Benny would be our biggest portal pick up

Is someone really trying to spin 39.6% from 3 being “terrible”? 40% from 3, even if you’re not taking a lot of 3s is an elite number. That would rank him in the top 50 in the country in 3 point percentage if he had taken 2 more 3s. He shot 1.6 3s per game and made them at a 40% clip, that’s very good, especially for someone who was 1-11 on 3s his freshman year.
It’s ridiculous.

I had a LOT of issues with Benny’s game this season but his 39.6% 3 point percentage (on an obviously limited number of attempts) is NOT one of them

Under 40% for a forward (including non-high 3 point volume shooters) is not “terrible”. A 39.6
3-point percentage for Benny is, at a minimum, encouraging. To suggest anything else (including it being ‘terrible’) is silly.

There’s a way to temper enthusiasm without going equally too far in the other direction.

I think he may have been looking at it as 39.6% overall shooting percentage and not just from 3.

Under 40% is terrible for a forward who is not a Julius Randle spot-up type.

He has energy he is figuring out where to deploy it. He’s a throwback developmental player that somehow had a high rating, but that shooting percentage shows he’s 1) not a great decisionmaker, nor 2) a good shooter.

Be a Damone Brown and that would be great.

So I think you are confused. He shot 44.7 pct overall and 39.6 pct from 3.

Bees beat me to it...

Definitely should temper expectations about him shooting. CJ fair shot 47% on nearly the same amount of 3s/game his Junior year and I don't think anyone would've called him a 3pt shooter. Benny's game is improving but he will not be a 3pt specialist anytime soon

My fault.

I thought the 39.6% was over FG from the post. That percentage IS pretty damn good and while 44.7% overall ain’t great, I mistook the data point.

Benny's outside shot has consistent form and arc. While maybe a specialist is a bit aggressive , a shooter and a deep threat is fair. A bunch of guys who can shoot it at 35 pct works just fine too and he very much has that ability. His inconsistency has been that weird pushed high release jump shot closer to the hoop. He needs to attack the rim or use a floater for those or simply stop shooting that one. His mid range is pretty good too as long as he isn't trying to do it so much off iso. Off a screen or catch and shoot its also a weapon.

even though a large section of the posters on this board seemed to take it as a foregone conclusion for some reason that he wouldn't be back.
He did leave the team in the middle of the season before we knew that JAB was stepping down and Red was taking over.

If he's back, great. Especially if it's the Benny who played down the stretch even though the team stunk. His biggest issue is his head. Red might be able to chip the diamond out.

After his poor shooting technique as a freshman and early sophomore, his shot was much better especially from 3 at the end of this year. Project that trend forward with additional self-push to improve on O and aggressiveness on D, and Benny could have a breakout junior year. Do it Benny at Cuse!
Cheering for Benny, but didn't we say the same thing about his SO year after he had the great game at Duke late in his FR season?

With Autry taking over, and Benny playing great to end the year, I would be shocked if Benny leaves...even though a large section of the posters on this board seemed to take it as a foregone onclusion for some reason that he wouldn't be back.

i hope he stays - he's ready to break out.

For some reason? Being real, in todays world it is almost a surprise when any player returns to their school. Furthermore, Benny has woefully underperformed since being here, has been heavily criticized by the fans and (now ousted) HC, and actually left the team for a short period this year! To say he’s a high risk to to not return is a pretty fair assessment I think.

As a team, we shot well from 3 but we didn’t shoot high volume. With higher volume, you expect % to go down.

I'll take 39% from anybody at any position.

Yeah. I understand the need for positivity on the board but we also need some objectivity.

It’s not crazy by any means to think Benny is as far a possible from a sure thing. Personally I think playing man and being able to run up and down more will help him a lot. But I can also see him slink into the background again. Or, as you stated, leave the program

To put some numbers to it, we were dead last in the ACC in conference play in three pointers attempted, with only 16.9 attempts per game. Second to last was at 18.1, with Wake Forest leading the way with 27.4 shots per game. Only four ACC teams were under 20 attempts per game in conference play.

We were 5th in percentage, probably because Girard is pretty good and the other guys only shot when they were wide open. Taylor, Bell and Williams all shot either respectable or very good percentages from three. Miami led the league with 38.5%, with Wake second at 36.9%.

An offense where we again attempt 17 threes a game, but Mintz and Starling combine to shoot 12 layups and 10 free throws a game would be a nice change of pace.

The two dribble penetrators driving to the basket to look for their own shot, or for kickouts and drive and dish opportunities should make for an effective half court offense.

While the same thought haunts me, I am all in for Benny turning it around with Red as the HC. Especially if we play some different defenses. It sounds like a broken record but he has all the tools to explode. Hopefully, Red is the key to unlock them!

fair enough...I guess Benny did almost leave the team this season...but it was obviously due to clashes with JB and his system and just not fitting.

My issue is that mid-season, there were a ton of posters on this board assuming Benny was gone without any indication from the player himself that he was leaving...

All things considered, in that he played maybe his best Cuse Game in the last game of the season...it points to his return...along with Autry taking over...

If JB was back, I would guess he would be gone though...
