Some things.
1, the other team matters too. They have talent. They have schemes. They're trying to make plays and win. There's variability to that. They're scholarship athletes. Being a backup doesn't mean the player is incompetent. It means there's someone ahead of them on the depth chart.
2, next year is next year. No point in worrying about that now when we have 3 games and a bowl left this season.
3, we have a young staff and to some extent they're building the plane while they're flying it. They will come back as better coaches next season.
It is quite obvious, glaringly so, when you look at the O & D - line and also linebackers, and defensive backs, that we are in need of an update on better talent and better coaching. So does every team but we are only in the first year of a total rebuild and not on the level of some other teams who will proceed to the national championship.
Kye Robichaux accumulated 198 yards because he was constantly allowed to run in space past the LOS. And, if you look at that stat, maybe if you are the D line coach, you adjust your men in the box accordingly to try and stop the hemorrhaging, (poor tackling).
I don’t know who is starting for us in those positions who are Baber’s holdovers or whether it matters. HCFB has to work with the talent he has. OttoinGrotto’s quote “they’re building the plane while they’re flying it is spot on.” In that respect we have to play the best we have – today it didn’t matter. They had better line play. McCord can't throw if we can't keep their players out of the back field. It isn't a good feeling to see an NFL QB getting sacked and I was glad to see a shot of McCord yelling at his OL men offenders on the sideline after another 3 and out.
A contrast in passing – James 5-6 – 51 YDS, McCord 31 – 48 – 392 YDS 2TDS - that’s the whole game, they ran it down our throats, we couldn’t stop them. We passed pretty damn well but some of McCords throws were a bit off the mark but had to be caught to off-set their running game.
Next year doesn’t matter now. Getting ready for Cal does. Say what you will, BC does have talent and exposed our weakness, not being able to stop a good running game, at least for today. Both coaches are in their freshmen seasons. Things will get better. This week it didn’t and Fran admitted, "he got out coached."
Our OL and DL do matter, a lot, we have to get better players though the portal. We are going to be the recipients of their play in every game for the rest of the season. 9-3 or 6-6? We’re going to find out.
