BC fires Jim Christian / hires Earl Grant

There needs to be some rationalization of some of the names thrown out here. Why would Randy Bennett, a west coast coach throughout his entire career, go to a dumpster fire of a program on the East Coast?
I would be shocked if Schmidt leaves Bona for BC, too. Especially going into next season when they should be really good.

If he wants to leave he’ll wait a year and get a better job.

Don’t think Becker leaves Vermont for BC either.

Also, I can’t stand Goodman

Schmidt is a BC alum if they actually pay 2 million per year I think he takes that job.
I think it makes sense logically. It will be interesting to see what approach the BC administration takes. Schmidt is a guy who will take a few years to get it going. If the admin wants a “win now” coach, they might do some more dumb things.

Gerry makes too much sense for this job if he's given a stamp of approval from Boeheim and Wildhack. I mean let him go learn on the job and build that program up.

Rick Pitino is the fix now candidate that they can't afford. He'd do wonders for them getting back to the NCAA but alot of noses would have to be held to accomplish this lift.

Gerry couldn’t get the Siena job. BC needs to get this hire correct. They haven’t made the NCAAT since 2009.

They will hire a midmajor HC and hope he has the program good in 3 years.
Amaker at Harvard
Coen at Northeastern
Schmidt at St. Bona

They should hire an alum - Malcolm Huckaby would be perfect. An no, this has nothing to do with me not wanting to ever hear him do a game on the ACC Network ever again. I swear... :)

Christian was a complete outsider type hire. I think it makes sense they go for an alum here and suspect Schmidt is their top pick.

Not sure if they will pay what he needs to leave Bona.

Again, if it was me, I would go for Cooley. He has the contacts and recruiting ability in the East and New England to turn things around pretty quickly.

But there is BC we are talking about. Doubt they go that direction.

Gerry seems like a nice guy from all accounts but what about his coaching resume suggests he’s an ACC caliber coach?

He’s been at one program his whole coaching career. At that program he was the third assistant on a team that had great success but ultimately was hit with pretty serious NCAA sanctions. Then became the second assistant while they steady trended downward and been floating around .500 in the ACC and living on the bubble. And he objectively does not have a reputation or track record of being a lights out recruiter.

Looking at track record and resume BC (or any ACC school) can do a lot better.

What is the Cooley direction mean? I think they'd love to have him but he's aspiring to go higher is my guess. He was Al's right hand man at BC so that is a plug and play.

I think if they want the best alum go get Bruce Pearl. But he comes with roughly 3,000 red flags i would guess. The alum route makes sense if you are looking to build on a legacy. BC has zero legacy that they are trying to build back into. They have had coaches who have had varying degrees of success. They need to import a legacy and some sort of infrastructure. That's why i think Gerry would make a decent hire. He comes with the Syracuse pedigree and is young, enthusiastic and could potentially get Joe Girard types to the Heights (they lost out on him). He would matter to the local AAU circuit, ISL league, etc.

I brought him up months ago. Cooley would be a home run for them. They would have to throw an insane contract think 10 years to get him.

I could see one of our guys being a candidate for Saint Bonaventure if Schmidt gets the BC job.

They have tried the hot shot mid major guy with Christian and Steve Donahue and they both fell flat. This job needs a dynamic person to breath life into the program. Amaker may be it but he loves Harvard and has turned down similar opportunities already.

They wanted interviewed Hopkins and he never had a job before. Should have hired him too but his interview, from everything i heard from folks involved, was bad.

BC screwed up the last time in 2013 when Hopkins interviewed and wanted the job. Also Bruce Pearl was working as an analyst for ESPN and probably would’ve taken the job as an alum. They chose a Mac coach who didn’t do a great job and gave them seven years. If Mike Hopkins got seven years at that job they would have been in the NCAA tournament by now.

Maybe they should hire Al Skinner.

He used to win games at a small Northeastern school with little hoops support, limited recruiting targets, and a lot of traditional powers as rivals. Maybe he could do it at BC as well.

IMHO, BC would never hire someone like Pearl or Pitino. They don't have the ambition, they don't have the money and would not be able to tolerate the heat making a controversial hire like one of these guys.

Cooley might be a tough sell but they could surely pay significantly more than PC and he might want to see what he could do coaching in a big time league with a relatively big time budget and facilities.

Schmidt would also be a really good hire. He knows how to make more with less.
