As I am typing this I am sitting and watching our SU alum playing in the Giants vs. Steelers preseason game. Great day to be Orange!

What a beautiful day for football! Left Cortland at around 3:00 and enjoyed a beautiful drive down 81. I noticed a lot of New Jersey and Pennsylvania license plates. Curious if there was something going on in the area other than fanfest.

I arrived in Syracuse around 3:30 to a packed Manley parking lot. Made a little name tag with my screen name and syracusefan.com written on it hoping to bump into a few of our board yahoos. Did bump into KillDozer after the scrimmage and had a nice quick chat. He went in this year and got season tickets. I hope he has a great time this year!

It was a far fetch from fanfest in the past. I remember standing against the fence with a handful of on lookers.

We walked by the IPF and steel is laid out to go up. It looks like they are done or near done with the footers. I think that there is going to be a lot of progress by the time we are there on the 29th.

All the fields have now been replaced with field turf. Manley area is becoming extremely impressive and the IPF with the other fields are going to be a great recruiting tool. The team was stretching on the far fields. As we walked back to the field, we passed a couple of our ladies teams. It is great to see them out supporting the fellas. The ladies did an outstanding job interacting with the kids. There were a few games and a couple of huge, as coach calls them, “Jumpy Houses”.

After stretching the team huddled in the middle and did the prepractice/game chanting. Today’s was, “Who got your back”….”I got your back”… The punters kicked a bit as the rest of the team stretched. Dixon is going to be a weapon this year.

The defense started on the left field and offense with the right. As of right now it looks like the OL 1 is going to be Hickey, Palmer, Miller, Trudo, Lasker from left to right. It was great to see Knapp out there working with the team. It is a shame that he had to hang them up, I felt he would have done well in his last couple of seasons. Ward is very impressive looking but seemed to struggle a bit.

It looks like the RB’s are going to be a weapon all can run and catch. Adonis did an amazing job reworking his body and looks svelt. He could be a break out player this year. As we watched the RB’s going through drills a couple of college age girls were talking about some of the players. It was very amusing the fantasy land they were in. Although one thing they talked about was Gulley’s dreads. Seems that he, “kept them in a box and had them twisted back in”. I expect Sampson gulley to move pillars this year.

Acosta looks like he could suit up and be a stud.

Only other feedback I have from practice is that WW seems to be slowed by his elbow injury. He had it rewrapped.

Not a lot to take from the scrimmage. As the spring game, I think they kept it very vanilla.

QB’s

I am very impressed with Hunt. If the line can give him time, I think he will have a big year. He was extremely accurate with his long ball and connected multiple times with 20+ yard passes.

For the majority of the first ¾ of the scrimmage it was either Hunt or Long running the teams. I was surprised by Long being out there more than Kimble or Wilson. Long seems extremely small and had issues connecting with his passes. When he does scramble, he can pick up some yards. There was no contact on the QB’s. Hunt wore a Go camera.

RB’s

We have great depth here and Irv looked extremely impressive. Adonis ran hard, made great cuts, and could still move the pile. Tyson is going to be Tyson. GM and McFarlane are right there ready to go. There is no shortage here and all can catch the ball out of the backfield.

OL

1st team looked solid. Miller did a great job snapping in the shotgun. It looks like we have good depth here.

WR

Thinking of it, I didn’t notice Estime. The rest of the cast did a great job. Ashton caught the ball well and is going to be a weapon this year. It was great to see Flemming moving well. West made a few nice grabs. Ben Lewis and Cornelius had some run with the first team. Lewis looks like he is entrenched in some major PT. Avant made some big plays. The one freshman that got a ton of run was Ishmael. He made a great catch on a 30+ yard pass that had some of his teammates wolfing at him on the sidelines. You could see the smile across the field in the stands. Looks like we might redshirt some of the freshmen due to the depth. This is a great thing. All receivers caught the ball well. It is a far fetch from lining up with tiny WR's.

DL

There were multiple sacks on the QB but they were blown dead. One got a rise out of Lester. SS blew the ball dead just as Wilson made a big throw downfield for a completion to a diving Kobena. There was some ribbing going back and forth between Lester and SS. With Crume out Coleman, RT, and Johnson got a lot of run inside. RT caught some flack a couple of times from the coaches. Harvey got a good bit of run.

DB

Lots of press coverage and the boys did a great job staying with WR. Eskridge and Kelly played well at S with Kelly making some big plays. I would watch for him to do big things this year. Scissum really stood out. Williams is going to be a stud! Made a lot of plays out there. Should have been rated a lot higher, kid is a steal. We are going to have great depth here in the future.

LB

I loved Spruill and it seems like Hodge is going to do a great job stepping in as a starter. The rest of the crew is going to be who they are; great. As far as the freshmen, LT made some big plays, Moskal dropped an interception right in his hands (it was thrown pretty hard), Ziare did a good job filling the gaps. The freshmen class is going to be a special one. They move well and already fill the pads. Great depth here in the future.

K

Both kickers made all their kicks. There was nothing super long with the longest being about 40 yards. There was no heavy rush. Kelly did a great job holding. I would not be shocked to see a great play or two come from him this year. Dixon boomed a few in practice. I am less concerned after the scrimmage then I was going into it.

Wolfgang was out shagging balls. Didn’t see any other of the fam’s including our ACE recruiter Missy.

Sat in front of Naes’s clan. It seems that he was a bit homesick but is quickly getting used to the program. Dad said that it is a tough adjustment for many of the freshmen. He said that it is a shocker to the kids when they are recruited vs. being in the program. It is a hard adjustment but a positive one due to many being the big thing in HS and then being at the bottom of the list when they step in. They are happy with the program and his little sister is just a wonderful, sweet beautiful young lady. She had the most adorable little cheer session when her big brother was in.

There were a few recruits kicking around but couldn’t identify them. One might have been the kid from Postdam who transferred and has to repeat 11th grade.

The one thing I really noticed is that the team one looks in shape and two looks the part of a D1 team. This guy's are big and fast. Huge difference from 10 years ago. We are going to have major depth and really start redshirting freshmen which will really help with the health issues we have had.

I noticed three players banged up on the sidelines. Two were Luke and Crume and couldn't figure out the third. One of the bigger players.

It was a great Fanfest and fun to see how many people were out. It was the best fanfest I have been to in over a decade and included free drinks, snacks, and “Jumpy houses”. I didn’t stick around for the autographs. The GF said I had to get home before I got impounded. Great day, great weather, and is going to be a special year!

Another note is that I saw Beckett walking over from Skytop. There was a pretty big dude watching practice with a red beard. I couldn't make out who he was.

Sorry last update promise. One of the people I was most impressed with during the whole day was former starting LB DietTab. The kid can coach and has a lot of energy. I hope after his GA that we find a way to add him as part of the staff. Add to all that, he is an extremely smart and well spoken young man.

Time to dump the GF.

Soccer field is not field turf. It's real grass.
Didn't get to get on the soccer field, good to know. With the completion of the IPF the Manely area is starting to become a very impressive sports facility. Now, if they can get the men's hockey arena somewhere up there...

My stomach is what I call my GF and she needed to get to dinner and I need to stop listening to her so much; "put the Twinkie down Mem". Home, well home is where there is food. Last night was Chili's.

Caught that awesome sign in Moravia and thought it would be a good conclusion. Poetic incensing.

It is just me, but I felt kind of awkward being a grown man getting other grown men's autographs. If I had kids it would be a completely different story. Now if we could just sit around and chew the hay that would be fine. One thing I would actually think would be pretty cool is to hit up a diner with SS.

Now the real GF, is an awesome lady; I call her the boss. Got laid off two years ago and have had to work odd per diem educational jobs while I'm finishing my Masters work. I scrimped and saved to buy season tickets this year and she wouldn't let me. Instead she is getting them. She spoils me.

Okay, I stand corrected. You should keep her...for now.
