Bill Connelly on SU

There are at least 5 names missing, and a few that should be removed. The missing names are Shy, Steven, Anthony, Tyler, Sam. Colton is no longer there. I'm pretty sure that there are two DTs that are no longer on the team, as well.

ETA: Brandon's name should be on the roster; isn't

I'm just a moron; but I was able to sniff those errors out in under 5 minutes. If this guy is going to pass himself off as an expert, then maybe he should be a bit more diligent in his research. As it stands, in my opinion, it's just another hack piece (Syracuse sucks, yadda, yadda, yadda).

Worth what I paid; nothing.
ok

It really is a reasoned, in depth read. It's just unfortunate that they conspicuously left a certain freshman linebacker off the list of LBs on the roster this year.

As if Shy needed a bigger chip on his shoulder to start knocking heads this year.

Also omitted Steven Clark in the DL list. Those two will be physically ready to compete from day 1 on campus.

Still lists Marcus Coleman who, unfortunately, had to hang up his cleats for good. Who is the 2nd?

FWIW, most people here get the roster 100% right...and still whiff on most of their predictions.

So it probably doesn't matter.

Did any of you "experts" consider that he took his roster data from here: http://cuse.com/roster.aspx?path=football

Tell me when you find all the 2015 incoming players on the official school roster while you dismiss all the statistics and data presented by an unbiased person who does 128 previews.
Then why are the rest of the freshmen on the roster breakdown he provides, when they aren't on the Cuse.com roster?

I don't particularly care, mistakes happen. I certainly wasn't dismissing his stats, either. I said it was a well reasoned article.

You'd have to ask him where he sourced his information from, but my point is aimed at those who are saying "he's missing this kid, so it's not worth the read". Maybe we should just start two football boards here- one where you can only say positive things, and one where debate and discussion is allowed.

Calling a writer's efforts into question is part of debate and discussion.

It's the equivalent of a guy who flubs basic math, yet wants you to think of himself as a radar expert.

Trust his opinion if you want. As for me, if he can't even get close to a correct roster, then everything else is suspect.

Was ohio state good last year?

i have no idea because I don't know every person on their roster.

since so much of the piece is about how there is simply so much turnover on what was a good defense, is it necessary to know every guy who hasn't played much?

No.

If some schmoe is gonna pass himself off as an expert, I expect him to get the easy !@#$ right. Can't get the easy @#$% right? Too bad, not an "expert".

Throwing away really good, statistically sounds, high-level analysis because the roster isn't 100% accurate (which is far from the point of the article) is really silly, but I know we need to complain about everything, so carry on.

How do you know it's statistically sound? Are you privy to all the data he used? Whose to say the data he collected is correct? We KNOW the roster isn't...

He's the lead statistic-based football writer for a huge sports network, he's incredibly well-thought of in the industry, he's a writer for Football Outsiders, probably the best CFB-based stats site out there. I'm sorry that the roster left a few guys off, but when he's writing thousands of words every day and going that far in depth on every single FBS school, those things might happen once in a while. Those errors hardly invalidate everything else.

he's good enough to speak at MIT's sloan sport conference but he might not be good at math

Nah, he didn't mention a few kids who haven't even stepped foot on campus, he's the quackiest quack who ever quacked.

Statistics aren't opinions.

C'mon. I didn't see any stats for the upcoming season and yet the whole piece was about rendering an opinion.

(Again - I thought it was fair. Just disagree with some of his conclusions)

The piece was about analyzing data to try to determine future performance. The guy hedged constantly, unlike many here he didn't claim to be omniscient and know with certainty what the future holds.
