I totally get the negative sentiment but I’ll be the (small) contrarian - high school recruiting just doesn’t matter as much and I’m not sweating it. If they’re covered on hs trails and adjusting general responsibility that enables this, that’s not the end of the world for me. I’m happy for anything that brings any positives to any aspect of the syracuse brand.

You have to wonder if Griffin is getting compensated for this mop up duty or if it is truly volunteering his time. Either way it's not like he has any idea what he's doing anyways lol. Thankfully Melo will undoubtedly be able to exert some sort of influence on the direction of the MBBALL team this year, help us out of the doldrums

Have the rules changed? There used to be a limit as to how many coaches could be on the road at a time. It was 3 years ago. What is it now? 3? 4? Unlimited? If there is a limit maybe Kline is replacing Griff which I would be OK with.

Effective immediately, all six countable coaches in Division I men's basketball will be permitted to recruit off campus. Only four of the six coaches may recruit off campus at any one time. The NABC-supported rule change was approved this week by the NCAA DI Council.

Even if so, they are already handling the reporting on this news pretty badly. No one knows what to think about this news because we’re all under the impression that unless you’re being asked to coach on a summer national team, your duty is to Syracuse University Basketball first and foremost as a coach. This is unprecedented, so yeah maybe a tweet breaking the news and then we’ll explain the context later after the news breaks wasn’t the right approach here.

I just can't understand how this would be allowed. First, why he would agree to do it. Second, why Red and the school would say sure, go ahead.

The timing of him coaching TBT couldn't be worse. Opening round is July 19-23. The final evaluation period for HS players is the same time frame. One could argue all coaches either don't need or can't be out on the road at the same time. But July 20th is also the start period that coaches can be involved with practices with current players on campus. I would think being out on the road recruiting or being involved in the initial practice days (you know the thing he is being paid to do) should take priority over coaching in the TBT.

I don’t see this has a huge problem for a few reasons.

For one recruiting hs kids is less important than it’s ever been…not that it’s irrelevant but I don’t see how missing two weeks of aau evaluations is going to make or break anything for us on the recruiting front…Griff is certainly not our top evaluator to begin with.

Kline, Autry and Dan E and possibly even Straughn are in front of Griff as far as evaluating talent goes so it doesn’t seem like a huge loss.

And on the flip side I could see how this could be beneficial for Griff, to sharpen his coaching chops with legitimate professionals talent and be forced to sink or swim.

At the very least he becomes more comfortable with Xs and Os and game planing. I think Griff could use this to be honest for fine tuning and progressing as a coach.

I get the flip side of the perception of where the program is at right now, but idk seems like potentially an overreaction.

Right now it’s the delivery. Why do we need to be speculating on this. They could’ve went on the radio right away and broke the news and explain the reasons. Would there still be people that will complain? Sure. A lot of it right now is the delivery and uncertainty of what this means or if it means anything.

The program is under a microscope with everything it does I understand that and this is justified based upon recent results…

But all this means is that Griff will be away from evaluations for 2 weeks, which doesn’t seem like a problem because as bees pointed out only 4 assistants are allowed on the road and rn Kline is our top evaluator.

So there’s an odd man out and it doesn’t seem like a waste of time for a guy like Griff who still has something to prove as a coach.
