Bills stinking up the place so far.

Not sure if your looking for me to give my thoughts on the Bills or the Manuel vs Nassib argument but I will try to do both. First off in regards to Manuel vs Nassib its nearly impossible to make any sort of real comparison because Manuel has played mostly vs 1st team defenses and Nassib against 2's an 3's. I like Ryan, was a good player here and helped put Syracuse on the map. He also seems to be playing well and even though Kaiser probably won't be thrilled he seems a lock to be the Giants #2. That being said without seeing Ryan facing #1 defenses and going against the like of Bill Bellichek, Rex Ryan etc its hard for me to say who is the better QB especially when Nassib has taken exactly zero snaps in an actual game. Also I dont think people understand how different it is playing against a second and third team in the preseason. Manuel in the third quarter against a good chunk of second team guys (some starters were in but not many) went 11-11 with a TD and two scoring drives for the Bills in the second half Saturday. As for the Bills themselves I felt like I was re-living the last decade of ineptitude in one game. I think everyone knew before last years draft that Manuel had a lot of question marks about his ability to be a franchise guy. Unfortunately Buffalo picked the one year to finally draft a a QB in the first round where there wasn't a consensus top guy or even a few definite round 1 types. I think they felt Manuel was the best of what was available and they were at a point where they had to draft a QB period. To me Manuel's issues are his lack of accuracy ( a huge killer), his ability to stay healthy, and his ability to actually read through to his 3rd and 4th progressions. Combine that with Hackett's playcalling that seems to jump all over the place and about 20 first half penalties (three of which were bull sh$t and wiped out two huge runs by CJ on Saturday) and you get the performance you saw on Saturday. My biggest issue with the Bills and the front office was that they didnt bring a veteran or even a high upside young guy to compete for the second spot. Dennis dixon is awful, Lewis is only slightly better, and Jeff Tuel scares absolutley no one. It does appear that Marrone and Waley are at least acknowledging theres nothing behind Manuel, so I am hopeful some type of move can be made. I know Orton is out there, he should be signed immediately. Ditto for another veteran, hell at this point I would bring in Tebow we have nothing to lose. The good news for Bills fans is that the Defense looks really good (though that secondary still leaves a lot to be desired), theres plenty of depth at WR and the O line, the LB's seem to be doing OK despite losing Alonso and the FG kicker is very good. The key for Buffalo is the same as it always is, can the offense put up points consistently and can there team as a whole stop imploding late and finding new and excrutiating ways to lose.

Thanks. Was looking for your thoughts on the bills.

As to Manuel vs Nassib, people keep saying one is playing vs the 1's the other the 2's. Works both ways as Manuel has played with the 1's and Nassib the 2's. Kind if off sets things.

Thats a good point about playing with the 2's as well, I certainly think that Nassib has played very well this pre-season.

One other issue that hurts Buffalo is that there schedule is again a beast. Obviously 2 games against the Pats and 2 times against a Rex Ryan D plus Chicago, San Diego, Kansas City, Denver, Green Bay, etc.

I think everyone is overreacting to the game on Saturday. I saw a team that has talent but can't get out of it's own way. I think Bills fans need to realize that everyone in the starting oline had not played that position this year other than Wood... the oline was just not sharp and that led to the vast majority of the problems in the game. I also hate to blame the refs but they made some pretty questionable calls that wiped out some big gains by the Bills.

My concerns are as follow:
- Marrone is just not equipped to handle the stress of being a head coach in the long run. I fear for the man's health. I think he is way too controlling and inflexible. He needs to loosen up like he did his last year at Syracuse.
- Hackett doesn't have a good feel for calling an NFL game. Not sure if he's being limited by EJ or not but he is not utilizing his talent. It's pretty telling that the year before last with Chan the Man the Bills had the best screen game in the NFL. Last year with largely the same personnell the Bills never threw screens... in the pre-season we look terrible at throwing the screen pass. This seems like a repeat of Hackett's Syracuse career where we were asking where are all the screens were to stop blitzes. Unlike at Syracuse Hackett won't get a third year if the offense stinks again.
- EJ does not have IT... he is a very robotic QB with no feel for the game. You combine Fitzpatrick's feel for the game with EJ's athletic ability and you have a HOF'er. EJ's ceiling is Jason Cambell part 2. It's sad because this team is a QB away from being really good.
- The LBs can't cover RB's out of the backfield. I forsee the team giving up a lot of 3rd and longs to the RB out of the backfield
- The secondary scares the crap out of me. Gilmore just does not look like a shutdown corner and I think McLovin is still not recovered from his hip surgery. He is limping around out there. I also think that neither Searcy nor Duke Williams is going to be able to adequately replace Byrd. They each make multiple mistakes a game which lead to really big plays.

My prediction the team is 7-9 this year and the new owner cleans house in the offseason

are you just talking about them being better options as backups or as starters?

the fact that i have to ask makes me sick about next years first round pick that they don't have
Who are the good QB's this year in college after Winston? I want nothing to do with Winston on the Bills. After Winston I'm not sure there is surefire a starting QB in next year's draft.

Mariota and Hundley will be top first round QBs next year.

there are no sure fire starting QBs

that's why you have to draft them more often

the bills go so many years without drafting anyone, when they finally do, they tie their hands and waste 3 picks on a guy who's not a surefire

if you don't have a qb, keep drafting them until you do. worry about WR and kick returners and safeties and all the other stupid junk they've drafted high forever

Yeah but they can still do that with 2nd and 3rd round picks... can't draft a 1st round qb every year.

They forced the EJ pick also. The QB of the Bills right now should be Russle Wilson as a 3rd round pick but Nix in all his brilliance traded up to draft... TJ Graham. Everytime I think about that I want to kick a cat and steal candy from a baby.

No guarantee Wilson is as good for the Bills as he is for the Seahawks.

that's fine with me. i want them to draft qbs every round.

they've drafted 4 qbs since 1995. the 2 first rounders they took were reaches.

Levi Brown rd 7 2010
Edwards rd 3 2007
losman rd 1 2004

They've had 157 picks in that time.

They haven't had a long term qb that whole time

They've drafted 4 WR in rds 1 2 and 3 since 2012

ONE OF THEM WAS TJ GRAHAM WHO IS THE WORST (wait you already said that)

AYE YI YI

They've drafted 4 qb since kelly and 19 WR.

Wow Milly, when you break it down like that, I mean, that is pretty damning.

I'd love some team with a new GM and coach to just say it and only draft QBs with an entire season's draft and tell their fans "listen, one of these guys is going to turn out to be a good."

Completely different problem set Seattle vs Buffalo. Can't project that.

Re: Hackett - tough to blame vanilla preseason after what we all saw last year. And I'm normally the last guy to complain about playcalling (because it's the qb, stupid). But man, there were about 900 sequences last year that went something like:
1st&10 - Jackson for 6 yards.
2nd&4 - Spiller for 5 yards.
1st&10 - Jackson/Spiller for -2 yards.

Dude, this aint West Virginia. You've got to mix in a play action on 1st down once in a while. Particularly when you have a burner like Goodwin (who burned 3 elite defenses for long td's). And particularly in a league where the refs apparently get a bonus for every ticky tack PI flag they throw. There is zero reason not to take 1-2 deep shots per quarter.

Not to mention, there is evidently no option in the read option, as Manuel never keeps it. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that this was due to injury and injury concerns. But if that's the case, maybe it calls for a different style?

like everything else in football, they substitute questions they can answer

who gives us the best chance to win? durrrr I dunno bossthss

substitution time!

who can i draft that will end up playing? ooo oooo i know a db, a wide receiver!! even if they suck, they end up seeing the field. doesn't matter if some UFA scrub would be just as good

wilson had the best college season ever and he's been great in the NFL

maybe we should just go ahead and realize he's great and that TOB is a stupid turd

Any chance you missed the last 14 years?

Actually I have lived in Kansas City since 1998 which means I get the Chiefs every freaking week instead of the Bills. Maybe you guys can chip in on my DirecTV and League Pass subscription and see if that makes any difference! :)

They should have signed Matt Hasselbeck when the Titans released him back in 2013. Now he has a 2 year deal with the Colts. He'd be a perfect vet to ease in a decent QB.

I'd like to see the Bills get him.

Agree with this... I don't see what about Wilson wouldn't translate to the Bills. I so badly wanted them to pick him that year as I thought he was the best qb I had seen in college in that draft. I will now go stick my head in a food processor thinking about TJ Graham instead. Now here's a debate guaranteed to make you want to jump out a window. Who was a worse pick... that Hardy kid from Indiana in the 2nd round or Graham in the 3rd. While I think Graham is a better player he is a worse pick given that he would have been easily available 3 rounds later.

This is exactly why I am glad the Bills won't be drafting a 1st round QB next year. Hundley looks like the next EJ and Mariota has finished how many seasons without being injured?

If he stinks , do it again next year. Qb is everything, football guys wish it weren't so.

They're gonna sign Jordan Palmer according to a couple of reports.

Well great! All our quarterback problems are solved...
the guy was 15th in the country in passer rating his senior year. threw for 11000 yards in his college career

manuel was 14th, nassib was 35th

threw a lot of interceptions and a lot of yards.

when manuel goes down, i'd rather see what he's got rather than jeff tuel
