Week 5: Baylor vs. Stanford
There were two huge upsets impacting the blow-out bowl. No the underdog didn’t win the game. But LSU only beat Eastern Michigan 44-22. And Texas Christian, after opening up a 30-0 lead on Texas after only one quarter, relented and won by only 50-7. LSU was the only ranked team to play a “directional” opponent last week, so our blow-out bowl contestants are defending champ Baylor, who walloped Texas Tech and Stanford who declawed the Wildcats of Arizona. Both, of course are conference opponents, not imported tomato cans. The idea of this is to parody scheduled mismatches. But we can’t be picky: a blow-out is a blow-out.
FIRST QUARTER
13:55 The Bears waste no time getting on the board: Shock Linwood 79 yard run
Bears 7 Cardinal 0
11:00 It doesn’t stop there: KD Cannon 28 Yd pass from Seth Russell
Bears 14 Cardinal 0
10:50 Never bring a field goal to a touchdown fight: Conrad Ukropina 38 yd FG GOOD

1:23 It’s getting out of hand: Seth Russell 1 Yd Run

0:48 But the ol’ bird’s wings begin to flutter: Christian McCaffrey run for 4 yds for a TD,
But they miss the extra point.
Bears 28 Cardinal 13
SECOND QUARTER
11:15 Five touchdowns in six possession: Shock Linwood 8 Yd Run
Bears 35 Cardinal 13
8:22 And six in seven: Corey Coleman 16 Yd pass from Seth Russell

Bears 63 Cardinal 48
4:03 Too little, too late: Keller Chryst pass complete to Rollins Stallworth for 6 yds for a TD,
Bears 63 Cardinal 55
Comments: Baylor, the country’s highest scoring team (64 points a game) and yards gained (745) was just too much to keep up with. In this game, they scored only 63 points and gained only 680 yards, 368 on the ground and 312 through the air. Seth Russell was 15 for 23 for 286 yards (19 yards per completion) and 4TDs. “Shock” Linwood rushed for 221 yards and 2 TDs on 20 carries. Corey Coleman caught 7 passes for 110 yards and 3 scores. Jay lee didn’t score but caught 3 passes for 120 yards, 40 yards a pop! One went 87 yards but he didn’t’ quite get to the end zone. In the end that didn’t matter.
Stanford gained 570 yards, 314 on the ground and 256 through the air. Kevin Hogan was a surgical 17 for 19 for 217 yards and 2 scores. Christian McCaffrey rushed for 156 yards on 17 carries and 1 score. Barry Jr. had 76 yards on 4 carries and that one score. Michael Rector had 4 catches for 72 yards and a score. Very impressive but if they were actually playing Baylor, it wouldn’t have been enough.
We missed a great game!
