The few positives were that McCord had a strong final 3 quarters today. LeQuint Allen played hard and had some good blitz pickups that saved McCord from being blown up even more than he already was. It was nice to see OG show up again and his catch was incredible for the TD. Darrell Gill looked solid today (I was calling for him after that Hatcher play that got him benched), as did Meeks. Barron made a couple of good plays. Stonehouse had 2 good onside kicks.
Now the many downsides… Both our lines got bullied today, no question about it. Weatherspoon looked like a turnstile in pass pro, and he has actually been somewhat decent for most of the year. But he got manhandled all day long. You would have sworn BC has NFL caliber dlinemen across the board today. We consistently have made other teams look like they are loaded on the dline (outside of VT, who coincidentally actually have a really good dline).
Hatcher looked terrible early on the outside where he gave up on the play. I was adamant before the year that he should not be the starter and he made me look a little dumb for 2-3 games, but he’s reverted to what he’s been his previous couple of years. I’d rather Ross, JRS, Gill, or frankly anyone else get his PT at this point. Not having a second RB I think is really hurting us. BC’s 4th string RB looked like an all-ACC back comparatively.
The defense being grossly unprepared for BC’s running attack is what really frustrates me. We did not have a plan to attack their offense. We played conservatively defensively early and they gashed us. We frankly were lucky they only had 14 at half. Unfortunately we didn’t capitalize on the mistakes that held BC to just 14 at half too. Every week our defense takes poor angles and does not wrap up. It’s so frustrating to watch our safeties only use their shoulder to bring guys down or be dragged 5-10 yards as they poorly attempt to force a fumble. Diggs was a non-factor today and that is not the first time. He’s had some big moments this year but he also disappears. I’d like to see him brought off the edge more. Chestnut was invisible except for his late penalty.
Erob’s decision to bring 3 on a 3rd and 4 when their back-up QB came in almost drove me insane. We dropped 7 with a spy and there was a receiver across the middle wide open. What’s even the point of dropping that many if you can’t cover anyone. I’d rather our defense go down swinging trying to create havoc and make a play (& we would occasionally be letting up a big one) than what we are seeing. Every time one of BC’s running backs ran the ball it felt like it was a guaranteed 8 yards. Our defenders could not keep any gap integrity, or containment, and they also were consistently driven backwards. There were a number of plays where the runningback could have skipped their way to a first down without being touched. Heck, at least 2 of their touchdowns were untouched walk-ins from like 15 out. BC showed us what a good run blocking scheme and solid execution looks like.
I hate everything about our defensive scheme. It’s like we are doing a really, really poor imitation of Tony White’s bend but don’t break defense. A major difference being that Tony White was not terrified of blitzing and was consistently made great calls. Erob better be recruiting his arse off to make up for whatever defense he’s calling this year. Our defense is purely reactive and it is not dictating any facet of the game. It’s painful to watch. We have no defensive identity.
