BJ Johnson on way to Midnight Madness

Can he play SG? Him or Gbinije are going to have to moving guard especially if we don't bring in Rysheed Jordan.
gbinje can no question.

and his shot looked quality, it just didnt fall at MM.

Looks like a smaller CJ Fair with a better jumper. Similar athlete with nice springs, but not overly quick. He sure will have to fill out and speed up his release point at the college level, but he sure seems like a prime RS candidate.

I don't see him as a SG imho. Strictly a wing and somebody that I think will have a similar career like Southerland at SU.

I wonder how old that video was. It has him only listed as 6'4 and everywhere else I've looked has him listed as either 6'6 or 6'7

too lazy to check...how do the services have him rated?

IIRC, we were told that Brandon Austin would commit to SU if given an offer. It appears that BJ Johnson was more coveted by the SU staff than Austin. Austin looks like a great player with elite athleticism and great skill. The fact that SU took Johnson instead says alot about this young man.

Looks like a good prospect. Boeheim and company know what they want in their recruits. He can really shoot it. He gives them range and good hops. If we have the luxury of red shirting him, he could be a nice contributor down the road. It's fun to get the occasional 5 star recruits, but the 4 year recruits are the backbone of the program.

One other thought on Johnson. With his body type and age, I would be surprised if he doesn't grow a couple more inches. That would raise his ceiling as a player...

I think it is almost a given, that he grows once he gets to SU. Something in the water.

Austin has an impressive offer list. Hope we're right and they're all wrong.

Me too. Maybe they know that they will be getting a commit from Roberson/Vonleh/Lawrence/Wiggins, and they wanted more of a developmental player and Johnson knows that he will need a couple of years to contribute and just fits that role better.

I agree... he is still 16 and most of the top ranked players are 2 years older than him

Johnson is a redshirt candidate. He's a wing with range. Decent athlete. Not overly strong handle. Needs to fill out.
According to Philly Recruiting BJ is like 6'7" and 170 to 180. Yeah I see a year at RS just to fill out and add weight and muscle.

He measured in officially at 6'8 in a camp over the summer.
Francis...what happened with Austin...by the way, Johnson at 16 yr old...and rising 3 star...is a very good get if he commits...does he redshirt?

Mike G already fits the role that Austin would play and Johnson offers upside down the road and doesn't affect the recruitments of Roberson/Vonleh. The redshirt thing is interesting, because I think Obokoh could use a redshirt year as well to fill out. I wonder if the staff would do Johnson like Southerland, and have him prep for a year before coming in because I've never seen 2 players redshirt for non injuries. If DC2 leaves after next season then Obokoh will be needed right away and then redshirting Johnson would be no biggie, but we'll see what happens.

Lanky lefty = playing for Cuse is his destiny.

I absolutely love lefties with little baby hooks and mid range floaters. The fact this kid has range to 20 and great ball & body control attacking the rim is a huge red flag that we may have found a gem of a sleeper recruit, perfect for our playstyle @ 6'7"+.

...and he isn't a blue chip coming in with an attitude expecting to start immediately and leave after a few years spent destroying the chemistry lab.

...and if 'dream school' rumors are true and he really wants to be here - that means everything in my book.

TBH I'm kind of psyched about this kid and think I might be more excited about landing him than Vonleh/Lawrence (but not Roberson). Vonleh will play 2 yrs max, too much talent with too much height... and too much hype, meaning he is already planning on leaving before he steps foot on campus. Lawrence, as I've said, looks like all hype to me, hype and baggage.

If he gets an offer and accepts, and we land Jordan... I have no problem calling this class a HUGE success... while leaving the door wide open for the top of the top 2014 big men to see an opportunity for tons of PT (should Rak/DC2 meet potential).
