"The zone's the easiest defense in the world to play against."

Steve Lavin disagrees.

Charles Barkley's an idiot. End of rant.

all this time I thought he went to Auburn for their stout pre-med program.

It it pouring through the TV that Lavin does not think highly of Mr. Barkley

Barkley is in the Hall of Fame. He might know what he is talking about.

He's not in the coaching hall of fame. It's obvious he hasn't watched one minute of NCAA basketball this year.

If he's going to be a talking head for CBS during March Madness he should at least know what he's talking about.

haha yes that is true. It is funny to watch Lavins face after Barkley talks. Its like man this guy is a total moron.

yeah i think he is talking from an NBA standpoint. College is a different ballgame, and he may not watch enough college hoops to realize that.

Gee that Zone D is so easy to play against isn't it Chuck. Maybe he should tell that to K-State.

Zone defense is the easiest defense in the world to play against when you have NBA guards and shooters...that is the entire point..90 percent of college teams are ill equipped to deal with what problems a zone presents..

That's funny.
I sent a friend an email with that exact subject caption yesterday...about a completely different Syracuse-related topic.

Too often...like so many of the ex-players...Barkley just talks.
That's why I appreciate guys like Bilas, Kellogg and Elmore...a trio who usually have something to say.
And they're often insightful.

Has Barkley ever won a championship at any level? I love Chuck but he clearly does not know nor respect Boeheim's zone.

agree they need to get rid of Charles

They need to get rid of all the NBA guys except Greg Anthony. Barkley, Kenny Smith, Reggie Miller, Steve Kerr...even Marv Albert is out of his element.

I agree Barkley sees the game as a great player that his why he could coach, it just came too easy to him. So to him attacking zones is easy.

Is this a different, better, Hall of Fame than the one our zone coach is in? You can tell neither of these NBA fools on the panel know the first thing about running a team or coaching. Lavin, as always, had JBs back. Greg Anthony also realizes there are some positive points and tries to defend the team.

Exactly...he said something like "you just have to make the open shot"

Yeah, sounds great...in the NBA where everyone drains open looks. A 18-19 year old PG might settle for a shitty shot or force a bad pass. These NBA guys can't understand that

Bingo. The zone would get sliced and diced by NBA players, but we face a ton of teams who put guys at the foul line who have no chance of making that shot, so it's a totally different dynamic. It's on Chuck for not realizing that.

One thing they mentioned about the zone was not having a man to put a body on a man and thus the offensive rebounds. I guess we just play it well enough to overcome those. I actually was more interested in how Reggie Miller would talk about the Cuse after JB's jab at him the other day.

Dallas played mostly zone last year and beat the Heat

That is a fair point. Though I think that was also because it was a relatively new thing, and if I remember correctly, they sprung it on them in the middle of the series. I think if Miami knew the entire time they were going to be facing a zone (like a team we were facing would) they would've been a lot more successful. (Though they are also probably a team you would want to zone in the NBA, if you were to go that route.)

I thought Kenny Smith's comment was just as dumb. Something along the lines of, "If zone defense was so great, more teams would use it."

If he bothered to do his homework, he would recognize that few teams have the personnel to play this type of zone.
