t need hear about any fallout ever.

I’ve been listening to CBS radio in New York this week. Now I realize a lot of recruits don’t listen to news radio, but I’m sure their parents might. But it’s been mentioned on that station about once every half hour.

It doesn’t matter. It’s the climate and safety at the school that matters. Our best hope is that this goes away quickly, but publicity and copycats have added fuel to the fire.

Once every half hour because of some bathroom graffiti? That must be getting as much air time as the impeachment.
